It takes a while to appreciate something good I remember the first time listening to OK Computer I thought it was the worst thing ever then I experience a bit more life and it made perfect sense you really have to grow as music listener to appreciate new music. Madvillainy is another album that took a while for me to appreciate but I kept going back to it.

So, someone help me understand the exact meaning of this song/music video. I think 90% of it went over my head.

Edit: I like the new serious blame space.

Listen to the lyrics.

This is our tree, at night, the "scarecrows" from the east come to steal it's fruit, so we'll build a wall to protect it. It will be big, it will be thick, and it will ruin us. Thank you for trusting me, hallelujah money.

I mean, it's a screaming metaphor for what we're about to step into.

The video has all kinds of racist and sexist imagery.

I bet Albarn knew exactly how most people would react to this song and the video.

This is like anti-pop. I think it's a response to mindless party music ignoring the scary shit that is happening in the world. I wonder how many people like Gorillaz because you can dance to them and not even think about what the message of the music is.

I mean, that was the response to Feel Good Inc.
People ignored what Demon Days as an album was actually about.

every frame of that video is fucking beautiful.

I will admit, watching it again is making me appreciate the video more. When I first saw this, I was turned off because it looked like they couldn't find a budget. I was expecting something more boombastic visually and audibly. But I look at this and it is kind of imitating the visual look of a youtube video. But it is doing it in a very artsy and minimalist way. It reminds me of an episode of the Jimquisition, but with art direction. There are some fantastic visual moments here. The cheapness of the video kind of fits in with the message of the song. Yeah, I see it.

It is bizarre. I love it.

Wow that music video is fucking amazing. The song itself isn't the type of Gorillaz tracks I listen to but it's still pretty damn effective.

Hype is through the roof for the rest of the album.

Maybe they mean Human After All? :p IIRC wasn't RAM warmly received by critics and fans alike? Their teaser track was like the opposite of this song too, a catchy pop hit.
I know a lot of people loved it on release but the reception since seems less than stellar. Its a solid idea that's well done but incredibly shallow and watered down which is my issue with it.

Gaf's taste in music continues to confuse me. That was awful, as was the video. I'm not being edgy here, I like things. But wtf was that?

whose account is this

I dunno what that image means.. ? This is my account ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But yeah really. The video is framed like a youtube video. With the speaker in the dead center and always surrounded by stock footage or obscure/ commonly used images. I think that is what they are going for visually. The Jimquisition was the first one to come to mind. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

hope you're listening with headphones, and try to get familiar with the lyrics so you aren't lost with his vocals due to the odd melody. There's a lot of texture and layers to the music and it's not a very immediate song. Lots of little bits adding up to an unnerving yet beautiful whole

As others, I'm a big fan of Gorillaz but... this just isn't clicking for me. Plastic Beach didn't click for me at first because I'm not extremely big into hip hop, but it eventually grew on me and many of the songs are now some of my favorites of their many albums.

But this song? I see its spot as far as commentary. The visuals, singing and background are haunting yet have a beauty to them... but the song just didn't click. The singer's vibrating singing just didn't do it for me. I don't know if I'll listen to it often if at all once the album is out.

It likely isn't their hit single. I expect plenty of solid songs. But this likely won't be one of them. Hmmm. Have they announced a release date for the album yet?

We know nothing except Raury, Vic Mensa, and Twilite Tone did work on it

ah these fucks love teasing and not giving solid information they've been doing it for so many freaking months now haha. Guess I'll keep waiting. Hopefully with another video they'll finally announce a release date for the album.

De la soul is on the album too.
David Bowie was maybe supposed to do some work but unfortunately he passed, I doubt he got anything done
Del may also be on the album.

Ah yeah nice, totally forgot. Thanks for the reminder!

Don't think Del made it (and there are rumors that Bowie either did record or was meant to record for it)

De La is back tho, and so is Snoop.

Admittedly it's slightly better while not watching the video, but still just not enjoyable to listen to.

We need a Danny Brown feature.

I'm not much of a fan either, watered down is about right.

Totally into this. I learned after Stylo came out to give their songs multiple listens to let them sink in. Some people were weirded out by this track but man if you've listened to either M1A1's creepy intro or Fire Coming out of a Monkey's head this is par for the course, theres more examples but that's off the top of my head.
