Gran Turismo PSP IGN Review

If you didn't know this game didn't have a career mode then you pretty much didn't follow the game at all.

And I pretty much didn't. Can I be disappointed now?

If GT PSP is half assed....I worry about GT5....hmmm.

I wouldn't. I don't see much reason to correlate the two.

Maybe GT PSP is half assed because of GT5.

It's perfectly reasonable to at least expect the mode that made GT unique in a GT game.

Like mentioned before in this thread, GT Mobile is a supplement to GT5. There is no fucking way that GT5 will be the same "quality" of GTM.

It almost seems like the lack of career mode was intentional.

Bad decision.
Isn't it strange that all we heard was "yeah, we're still working on this game" and PD even said that it's not gonna be released before Gran Turismo 5... and all of a sudden they announce the release is set for October?

wow a supposed launch game ends up a rush job after 4 years in the making

sad.. really sad.. i mean sure the graphical quality of the first PSP screens are more then matched now with games like ridge racer or burnout legends.. but seriously. what about the GT fans that bought a PSP only to play Gran Turismo on it..

IGN has always had the problem of comparing PSP games to their console brethren and not taking them for what they are
Well, when the game was annoucned (what, 5 years ago), it was going to be a port of GT4, so the omission of career mode is a pretty big one.

That said, the score still seems to be harsh, on the scale that US sites seem to love this game is awful, which is frankly, bollocks. I'm still buying it, but I can't help but dream of what might have been.

Isnt Ad-Hoc = Wireless- Lan ? So you need a PC/Ps3 or some kind of tunnel software to play it online ? If so then Mario Kart on Cube also was online :-)

Or you just round up the friends and play together. Or AD Party through PSN.

no as 'it's not gonna be released before Gran Turismo 5' was never said and in fact since gtm's reveal the line has always been 'it will release before gt5'.

Looks like the wait for the PS3 version continues.

I still think it (the PSP version) will sell well, but as a non-fan of racing games, I think I'll wait for the one driving game I can show off for years (i.e. GT5).

Don't really care for one review. Especially by IGN.

The lack of a career mode doesn't bother me. I play my psp on the can or something so I don't have a need to delve into something deep. Easy to pick up and play pocket-racer is all I want.

i'll say it now. as far as i;m concerned PSP is way better than PS3, 360 or Wii

Wha wha whaaat?

My good man, I think the PSP is a fine device, but better than the PS3 and 360 you say?

Is there still a deal to get it for free with PSP Go purchase? If so, I guess I can't complain much about the missing modes etc. as long as the driving part works at least as it did in GT4.

As people have stated, when the game was re-announced, all of that changed.

Wow. That's about 2.5 points lower than I would have expected.

Portable games can't really score higher than an 8 anyhow. A 9 score for a portable game is virtually impossible.

Missing a key feature of a series is almost always worth 2 points off what the score would've been otherwise.

No career mode? Hmm, so it's just arcade mode?
I'm not sure you're allowed in this thread ;)

That's a low score, especially by IGN's over-scoring standards. I wonder if it would have done better if it didn't have the GT name to live up to?

I agree with him, though I'm not going to rule out the PS3/360 catching up at some point since the PSP is slowing down a little.

Half the people in this don't even own a PSP. Hating on GT is just the cool thing to do.

Anyway, this is still day on. Though, the lack of career mode is a letdown.

Let's be serious here, a 6.8 from IGN and 7 from Eurogamer are not encouraging scores for a game that we have been waiting for since PSP launched :(

That was unexpected.

I can't even think of a Gran Turismo without a career mode, color me somewhat disappointed.

They can't read Japanese so no Ad-hoc Party?

I could have sworn I remember reading that the Ad-hoc Party mode was coming to NA too. There's no mention of it in the review though.......

There are two main single-player modes, Driver Challenges and the simply-titled Single Player. The latter is essentially just a quick race option, allowing you to either take on a standard race, time trial or drift challenge on any of the game's tracks (they're all unlocked from the start).

...

You don't unlock new cars (at least that I ever found) or anything of the like.

Awesome.
This is actually perfect for a portable game. You can just pick up and play, race any car on any track you like. No bullshit expensive ass cars to unlock.

Sucks for those that enjoy the career grind, but oh well, they can pick up GT5 for that! :p

No matter what anybody says, I think career mode is pretty much an obligation in the series :o

No it's not. On portable, it's definitely not.

I am aware of the change, but it still doesn't mean I don't wish it wasn't true, nor make the omission of a career mode any easier to take.

I love Gran Turismo, and have put more hours into the series than any other racer, yet I have played....none of the arcade modes, this game will force me to take the plunge but to me, GT = the career mode.

As I said, I will still buy the game, I need me some GT action before GT5, but GT2 is not going to lose it's place in my PSP rotation, that's for sure.

I disagree with the "hating on GT" thing. Most GAFers appreciate the series and the man behind it. Even the Forza fans.

However, your first point probably has some truth to it because I don't own a PSP. But I was going to get a PSP GO GT bundle this Christmas. I thought the Career mode would keep me busy through all the usual dull family gatherings. Now it won't.

Just throwing it out there as someone who does not have a particular interest in Gran Turismo games: I'm surprised by how many people are just shrugging off the lack of a career mode as if it ain't no thang. For fuck's sake, Sega Rally Revo, Outrun 2006 and the Burnouts all have career modes, all of which play brilliantly and work perfectly for a handheld gaming standard. The game could still be totally engaging and worth playing without it for all I know, but not having a career mode isn't just some "necessary evil" omission to make the game more portable friendly, and trying to argue that it's the case is ridiculous. Especially when another game coming out at the same time from another developer within the company (Motorstorm) is supposedly fully featured.

Well, no.

"In an interview with Jo*stiq, Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi explained that the PSP version of Gran Turismo is still "actively in development" and reiterated that the title would not be completed until Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)."

Source is Joystiq, hope they aren't banned anymore.

Some reason why they couldn't just have Career Mode and a Quick Play mode?
Because they didn't want to delay the game another 10 years or they were lazy? I don't know. But out of those two options, I'm glad quick play is there at least.

This is the first fucking portable game in the series, all the other games not only had a career mode, they were completely built around them. A GT game with no career mode is pretty fucked up, regardless of how people insist it's ok. It just isn't. Nothing to do with fanboyism or Sony hate either. It just makes the game worth a lot less for lots of people.

There are many great racing games on the PSP, just because it has Gran Turismo name on it doesn't mean it has to have a 9+ score or necessarily better than all other racers out there. Maybe it's a good chance for people that don't always buy racer to try something else other than Gran Turismo.

Damn i wanted this game so bad and for so many years, that my dissapointment is even bigger.
Anyone known if there is gonna be a Demo (anyways the No carrer mode is a 30-40% less interest in the game)

As far as I'm concerned, what seperates GT from other racing games is the feel of the controls. Every review seems to indicate that they got this part right. Fine, dodge it a few marks for no career mode, I could give two shits when the gameplay is good.
