Google announces Nexus Player console (Quad Atom/PowerVR6, 1GB RAM, controller), $99

Bought for streaming everything. My wife and I just moved in together, and we're going cable/dish-free, so this will be perfect for our living room TV.

Cool you don't need to buy the controller, I'll be doing some cross border shopping next month

Yeah, Xbox and PS controllers work by plugging it in. Retroarch I think supports Bluetooth connection, so that covers the PS controller.
I think I may just use the old SixAxis controller I have for the console.

So a fire TV that isn't tied to Amazon? Sounds and looks good, nice to see Google presenting their take on Apple TV and Co.

XBMC on Android is robust as fuck, this will be a very nice media player.

Given the controller is sold separately, it's probably first a set-top box and then a device with gaming featuers as well. IIRC, Fire TV was the same.

By the way, do we have any idea about Fire TV sales? I don't think I've heard anything on the matter

Specs wise (though we'll need a few more details to confirm) this feels quite a bit more aggressive than the Fire TV in certain ways as well.

I don't get the point of this thing, is for who? people that just casually wants to play candy Crush?

I don't get it.

Amazon does not share sales figures for their own products to my knowledge.

And yes the page makes it clear it's also targeted as a set top box.

Hmm, another cheap Apple TV/Roku clone. As much as Google Play is getting more game content, still lacks some big Developers from the IOS store. Until all Iphone games are on it, No Buy. Also watch Amazon, up-end this this Holiday or early 2015 with thr amazon fire 2.0

Yes, what was Google thinking by marketing this as a gaming device to gamers for games? It's quite possibly the worst decision I've ever heard of.

That's not what they're doing.

Apparently it's exceeding Amazon's expectations. So probably not bad. There's not really anyone doing independent tracking of STBs and Amazon will never give numbers so it's hard to truly tell though.

There's basically zero chance of Amazon offering something superior to Google in this space, frankly. Amazon can only win by being first (this does not appear to have gone well with the Fire TV) or by being cheaper (their focus on the tablets and, reluctantly, the phone).

The Fire line seems to be doing well enough to not be discontinued, but from the constant price drops and apparently reduced ambitions I don't think it's going that well for them.

Really? Where did they say that? They've had multiple deals on it and their phone crashed pretty hard. I'd be surprised if the streaming box were that different. Especially for games, it does seem to be an acceptable streaming box however, and I'm sure that was the primary intent (of both devices really)

It's Google Play, does it need exclusives if you're already on the eco system?

For it to even have a chance to catch on as a gaming device, yeah IMO.

I can't imagine many gamers willing to spend $100 plus the cost of the controller in order to play Android games on the big screen unless there is a killer app only available on this device.

Well it's coming out later as well, but the Fire TV 2GB Ram and Snapdragon CPU combination were and are still more than enough for tasks to handle. The Snapdragon/Adreno combination is used by many other manufacturers so games are optimized quite well for it.

It's not targeting the same market, not as a primary focus anyway. It will target people that already play Google Play games ("gamer" or no) who are interested in a set top box, in addition to people who just plain want a set top box and don't give a shit about games, as well as people who want a dirt cheap console for their kids or something. It needs exclusives for none of those things.

They don't want to be one of the Microconsoles people stack up to play exclusive games on. They want to be the set top box people go to do everything for. You know, like the Xbox One initially wanted to be when it forgot that it cost 500 friggin dollars.

Remember it's also a counter to the apple tv. That plays games.

Just makes it even worse the square Enix decided to go with that awful screen ratio for the dq ports.

Think I might dump my FireTV while there's still time and get one of these instead. FTV works well, but it's gotten slower and flakier over time, requiring more constant reboots, and Amazon support seems to be mostly an effort to keep people from root them to install custom firmware more than any substantial improvements.

I really like the idea of a micro console but not bundling the controller again makes the gaming aspect half assed.
I like the hardware thougg.

So far, no one delivered a worthwhile one. To be honest, I didn't expect Google to do so anyway but Amazon with their first party studio acquisitions was a big let down, same as the poorly executed Playstation TV.

Anyone know of a list of x86 compatible android games? I want to play Delver or Dragon Quest 4 with a controller on this thing.

This will fail and fail hard. Deservingly so.

I don't know anyone who wants to sit down in front of their TV and play tablet/phone games. Everyone I know wants grand experiences when it comes to living room entertainment.

Just got my wife a fireTV for streaming and she loves it... I'm not seeing anything that does that the FTV doesn't so I don't see any point in getting it.

It's Amazon, they always have deals on things. That's not really indicative of performance. We do have reasonable evidence the Fire Phone did poorly from some independent trackers and the swift and huge permanent price cut, but none with Fire TV. We can only assume it's doing quite well given what we have.

They posted the news in their financial report for the 2nd quarter: http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=176060&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1951181

Fire TV sales have significantly exceeded our sales forecast and we are working hard to increase our manufacturing output. Fire TV app selection has more than doubled since launch due to strong engagement from developers.

I don't want it.... But iv absolutely adored every nexus product iv owned (4, 5, 7, 10) and.... Well I just can't see myself passing on a nexus product now.
