Google reveals most watched games in Youtube history.

Nothing surprising there for me bar P&D.

These are the big, mega popular, casual market franchises that children and teens love. The list may have well have been 'the top ten mainstream games'.

And Nintendo really need to stop being such petty wankers over YouTube. Trying to control everything is just making them irrelevant to the audience they most want.

Mostly predictable placings, but Five Nights and Puzzles and Dragons are surprising. The former only because of how young of a franchise it is.

I'm getting strong r/lewronggeneration vibes from some posters in this thread... Let it go, people. Gaming has become much bigger than our little traditional circles. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Not really surprised by PAD if they're counting Murai and Kosuke's streaming videos in the view count, between the 2 of them they should easily hold like 70% of all the PAD view counts. Their videos average like 300k views and they put them out at industrial quantities (it's literally their day job, their company virtually handles all of PAD's community management in Japan).

I'll sometimes watch a video of someone else clearing a dungeon before trying it myself, especially if it's my first time running it with that team or the online resources aren't very clear on how a particular boss' gimmick works. I also watch videos of people clearing hard dungeons with gimmicky teams, like farmable teams or leading with Lucifer (with the video speed up to 10x... and it's still 20 mins long).

No they aren't... These are just the franchises that are video friendly... Well, mostly. The only traditional franchises here are GTA, Call of Duty, and FIFA. Everything else besides Puzzle & Dragons is MOBA or originally from an Indie. Heck, FNAF isn't even a year old.

Minecraft, Garry's Mod, and the Sims allow for creative endeavors, so it's people showing off something creative in a video. FNAF is scare cam stuff, naturally. LoL and DOTA 2 are the biggest forces in eSports and video friendly. The rest are probably working on the same sort of principles of either creativity with mods or showing off tips for eSports.

FNAF and Garrys mod aside (they are as you said, just video friendly) these are absolutely among the list for current "most popular video games" in general.

WoW is missing, some mobile games could be. But such a top 10 list is very likely to have LOL, DOTA, FIFA, COD, the Sims, GTA, P&D and minecraft on it. Though the sims might have fallen off a bit. Them not being "traditional" video games makes no difference here. The retail space isn't the (only) center of the gaming world anymore.

For those curious, it's Japan and other regions in Asia driving Puzzles & Dragons onto that list. Mobile gaming is huge there, and many creators record/stream themselves beating hard levels in super-clever ways.

Five Nights at Freddy's is pretty crazy to see on this list. Middle-school aged kids can't get enough..

(Disclaimer: I work at YouTube on gaming.)

That answer just opened up more questions. Never heard that name in my life.

This fragmented media landscape is so weird.... massively popular YouTube celebrities... that I've never heard of!

Edit: Just watched it. Wow what a surprise.... a screaming and spazzing YouTuber. Yawn. I'm not hating, more power to him, but there are a lot of 12 year olds out there I guess.....

While he has become more and more like that, 'a screamer' (he wasn't at the start of his "youtube carreer"), I have to give him credit for actually mastering Five Nights at Freddys on the highest difficulty, all of them. Which is as impressive to me as it is insane ;)

Fuck, I'm getting old...

I play video games since 1987, and only played 3 games out of this list (GTA, COD and FIFA).

I know League of Legends and Dota by name, but I have no idea what these games are about.

And I have never even heard of GarryÂ’s Mod or Five Nights at FreddyÂ’s.

This is the most recent result. You shouldn't be surprised at Friday Night at Freddy's especially because it has been releasing game sequels over a whole year so able to gain views consistently from Youtubers. It's chock full of jump scares and since you can't move then it's perfect for reaction videos. Maybe in a year or so it'll be off the list like Amnesia and Slender.

I'm interested in how the YouTube scene is over Sims. Anyone know?

I seriously cant see the point of watching Five nights or Minecraft videos. They really dont seem like they lend themselves too well...

I see the appeal in Freddy's. People who like watching other people get scared, and people who are interested in the series but too scared to play the games by themselves

Can't fight PC, PC/multiplat for these things. Dunno who expected Nintendo to be there. Or Sony for that matter.

PC is the most popular and convenient platform to play, capture, edit, upload and view Youtube.

Puzzles & Dragon is the exception in the top 10.

I know FNaF is popular but that's impressive that it's on the list. P&D is a strange one though. I wouldn't have thought that would have a big presence on Youtube.

None of the Nintendo games are really a youtube first kind of viewership. Or don't rely on the youtube scene.

Except Smash and Mario Kart 8 I'd say, which have quite large user bases and - or so I'd thought - active communities on Youtube. Perhaps not though.

Or how about the upcoming Splatoon?

Splatoon especially might become quite a hit on Youtube if Nintendo plays its cards right. It has all the right ingredients: near universal appeal, cool character designs and quite unique core gameplay (the painting, not the shooting), accessible multiplayer gameplay that allows for a high level of mastery, a focus on customisation of your character and slight RPG (and collecting) elements in the form of your gear's stats, the presence of special events centered around team rivalry, the fact that it will be getting regular new content through free updates, Amiibo support, etc.

It might not be as innovative as Minecraft was, or as e-sporty as something like Dota, but it might appeal to anyone looking to play a cool, colorful multiplayer action game. I'm very curious how this game will do in sales and especially in terms of building a presence on Youtube as a community-driven game.

Refuse to believe Street Fighter isn't on there.

Maybe it's number 11...(it should be!)

I feel so out of touch.

Yep, me too, though I'm amazed I at least know of all the games featured here even if I wouldn't play most of them myself anymore.

Pretty shocked at Freddy's honestly... Only recently have I even heard about it and seen it gain a pretty big following. It still feels like a very, very niche thing and yet it's in the top 10? Incredible...

Oh hey Nintendo... too bad you can't be placing anywhere on this list since you have such anti-youtube sentiment. Sucks to be left in the dust eh?

League of Legends and other games probably get more exposure through Twitch. I'd like to see the stats for that site too and make a comparison.

I knew it has to be minecraft.
others are about right.

a lot of people watch P&D as guides, and the game has a huge, I do mean a huge user base to make that happen, there's nothing surprising about it on the top 10 spot.

Left in the dust like any other console exclusive.

0 chance they could make it, regardless of Youtube policies.

I'd say that Nintendo's monetization policies on YouTube are working directly against the reach of their IPs on the site. They seem to value control and a share of the profits over the word of mouth and eyeballs popular YouTubers bring.

That said, maybe there are other reasons for their irrelevance than their backwards YT policies; after all, Nintendo also has no game in the Twitch Top 20 (and is pretty much the only major publisher left out).

It's going to be a tough climb out of that hole.

Nintendo doesn't even have a console that can stream to Twitch, for one.

Steps to climb out of that hole:

1) come up with a console that can stream to Twitch.

I didn't realise that GTA 1 was so popular, I thought that GTAV would have been more popular.
The same for Call of Duty: Finest Hour, I had no idea a game from 2004 had such presence on You Tube.

most of the watched stuff is done by kids. people older than 16 rarely watch lets plays/games on yt.

my sister (she is 13) and her friends and everyone at her school love to watch minecraft and gta videos. i was baffled when i heard that. when i asked some of them if they PLAY games, maybe 3girls and 2 guys answered that they play videogames(not smartphone games because of an older brother/sister)
while everyone else only plays games on smartphones and tablets.

welcome to the new generation, my fellas.
