Good Steam games with bad sales figures (SteamSpy)

What kind of game is Age of Decadence? I've heard it mentioned before as a game where you can win through speech checks alone and I thought that sounded really cool. What would you compare it to?

It's a roleplaying game (with actual roleplaying). I'm drawing a blank on other titles to compare it though, it can play out like a turn based combat heavy game or a CYAO, it depends on your build.

Excellent port, awesome developer, really fun game, bafflingly low sales.

I'll sub to this thread. With the amount of games on Steam going up and up at a faster rate, discoverability becomes a problem, even with the many features added to improve it. Valve really needs to get going with that plan of allowing multiple storefronts using Steam as a backend.

The problem for Trails in the Sky/SC is that they're priced at $20/$30. That's way too high for a game that's a decade old. I have them on my wishlist but I'm not buying at those prices.

That, and I don't doubt many people bought Nekopara Vol 2 as a "investment" :P. The damn game sells several thousands of steam trading cards a day, all the while keeping up the the prices. I've already got the money I spent on it back and then some!
It took me a while to figure this one out. So this is the reason why a sack of gems has gone up in value by 13% in the last week. For those of you who don't get it
the individual card prices are almost as much as it costs to make a booster pack out of gems and a booster pack comes with 3 cards. Even after cuts that is some profit. Of course making a booster pack out of gems requires you to own the game and can be only be done once per day.

I figured the Bit.Trip games might make the list, but I was pleasantly surprised by the sales for most of the games in the series.

A G1 Transformers game from Platinum?! WTH... I've never even heard of this. :( I blame lack of promotion more than anything, but I'm going to be looking into this further. Thanks!

SC is the only one with a price issue, FC has been $10 several times now. Maybe they will go lower eventually, the older Ys games eventually hit $5 or so.

Feel bad about TitS SC selling bad. I still have both games on my wish list because there are at least 10 other games I'm planning to play before those.

Trails in the Sky SC has only sold 15k on Steam.

Other examples?

I guess the issue is that they priced the game too high. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky was $20, and launched at $17, a much easier price to justify picking it up. $30 seems to be off putting, plus the game launched at an odd time with little fanfare and no release discount like the first game.

Doesn't help that the first game is really long and a lot of people likely didn't finish it. There is also the likelyhood that a lot of people bought the first for the hype and just didn't enjoy the game.

I know it's been part of an ongoing thing about NISA's incompetencies failing to advertise it properly or ever get it in a sale, but it's still a pretty low number for what is a great game.

The PC version is kinda... problematic though, so even with advertising they might have been in a similar situation. Putting the game on sale would have helped though, that's for sure.

I really don't think price was ever an issue for SC at all, except for people that will buy the game straight to their backlog. And those sales can be gotten at any time later in the life of the game.

For people who enjoyed FC enough to play it to the end, $30 for SC is nothing.

The games are great, if not enough people can get over the fact that they're old, fuck the world, but it is what it is. Don't blame it on XSEED. You can't localize these games and then sell them for $15 a piece

I don't really think price is an issue regarding the Trails games. FC barely outsold the 2nd Neptunia game and it released 6 months later at an higher priced while being a sequel.

Age of Decadence

Both games will likely go down in history as cult classics. They didn't sell nearly enough considering their quality.

I still need to try Underrail, but Age of Decadence is one of the best RPGs I've played in years. The writing is incredible. Characters regularly lie, cheat, steal, and the story can wildly vary depending on how much you KNOW is true, versus what you experienced. Nobody's an idiot, and most people are only out to use you, but nobody's "evil". Everyone has reasons for doing what they do, and it all meshes together. Play it as a regular character going along with things and you'll get a lot of "fake" lore, with the real events only pieced together gradually if you look for them. You really have to pay attention and do a lot of reading between the lines. You'll also have to do multiple playthroughs for everything, as each class only gets to see about 60% of the total story, and that's if you know what you're doing.

Or find one of the "special" characters who never lie. Get them talking and they'll lay on the exposition.

I couldn't get enough of that bleak world, and I'm really glad that there's going to be another game set in it. Sold about ~35k so far, and they've been good about supporting it. First game in forever I not only bought a few minutes after learning about it, but also loved it right away. 49 hours later and I still haven't even met everybody. Combat's pretty tough, makes playing as a thief or (especially) an assassin frustrating if you absolutely must fight (and you rarely do, there are so many stat checks and tools that I'd say genuine use-your-sword fighting should be a last resort). Only the mercenary is really specced to turn into a decent fighter who can take on multiple enemies. Otherwise, standard soldiers will act like real soldiers and kill you pretty fast. The game helpfully reminds you on several occasions of how screwed you are.

I'll add:

Missed the Kickstarter and had no idea this existed until it released. A seriously fun virtual novel, under 30k sales total. Between these two games I had more fun at the end of 2015 than I've probably had in the last ~3 years.

This is a crime against humanity. This game is freaking amazing.

