Grand Slam Tennis 2 announced (PS3/360)

Agreed.

I actually thought the demo was very good, much better than I expected it to be in all honesty. Presentation, graphics (bar the crowds) and animation are outstanding, as you'd expect from an EA Sports games, but the addition of commentary is a really nice touch, though it remains to be seen how varied it is in the full game. Game feels nicely balanced to me, somewhere between the arcadey Virtua Tennis 4 (which was a disappointment after no. 3 IMO) and the tough sim-like Top Spin 4. Enjoyed it enough to pre-order the Xbox 360 version straight after playing it anyway.

Have you watched/played tennis in real life? The animations in the demo are horrifying.

Presentation is fantastic, but I'm not sold on the gameplay yet. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet, but I found the right analog stick difficult to use.

Damn, I'm disappointed. I'm a big tennis fan and was hoping this to be more of a tennis-sim in the vein of Top Spin than an arcade game like Virtua Tennis (unfortunately for me, it's leaning towards the latter). I haven't played the first Grand Slam Tennis, so I didn't expect the players to be running insanely fast.

I really like the presentation and graphics, they are top notch. EA gave extra attention to the players' habits and strokes such as Nadal's tendency to adjust his hair before serving and his over the head forehand. It would be funny if he actually pulls his shorts and adjusts his bottles before leaving his seat. I don't understand the slice animations though, they look wrong. There's also a lack of animation variety, your shot timing/player positioning seems to have no visual effect.

Also, how come Novak goes to the net during every single rally in the demo. It's so predictable and he doesn't play this way in real life. I haven't had any epic baseline rallies like I could in Top Spin or even Virtua Tennis. I hope the final game is greatly improved from this demo because I really want to like this game, but the gameplay isn't my cup of tea in its current form.

I had a complete opposite impression. I LOVED the gameplay with the Dual Shock. The strikes feel good, ball physics are sweet, volleys are lobs are effective, and the speed of the game is spot on and tense. Serving took some time to get used to, but I love how a Mac serve isn't a given.

The presentation was beautiful, best I've seen in a tennis game.

Can't wait for the retail version!!

Agreed. I have had a lot of fun after switching to the face buttons. I will pick this up day one. I think the balance between sim and arcade is great.

just tried the demo..

it DOES have a fun feel to it...

BUT, 2 things i noticed right off the bat that absolutely NEED to be fixed but probably won't:

1) serves, oftentimes i hit regular top spin serves right into the body of the opponent which will just zoom by resulting in a super easy ace

2) is there a way to make controls "manual" in any way? i mean the auto run will just let my character chase after the ball by himself without me being able to control anything but the actual SHOT? i feel restricted!!

Played the demo which is amazingly bad. Like some free flash game bad.

Have you watched/played tennis in real life? The animations in the demo are horrifying.

yup. I'm a big tennis nerd and play myself like 2 times a week. This is by far the worst tennis game I've played in the last 10 years. I mean yeah most tennis games are more like pong (like VT) but at least they're fun.

But well, it's just a demo after all..

i don't think it's THAT bad, sometimes you do get a great feel out of it when things gel... but i will say this game is SUPER unpolished and they really need to get their shit together.

Shame too as GST 1 on the Wii is actually pretty damn good

I do admit I might be a bit exaggerating but I was really surprised how awful it seems to be.

I didn't feel like the demo was all that bad. I, too, struggled a little bit with the assisted movement... is it truly assisting you? Sometimes I'll think it isn't while other times I'm like, OK, no way.

As usual with EA, the difficulty levels are so incredibly varying that it's ridiculous. I'll kill my opponent on Amateur and really struggle with Pro. I've been playing it enough that I tend to hold my own now against the Pro difficulty... but boy is it a leap.

Some observations:

1) Net play is weird. I feel like I can really put a volley past my opponent but I seem to lack any type of finishing volley move?

2) Nadal went to the net three straight times after the serve against me. Ummm...

I'm hoping this has competent 4 console online doubles play. It's really the only reason why I would buy. It being $49.99 with $10 credit @ Amazon certainly helps, though.

agreed, on pro Nadal KEEPS on going to the net... while it IS wimbledon, i doubt they actually take the surface into account and he will just always do that... so unrealistic :(

The match pace is very life like imo, while TS4 is slower. The game definitely feels arcade to me, and at that it's much better than VT4 and even VT3. I enjoyed the graphics and the commentary is great, I'm used to utter silence in every tennis game. I like that they provide more courts per tournament, I mean, in TS4 as soon as you're palying a GS you're doing it on center court, even if you're a nobody.

However TS4 beats it as a whole. Much better as a whole imo. 42 courts and tournaments is just great, and I can't see the career in GST beating TS4's. What's a career like with only 8 tournaments? If there is even one, I don't remember the menu options anymore.

I really prefer TS4's gameplay even if it's a little slower than real tennis. You feel like you have extreme control over your shots and everything matters there. I just prefer it more. It has way more pro players too.

I liked GST though. It just doesn't provide enough to me.

I find it annoying that after winning match point the players just head back to the baseline like it was just another point before the celebration cutscene kicks in. It's the little things that can make or break a game. Not that it matters as the game isn't fun anyway.

on a sidenote i just tried the TS4 demo again and this time it somehow gelled with me so i just ordered the game...

As a HUGE fan of TS1 i was extremely disappointed in 2 and 3 but this one seems to be a LOT better again hmmm

I miss arcade like tennis so I'm welcoming GST2 even though there are some big flaws in the animation etc. etc. I own Topspin 4, and just don't simply care for the clunky controls and unrealistically robotic gameplay at times.

I posted some videos of gameplay for GST2 on Superstar level below.
