Google says iGoogle is soon going the way of Aardvark.

Since Larry Page took the helm as Google chief executive in April 2011, the tech giant has more aggressively closed services to focus on its strengths. Now five more products, including Google Video and iGoogle, are on the chopping block, the company announced Tuesday in a blog post.

Some of these products are getting the axe because they became outdated or redundant, Google said.

Take Google Video, which stopped taking uploads in May 2009. It’s now officially migrating all users’ content to YouTube. Users have until August 20 to “migrate, delete or download” their videos, the company said.

iGoogle, the search giant’s personalized Web portal, launched in 2005. It will retire in November 2013.

iGoogle was created “before anyone could fully imagine the ways that today's web and mobile apps would put personalized, real-time information at your fingertips,” the company said. “With modern apps that run on platforms like Chrome and Android, the need for iGoogle has eroded over time, so we’ll be winding it down.”

Three other services Google is winding down are Google Mini, the Symbian Search App and Google Talk Chatback.

The services join a growing pile of relatively obscure products that Google has purged. A list from September of services to be retired included Aardvark, Fast Flip and Google Pack. The company said it has shut down more than 30 products since last fall.

plz no

Kinda sucks about iGoogle, it was sort of cool.

Google Video though was the definition of redundant. You own Youtube, the biggest video site in the world, why the fuck did you keep it around as long as you did.

I'm surprised Google Video even still existed. They removed it from the general Google tool bar a while ago and just replaced it with Youtube for video search.

never saw the point in iGoogle, but it certainly has a very vocal group of users. Maybe their loud voices will help save it and turn it into something mildly useful

Well, you couldn't upload videos to gvideo since at least 2 years ago. I even thougth that they hade closed it already.

igoogle was cool on 2005. Nowadays not anymore.

Despite iGoogle being my homepage for the past 4 years, I think I've visited it maybe 10 times over that period - and that was only because my tabs didn't reload :lol

Fuck. The only gadget for iGoogle I created was shut down...

It was a countdown to dec 21, 2012 that I had made years ago... I was really looking forward to reading the message I had written myself that would unlock that day.

Noooo, I use iGoogle every day at work to chat to loads of friends. :( It's my homepage too, aargh. I don't want to use Google+, it's a wasteland!

Google Video may be outdated but it needs to be preserved. It's a goldmine for b-movies and public broadcast videos. I doubt all the good stuff has been uploaded to YouTube.

What?! I don't even understand what it is that is making iGoogle "obsolete"... I have had it as my homepage for what seems like forever, and I use it every day.

That's what Chrome and webapps + add-ons are for.
Will they really be shown on the same page, at the same time that way?
I know this sounds lazy, but it was very convenient to have everything on the same page, and I don't know a lot about webapps and add-ons.

I never go to Google directly anymore since I can search in the address bar in Chrome.
Same here.

Same here.

Well i currently use an add on that will show me the ammount of emails and google voice messages in my accounts. Then when I click on the button it shows my latest email/message info... not the whole message mind you. If i want to check the mail I just click on it.

Of course that is the add on that I use... there are many others that probably do other things.

I don't really miss these services specifically, but the death of Google Labs is pretty shitty. Some great work came out of that initiative. That always seemed to be what Google was about in the 00's, as opposed to their transition to chasing the social dollar this decade.

Yeah, them killing off Labs felt really weird. I never totally understood it, and like you said, it seems to go against a lot of what Google used to be about.

What will be the alternative for iGoogle where I can see my mail, google reader feed, news, weather etc all from one page??

I wish they would kill that stupid +1 button. I stay logged out of my google account because of the stupid thing.

I'm another that has iGoogle as their home page. What else can I use to show two separate inboxes (not both Gmail), a google search bar and RSS feeds on one page when I open a new tab?
