Oddworld is quite possibly one of the most unique and creative game franchises of the past couple generations. Birthed from the game genius Lorne Lanning (for those who don't know), the series originally debuted on the original PlayStation. Featuring cutting edge cinematics, challenging yet immersive gameplay and twisted humor to boot the game was released to wide appreciation and more or less solid sales. Since then the series has managed to grace its way on to a variety of platforms (PlayStation, PC, Game Boy/Color, Game Boy Advance and concluding on the original Xbox) and garner up a dedicated following. However with lackluster sales with the games final release (Stranger's Wrath) Lorne has decided to move away from video game development and instead focus on motion pictures, whether that involves the Oddworld universe or not is unknown at this time. So with the series on hold, lets appreciate what's already been given to us.

PSN/XBLA remakes of the first two please.

I really wonder what they're up to, they haven't said anything in years. Hopefully there's still game development going on despite them going into video

Great games. I've only beaten the first one, but I have all of them. I remember being so pissed when they announced Munch's Oddysee for XBOX instead of PS2.

The first is an all time classic, it's such a perfectly laid out adventure from beginning to end. Atmosphere still feels unique even to this day.
I love to get lost and explore the virtual flora and fauna in open ended games and Oddworld does this better than any other 2D game. Hint of rural instruments, wind, animal life..etc being heard as you explore.

hehehe

okay

sorry

one of my fav gmes of all time. Well the first 2 on Psone.

I didn't even the first xbox one and I didn't play strangers wrath unfortunately but I heard it was pretty good. Can it play on 360?

Hey guys looks like there is potential for a new oddworld game based on the new movie. Here a link to an article regarding the future of oddworld.

Moreover, according to an article posted on Gamedaily in September of 2008, Lorne Lanning is working on a next generation Oddworld game, as well as some other interactive products. During the Gamedaily interview, when asked about the next Oddworld game, Lanning replied: “Something’s next and we haven’t been talking about it“. He then went on to say: “Ideas and innovation are like a fetus in the womb. There’s a reason no one gets to see the baby for nine months. Ideas incubate in privacy better, longer. We have been taking a while (with Oddworld) and that is disappointing to some fans. But we believe if we deliver excellence, they’ll be thrilled. All is forgiven if you do it right“.

To make things even more interesting, according to an article posted on gamesetwatch in December of 2008, when asked about upcoming projects, Lanning replied: “We’ve still got secrecy around another “Hollywood meets gaming” project that we’re very excited about, and while it’s taken us a while, we’re also working on something new for Oddworld. He also went on to say: “We’re open to exploring how to best maximize our existing library, but haven’t been focused on creating huge story games with 40 hours of linear gameplay recently. We’ve been focused on a slightly different chemistry that we believe will prove appealing to gamers and Oddworld fans alike, but it’s a big risk because it’s way outside the box“.

some of the most fantastical creatures and environments ever conceived ever were from the first two abe games. holy crap i loved playing those brutally hard games.

haven't played stranger's wrath but looks a little too characterized and silly compared to the mood and feel of the abe games. i've only seen screens/video/art though, so i'm not 100%. anyone care to comment on how different they feel?

I have such fond memories for Oddword: Abe's Oddysee, it was one of the first video games I'd ever played.

It was fun, challenging and had some of the greatest character designs ever. <3 Elum.

As a kid, I always remembered the games being extremely challenging (especially Oddysee) and sadly never managed to complete either game. :(

I recently went through both of them again though and to my surprise, blazed through both of them quite quickly, with little difficulty.
Even the hidden areas, which I didn't even dare attempt as a kid, I found to be quite easy now.

They were still as enjoyable as ever though, I don't think there was ever a moment I truly hated in either game.

So yeah, Oddworld = Awesome.

Stranger's Wrath is a goddamn amazing game. I'm not sure it's perfect, but it combines a plethora of elements extremely well.

I wrote a post on my blog extolling the virtues of Stranger's Wrath at the beginning of the year, and Sherry McKenna commented on it with a personal thanks. Now that's impressive fan interaction. :D

Holy shit, fuck yeah!! Hiphopgamer really is becoming my favorite newsplace!

Next-gen as in PS4/720 or still this gen though?

confirmed that they are working on a new Oddworld game. In fact, Braun told the audience that the game would feature a “revolutionary new 3-D animation system” that would feature “cinematic quality on a ‘1 to 1 scale’ to that of computer-generated motion pictures” and would utilize the same assets as a CG film version.
Next gen it is!

I remember hearing that Maxis were working on a new one?

But yeah, loved this series! Was sorely disappointed when Munch moved to XBox. Fond memories of the old ones, though - I would literally kill to see 'em on PSN.

One of my favourite levels in Abe's Exoddus: Scrabania Vault Ender. Absolutely superb design.

I absolutely looooooooooove this series. I played through the first two games recently (again). Hell, I might do it....AGAIN. :D

Was an interview with Lanning in Edge. I speculate that they're going to try the movie route- and go back to games if they are popular. It will help them hugely in terms of attracting publishers.

Or stop port begging and just buy it on Steam.

I never played Munch or Stranger's Wrath, but so many fond memories of the 2D titles.

Really need to dig them out now!

Only played the Abe games, but damn they were awesome. Great puzzles, and great humour too. I should replay them one of these days.

I really wish they would at least make Stranger's Wrath backward compatible on the triple 6...It is a shame that my copy is just collecting dust, when I never even got to finish it right after the big reveal. I remember being stuck on a part where I had to direct a boat downstream, but I kept constantly getting lost.

The ps1 games were something so totally different from anything else iv played. Fantastic, story, characters, places and design. What really set it apart though was how the game was made to so edge of your seat. Like in sequences where your getting chased by the dogs and you jump onto a ledge having the dogs miss you by cm's.

I have yet to see anything like that in any game after that.

Awesome series. Very unique. After the first Abe game didn't they say there were going to be about 7 games in the Oddworld universe? Obviously that would have changed, but I would've changed, but damn I would love to see what all those games could have been.

I remember playing Abe's Oddysee back then when I was a kid. My mom loved watching me play the game. At that time our home was filled with us speaking like the oddworld inhabitants :lol

The game was way too difficult for me though, I never finished the game. I think I was stucked half-way through.

There was an interview with Lorne Lanning in Game Informer a few months back detailing a canceled Oddworld project - it's not the one referred to earlier in this thread, though.

According to the interview, it seems like they want to go the DD/microtransaction route with the next one (which is apparently why they put up Oddysee and Exoddus on Steam - to test the waters).

Strangers Wrath was an amazing game but just a shame it got overlooked by many, really must play through it again sometime soon.

You guys should really grab the previous issue of game informer, it had an interview with Lanning about the developpement of Fangus Klot and the game was going to be darkest in the oddworld universe.
Oh and i know it's on steam already, but they should really release the exodus and oddysey episodes on psn/arcade.

I just wish the game had been made backward compatible before Microsoft put Xbox Originals on the chopping block. I wonder if there's a remote chance that Oddworld themselves would work on a patch to make it playable on 360... Probably not though.

I'm still hoping...

What movie? I would love to see an Oddworld styled game for Tim Burton's upcoming movie Nine...I think the two would fit perfectly together. My love for my 360 prohibits me from adding any hits to the guy's gamershow because of his excessive pimping of all things Sony, and belittling of all things MS.
