I can't vote. But I would pick Fallout 3.

I created extra PSN accounts just so I could Platinum it more times.

🤔 ...GAF rates Dead Space 1 as almost equal to Fallout 3... !? That comes as a massive surprise to me. I guess I should finally unseal my copy and play it on my Xbone (or PC... I own it digitally on that too).

I loved 2008. That was probably my favourite year of gaming, last gen.

PS. I have MGS4 too, complete in the card slipcase and I haven't even installed on either of my PS3's yet. Don't hate me GAF; my backlog of games goes back to 1984. Life can be a challenge as a platform+generation agnostic gamer.

I'm sorry but I remember 7th gen as the period when Western devs were kicking the Japanese's ass in terms of game development, now it just seems like people are trying to wash that away as if the 7th gen wasn't an amazing gen even without them delivering.
Doesn't mean there weren't good Japanese games. I don't know how you think and I don't really care but please take your head out of your ass for once

I'm starting to think that a lot of people who "hate" this game haven't even played it and just hate it because it was popular to hate Sonic games back then. Personally i really enjoyed playing it casually (Apotos is one of my favorite towns in any game) although to be honest i'm not the biggest Sonic fan.
As as Sonic fan since the Genesis, that has played literally every main Sonic game, Unleashed is awful. The Sonic gameplay is the epitome of everything that was wrong from that era of Sonic, prioritizing boosting and speed and brain-dead level design over solid platforming. Then you have the Werehog levels that are a half-baked beat-em-up with inconsistent controls, repetitive enemies, and levels that go on forever. And it takes up 70% of the entire game. And you have to constantly replay them to collect the sun and moon medals because later levels require an absurd amount to be able to progress. And the framerate is awful. And the final level is one of the most miserable experiences in all of video games. And Chip.

I could go on, but it's really, really not a good game, and I'll go out on a limb and say the only reason people look back fondly on it was because it was the game that came after Sonic 2006, and anything would look better after that.

Yeah, do it, Dead Space is great. So's 2, avoid 3.

MGS4 is basically only any use to MGS fans, but it's great. It tied (mostly) everything up in a nice neat little bow and acted like a greatest hits and tribute to the series. Then Kojima went and made 5 anyway.

Nothing in that list really blew me away. L4D and Dead Space are up there though...
I'd vote Braid, No More heroes or even Professor Layton & The Curious Village.
And the game I played most that year was warhammer online, really liked it wanting something new after WoW.

Its a crime that you didn't list Lost Odyssey, the game is criminally underrated, not sure if its GOTY but should get a nomination at least.
Is lost odyssey gonna be the new psychonauts/okami/shadow of the colossus? Why do people call games that got 8/10s across the board or higher underrated?

My pick goes to: Dead Space
Innovated so much in the horror genre, and 3d UI visualization, it was a really fresh experience.

MGS4 for me was super boring, it was more of an interactive movie than a game. and even the game aspects where bad. I stil remember that empty city at night. Only good thing was teh final battle with you know who.

Braid should probably be on the list. Not only was it a fantastic and unique game, it paved the way for indie games to find an audience.

No but they can be relative, as in some people underate this game because it's niche.
That's not relative that's just misuse of words. Underrated and niche aren't mutually exclusive terms, but they don't share the same meaning.

Niche - Appealing to a smaller than average, specific audience
Underrated - Generally rated lower than it should be.

The game has a 78 critic score and 84 user score on metacritic. It hasn't been underrated by any stretch. Logically, if anything, being niche causes games to be overrated due to the bias of largely being played by fans of the series/genre vs general releases reaching a much wider audience of further differing opinions.

I don't know how to vote but my 2008 GOTY is without a question GTA IV. I'm replying it currently in 4k 60 on PC and it aged very well. Characters, story, more serious 'noire' atmosphere, THE CITY, physics, driving model... one of my favorite games ever.

Let me nip this in the bud. I have an opinion, you have yours. My opinion is just as valid as yours. I think its underrated, you think your smarter than you are. Lets agree to disagree.

Loved mostly games in the list but...

Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the best games I ever played in my life.

What I voted here in 2008 continue being the same today... the game holds astronomic well today... it is like fine wine... it only gets better with the time.

Unfortunately, opinions don't apply to objective facts such as the meaning of words. I can't fly by jumping off a roof regardless of if I have superpowers "in my opinion"

Wait, did I say it was fact? I said it was opinion. Tut tut matey you seem to want an argument which I won't be giving to you sorry.

1.- MGS4 for me, i was expecting that game literally years, after playing MGS2 the conclussion was long awaited by me.

2.- Mirrors Edge was a huge surprise to me, so underrated game

3.- Its kind of Sad when you look Fallout 3 then, and Fallout 76 now......Bethesda is killing the franchise, in aesthetics, desing, lore, dialogue simplification etc.

MGS4, despite being a flawed game, is still a masterpiece. The first two levels in particular are some of the best gaming there is, its just a shame they didn't have time to create a few more areas in that vein. The multiplayer was also phenomenal and nothing has really replicated it since. So MGS4 is my goty 2008 for sure.

Out of the games in the list I played, it should be GTA IV or Fallout 3 but the polish and originality of Deadspace just beats those.

Metal Gear Solid 4 blows everything away for me, was the reason I got back into PlayStation and I played the game over and over again till the end of the generation.

Who the hell are these people voting mgs4 !?!?!

We want some answer !!!

Snake?!?!.. Snake?!?!? Snaaaaaakeeeeeee?!?!??!?

Im one of them

For me, it was Gears of War 2. Thus far, the best in the series.
