Gran Turismo Sport announced

It's the next iteration in terms of it debuting the new physics, sound and graphics. That doesn't make it a mainline GT.

I'm not making assumptions. I'm the only one providing reason. If this were a GT7 there would be no confusion, regardless of the title.

Again, you are just making assumptions on what you want "next iteration" to mean.

And so are you.

GT HD Concept, GT5 Prologue, are both iterations of GT. Calling GT Sport an iteration does not mean it is a full fledged entry in the same scope as a numbered one.

If this is intended to be a replacement for GT7, it's very poor messaging on their part.

Jim Ryan confirmed this is NOT GT7 as expected (it wouldn't have made sense to create such a confusion if it was imo).

“We’re not announcing Gran Turismo 7 at this stage,” Ryan told Eurogamer plainly.

“Fair to say [series director Kazunori Yamauchi] has been making these games for some considerable time now. I think it’s reasonable to assume that something else might come down the road. Is it a Prologue? No, I think it’ll be more that".

“The old days, when the games were offline, the experience was defined by what’s on the disc. You had a distinction between a Prologue and a full GT, it was very stark. When the game becomes more of an online connected experience, that distinction blurs. This will be much more than a Prologue type experience.”

So basically it's a Prologue but since it's online,it can be trasformed into a service adding things and events and they're doing something new with the FIA they're not calling it a Prologue. At least they're confident they will deliver the game (not just the beta) next year.

He doesn't even know what it is. Kaz is there and he'll inevitably be interviewed by someone.

Hopefully but imo adding the infos together it's clear this is a hybrid between a Prologue and GT Academy with a strong online component and attempting the e-sports card with the FIA license.
The next fully fledged game is still a long way off and that's a big disappointment to me.
Let's see what kind of tecnical innovations compared to GT6 they can bring in Sport...

So how did Gran Turismo 5 Prologue compared to the full version of Gran Turismo 5?

If Sport is pretty much a new prologue it might be good to have and idea of how small or big it might be based on past attempts at this.

Guys, if this was GT7, it would be called GT7. Pretty simple.

Maybe this isn't Prologue or a demo or GT7... maybe... it is just a "different" GT game. PD has been throwing around different approach since GTHD so something that breaks from the traditional mold shouldn't be too surprising.

GT5P was both better looking and better playing than both GT5 and 6, so there's that. Also had the most stable framerate out of all ps3 entries.

Well that's disappointing. So much for getting GT7 out before 2017 like they planned.

At least it sounds much bigger than a prologue. Plus we've got project cars and soon assetta corsa to hold us over.

They really need to nail down that 3 year dev cycle though.

I don't understand the confusion.

This isn't GT7, or a Prologue game. This is basically 'Gran Turismo does motorsport' with special emphasis on online, league style sim racing.

What matter handle/physics is way better in GT5/6 than GT5:P.
That is the reason it is more stable... GT5:P do a lot less than GT5/6 in terms of simulations.

The idea of a racing league with country and manufacturer support is awesome. Seasons and trophies etc. if the entire game is based around getting you into actually racing competitively then damn! That's awesome.
This is my takeaway as well.

I don't get the hang up around this being a mainline GT. The more important aspect is that GTS seems to be pushing the racing genre forward.

BTW for me.

GT5 > GT6 > GT5:P

GT5 was the masterpiece racing game from last gen... so complete... GT6 was a step down with some nice new features.

GTPlanet said there will be a campaign & arcade mode. I hope that they will put effort in the offline portion of this as I have no interest in the online part.

By the time GT6 came out they were talking about a platform to be extended on for many years. I expect something like Destiny with major updates and expansions but still as one big whole world/game. And thats why IMO we dont have a number .

Sport doesnt sound good to me, its usually the sporty car model someone buys because they cant afford the full fledged racing or gt or rs version, lol.

Sport in this instance is in reference to the motor sport or racing sport aspect, and not so much the car type. I see this as almost as a rebranding of Gran Turismo, instead of yearly releases with minimal changes as seen in previous titles and other competing titles they move to the driveclub model where GT is a service. They need to do that with a lot of games such as FIFA, MADDEN, NHL, and NBA.

That would be something very challenging to achieve, since Top Gear destroyed the car few years ago.

They don't need the real car. Polyphony modelled the Isuzu 4200R (which was destroyed decades ago) from reference photos and it looks perfect.

Then the GT6 was running a comical superlow setting version of the engine - like modders are doing it to run games like Witcher 3 on years old laptops.

Considering that the original assets for premiums are "scaled down for the PS3" outside of Photo mode - http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/are-premiums-scaled-down-during-a-race.241524/

The higher res assets they have shouldn't be out of place when utilized for GT Sport.

One would just need to compare the photomode to what we have in the trailer. The lightning and material shader solution are already in a different league to that.

Calling it GT6 graphix is quite something.

I'm shocked reading what Jim Ryan has had to say today. Sony and Kaz should be ashamed, especially given recent history.

This from the description of the GTS trailer:

Building on its legacy as the most realistic and accessible driving simulator, GT Sport has partnered with the FIA to push the boundaries of racing games. In addition to everything you'd expect from a GT, the team at Polyphony and the FIA are introducing an online racing series that will be recognized alongside real world motor racing by the FIA

The bold clearly indicates to me this is a full GT game. To now state this is some kind of spin-off/Prologue/online focused FIA game is ridiculous. I just can't see there being a full-ish GTS game and a GT7. Also Kaz has for the last couple of years been answer questions re: GT7 (one of the latest answers being we'll be playing [GT7] before 2017.

I actually wonder if Jim Ryan knows anything about GT? May be Kaz has punished SCEE for when Michael Denny leaked GT6!