Yup, I hope it did better on consoles. Like, I don't imagine it had a big budget, but these sales seem especially confounding. Is this blowback from people not liking the previous TF game? people avoiding it due to price? people not liking the G1 style, or thinking the game looks cheap? it blows my mind.

Not only is the PC version problematic, the game sort of sucks. I didn't enjoy it.

Criminally under appreciated game, which in my opinion is up there with Shovel Knight regarding the quality and respect to the NES era. If you ever wanted a new classic Castlevania, look no further.

Also it's Berserk as fuck. Especially the last stage.

SUCH a good game. I bought it on GOG, and it still took me a while to play it... but when I did, oh man.

I think people hear that the campaign is 5ish hours long and wig out, discounting the 20 - 30 hours the challenge mode takes to clear which comprises the meat of the game.

The numbers for Transformers: Devastation are absolutely shocking.

I could have sworn it was closer to 100k at least. Wow...

My pick is Elminage Gothic.

This game is frequently on sale for $3, which is a steal for such a massive D-RPG with great art and dungeon-design.

This is sad. Eschatos is a really good game! Let's look at some other Steam STGs:

These two have figures that... might be okay, honestly. I'm not sure what Taito and MOSS expected. Taito's probably fine given the game's price. Regardless, they're both great games and are must-owns for fans of the genre.

This, however, is a tragedy:

Strania rules. Y'all should buy it. Two dense and unique STG campaigns with crazy-good presentation and some serious challenge.

While it's easy to get bummed about this (being into them myself), you just have to remember the hard reality that shmups only appeal to a very small, specific group of people. They aren't usually advertised that much either, since only the specific group who cares about them pays attention. Hopefully the devs who make them realize this and see it as being enough to keep making/porting them. Usually, only the more popular outliers ever make it past 10k sales, and 100k+ for a shmup nowadays is a seemingly impossible occurrence.

If that piques your interest at all, definitely look into it. It was probably developed on a fraction of the budget of a typical Platnum AAA title, but what they did witht hat budget was pretty awesome. Great game.

I think people hear that the campaign is 5ish hours long and wig out, discounting the 20 - 30 hours the challenge mode takes to clear which comprises the meat of the game.

Yeah, I could see it being a price vs content thing. Perhaps it would have taken off if it was only $30. Either way, great game. I should actually get back and play more.

This is true.
I have finished FC but haven't bought SC yet because it released at an unfortunate timeframe for me personally and various other games are keeping me occupied for now.

I plan on buying it in summer once I should have enough time for it. 20% off during summer sale would be nice but it wouldn't matter even if it weren't discounted at all, I'd still get it.

Holy shit Odallus: The Dark Call looks amazing! Straight to my Steam's wishlist. Is there a planned release for any console yet?

Don't think it'd work very well, since it's real time.

The iPad port of LoG1 is amazing so at the very least it'd work well on Vita.

I have a ton of Steam shmups I've seen people talk about and I've literally never even heard of Strania before.

Guess it's not surprising considering the ridiculously low sales.

I must've missed the sales, I've had them both on my wishlist for a while now.

It's been 10% off during Black Friday and Winter sales.

Is there that much nostalgia for Wizardry-likes on PC though? The old-school CRPG crowd tends to lean heavily post-Fallout 1 class.

it was still like $32 during the last sale, that's a lot of money for a PC game

It's a bit like Fallout (real Fallout). Single character, heavy on the C&C.

And definitely Elliot Quest. Along with Shovel Knight and Volgarr the Viking, one of the sidescrollers which can stand proudly along the classics.

Because of this I've a) Discovered that I own Oniken already, and b) it's a really good game. Once I've completed Oniken I'll look in to Odallus.

I blame trash games coming in massive quantities as one of the reasons of the sales decline on steam. I used to check new releases everyday, and with the amount of trash coming out, I don't bother anymore.

Danganronpa is a 30 hour visual novel. Its better on a handheld (imo). Plus Nekopara 2 as far as I know is a PC only release. There's probably not a lot of repeat buyers as its probably a once play thru type game. D1 and D2 have also sold 200k copies in the west.

But with the millions steam users, Danganronpa was surely supposed to amazing numbers!

Still hasn't had a decent sale, its cheaper at retail on console then STEAM

Plus Danganronpa is in a bad position, most of the hardcore VN fans most likely have pirated the PSP version and fanpatched it, rather then buying it on vita or here on STEAM from what I have seen on old threads on here and reddit :(

Lowest ranked Arcsys game. Still the best and most balanced 2.5d fighter, second only to SFV

ArcSystem Works is terrible at promoting their games, they released Guilty Gear Xrd and anybody knew it.

That was just a game nobody wanted, even on console in its release heyday.

10% off is really not the kind of sale that a $20 decade-old title needs.

Well, for starters, you're talking about the wrong game; excellent start lol
The base price for SC is already cheap, it's not going to cater to someone who wants it for pennies in bundles.
