Gothic country music and why you should check it out

Really surprised to see no mention of 16 Horsepower and/or Woven Hand so far. Very "hellfire and brimstone" type music.

Woven Hand - Good Hand

16 Horsepower - Hutterite Mile

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cie6uBhEzCg

Both bands are vehicles of David Eugene Edwards:

Holy Sons kind of fits the bill, solo project of Grails' Emil Amos and one of my favorite bands. He's more likely to mix a krautrock or a Morricone influence, but to great effect.

Holy Sons - Slow Days

Holy Sons - Kindred Spirit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eNii2TIbuM&feature=related

Holy Sons - Gnostic Device
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aGoMOJbMwY&feature=related

Another artist that should be mentioned is Michael Gira, for his work with Swans and The Angels of Light.

The Angels of Light - My True Body:

That's good for now but I know I have some more of this kind of stuff on my hard drive, so I might come back and revise this post with some more if anyone cares for it.

Gothic Country crosses over into altcountry/no depression/whatever you want to call it every now and again. I've heard some of these artists before.

Yeah, somebody already brought up 16 Horsepower, but Woven Hand is another great one. I love their self-titled debut.

Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks - Sabella

Another favorite of mine. Here's a great track:

The Ballerina's Twirl

Gillian Welch is awesome. I've seen her and David Rawlings live before.

Neko Case's solo stuff qualifies too, I think, especially the stuff on Fox Confessor. Star Witness is my fav

I really enjoyed that. What album would you recommend I check out by her?

She's only got two real big solo releases. She had some earlier efforts but Fox Confessor Brings the Flood and Middle Cyclone are the two most polished, recent, and best. Id grab both of them. Fox Confessor first, though.

welp, I dont like country and I dont like gothic. Im not sure if this is going to help.

Won't hurt to try it out. Let us know what you think.

Honestly, this isn't the kind of "country" you are thinking of when you hear the word. This stuff has more to do with 50s and 60s rock/rockabilly/oldschool country/punk/surf guitar/stuff you would expect to hear on a Tarantino soundtrack than it does Garth Brooks or Toby Keith or whatever.

I wasn't aware of this genre until a month or so ago.
Love me some Woven Hand and 16 Horsepower. Since those were already mentioned, I can't contribute much here :(

sweet, the only goth county band i knew of were murder by death and builders and the butchers and nike 12( big Tiger army fan here).Glad to expand on this genre.

Really digging Jay Munly and Tarantella, will check out the rest later. Good shot posting this, I love discovering new music, especially when it's a genre I'd never have thought to try lol. Thanks.

I never even knew this kind of genre exsisted :D Just bought Munly album from iTunes and will buy more tomorrow ;) Thanks for the thread.

So, er... would Murder By Death's album Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them be considered Gothic Punk?

kind of what i was thinking upon entering the thread

Op nailed it in the first go with Munly out of Colorado.

I submit the now defunct Deadbillies.
Killing Moon cover

Silver Tongue Devil
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2l7HCKVEnk
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/deadbillys <- You can still buy their alubm here.
www.deadbillies.com

Some of Dead Combo's songs are dirgey and gloomy with a Latin instrumental Flavor.

Now that I think of it, Calexico out of Tucson has a few desert and death sounds as well.
Gypsy's Curse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfidKiHSlbw

Black Heart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyidcRn3BVk

Regarding DeVotchKa, their third album, 'How it Ends', was recorded and mixed in Tucson, and it has a decidedly Spaghetti Western feel to it.

Dude, thanks for introducing me to Calexico. They rock.

Right on! They are pretty fantastic and have forged new sounds with the only Female led Mariachi band, 'La Luna de Luz'. Any Calexico album is in heavy rotation whenever I roadtrip across the desert., I suggest you start with the albums 'Black Light' or 'Hot Rail'.

Yeah, I've listened to Black Light already, and I can definitely see myself listening to this on a road trip through the desert. Love the Latin flavor.

Pretty nice!

CW is great, got a couple of his albums. He tells a great story in each all songs related and the like.
His lyrics remind me of some of Nick Caves stuff from the Murder Ballads period. Not really similar musically, but the lyrics have a similar feel to me.

The lack of Melchiah in this thread is depressing. I miss my Finish goth-guru - dude is so fucking rad, he sleeps in a bedroom that looks like an abandoned hospital. He knows the way he wants to live life and goes 10000% for it, I have nothing but respect for that!

Reminds me of Nick Cave, Who i like listening to a lot more to be honest.

I really should start listening to Nick Cave. Don't know why I haven't yet. Album recommendations?

Dig! Lazurus Dig! is currently my favorite, but I'm sure fans will recommend Murder Ballads over that. His albums aren't the same, so I recommend you spend some time on Amazon.com, Itunes, or Zunes checking stuff out, to see where his music takes you.

Been listening to Nick Cave lately and I'm sitting here wondering, "Where the fuck have I been?"

Here's something very different by versatile hip hop artist Astronautalis:

Holy Water

Off his latest album, This Is Our Science.

Abstract hip hop mixed with alternative/Gothic country. Fucking awesome sound.

Went to the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, Az last night and saw one complete rocking show, the tour ends in Austin, Tx on 11/26/2011 I HIGHLY recommend anyone remotely interested in this genre to go see it!

All bands were one man or one woman artists.

Scott H. Biram - Austin, Tx Plays Blues and Pscyhedelia (has music on Sons of Anarchy Season 3 soundtrack and in the show)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOEgtOXhcts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiwwNFDTg50

Joe Buck Yourself - Tennesee Punk and country (Think Slayer meets a moonshine still) He plays upright bass in Hank III and played some guitar in Th' Legendary Shack Shakers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6_MZ9Uqqko
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kdlwocvldY

Molly Gene One Whoaman Band - Missouri bluegrass and a hybrid punk blues with some gospel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqY7ZC4ysc8

Now, the above don't necessarily fit the Gothic Country genre, but each of them deserve a listen if you are remotely interested in Americana Roots with a dark or faster hard edge.

Do Legendary Shack Shakers count? They mix folk, country, and a little punk with lyrics that are pretty dark at times. The song I linked might be a little bit too upbeat.

Th' Legendary Shack Shakers count as far as I am concerned as they are Revival, punk and Bluegrass.

Did you know their frontman J.D. Wilkes is a bona-fide Kentucky Colonel?

Pretty much any of the bands listed in this thread could be a backdrop for some backwoods horror show or murder spree...

you know it to be true. :)

So I started listening to the tarantella stuff, and its really good. Subscribed to this thread. Never really heard anything like this before.
