Grand Theft Auto V ships 65m units

Don't worry, Rockstar doesn't care about my approval.

But we do.

The only misstep was GTA Online IMO. It could be great but you spend half the time dicking around in menus and lobbies.

and even then that's making a shit ton of money for them.

Insane numbers really. I really want to know how much it'll sell when it's all said and done.

Good lord. I mean...I love the game, so I think they've earned it. But damn that's a lot. According to Wikipedia it's #4 of all time, and that was 5 million units ago. Any chance it'll pass Minecraft? Looks like the game still has some serious legs.

It'll be difficult just due to the amount of platforms Minecraft is on plus how cheap it is in comparison to GTAV

Not just the greatest GTA game ever made, it's one of the greatest games ever made. 65 million is well deserved.
I don't think deserving has anything to do with it.

Man, I'll happily write an essay on why I think GTA V is vastly overrated and barely 'deserves' a tenth of those sales, but most people seem to like it, so I won't bother with that nonsense :)

But we do.

No room for even a modest dissenting opinion amongst your ranks? ;)

I was expecting mega numbers, but the more interesting figure would be how many millions of buyers they managed to get double sales from with the staggered gen release. The number of people with two copies probably cleans up on its own.

Crazy numbers.

Pretty funny to think that when RDR2 sells 20M and Rockstar/Take Two will be thinking "Why did RDR2 only sell 20M? what went wrong?"

Until the hackers got to it.

Meh, I haven't even touched the online in the PC version. The single-player + endless mods is enough for me. I use the PS4 version for online.

And people wonder why they' re in no hurry to reveal GTA6...

This thing won't stop selling.

I think that has more to do with these games becoming increasingly ambitions and taking a long time to create. We'll probably hear about it in the next year.

Until the hackers got to it.

I really only play the single player, but getting into the MP and doing heists with friends before all the hackers took over was some of the best fun I've had in a long time. I agree, hackers killed the fun of the online experience. I'm almost afraid to login and play the MP anymore. Single player has tons of replay value, anyway.

HOLY BENZ!!

Booted it up last night. No problems during the hour I played. Didn't really interact with other players. Got new guns and clothes then soloed some contact missions.

Will be playing this weekend with friends I think. Never trust the randoms.

At this point it might outsell the majority of entire platforms. 65 at the moment right? Would saying GTAV outsold the SNES and 3DS be right?

Also 5m in the last 3 months? Could it catch the PSP at ~80m? PS3 and 360 at touching 90m?

These numbers are obviously not that good if they couldn't convince Rockstar to make Single Player DLC.

Is this sarcasm? I don't see any relation from these sales numbers to the fact that all the DLC (which actually happened) focused on multiplayer content (which is being supported by players)

well deserved.... I'm up to about 730 hours or so in the SP alone. pretty much the must own free roam 'fuck around' game since... well, since the last GTA.

Until the hackers got to it.

It's crazy how prevalent hackers are.

If you're in a public session that's not a ghost town, one of the players in it is modding. I can't go one day in GTA Online without seeing hackers with God mode, geometry-made cars, or someone throwing millions of dollars to strangers.

Well deserved, it was the first GTA I have ever beaten.

Even now, I just load up the game and explore it every once in a while. It is fun considering I live in California, the real San Andreas ;)

What's insane is that it's still selling. We see how both PS4 and Xbox One SKUs are still doing in charts all around the world. And the game sold 1 million at launch on Steam back in early 2015, well after the original launch on PS3 and 360 and a few months after the launch on next gen. Batshit insane.

Absolutely insane. Timing was too perfect for this game. We won't probably see something like this again in the future. Would be interesting to know how many people double and tripple dipped (I've bought 2 copies for example). I bet the individual player numbers are around 15M-20M for this game.

uh... these numbers being good are probably more as to why they aren't making single player DLC...

the existing SP content is already moving the game well enough without the need for DLC. why release a standalone expansion game a la TBoGT and cannibalize GTA V when GTA V still charts every month ;p when instead you focus on GTAO and its huge microtransaction market.

it would be more likely to see a stand alone GTA V expansion exactly when V sales finally begin to teeter off.

You're not alone, brother. CrowbCat agrees.

Oh, we'll see it. RDR will do ridiculous numbers and GTA VI will break all kinds of records.

I didn't have that luxury unfortunately. Despite how astronomically well the game sold, just about everyone around me was playing Destiny or (recently) The Division. Attempting to make friends, no matter where I played via triple dipping, has always started and/or ended my MP sessions either getting hacked, shot on sight, or kicked from the lobby for actually wanting to do missions. I haven't even had the privilege to play the widely demanded Heists missions.

I'm honestly super close to quitting the game entirely, but just driving through Los Santos in SP has been pretty soothing. Wish there was DLC to have more to do because I've done everything twice over (only focused on story and some side quests on 360).

Nothing stops this train.

.....except when GTA6 comes out
.

Good for them, I rank GTA5 as one of my most favourite games on pc. I spent hours just driving around the phenomenally realised game world with all my 'tricked out' rides, hand crafted spotify playlists baling in my ears as I drive around Los Santos in the morning, midday, evening and night. One of the very few games that feel like you've taken a virtual holiday/road tip.....

Shit....time to play it again.

Don't take it so hard. There are people out there who don't like Citizen Kane and The Godfather, too. Stick to your guns.

It's weird, in the gaming community, the GTA love has seemed to die off a bit, even though it's clearly one of the most consistently great gaming franchises, and GTA 5 is an utter masterpiece.

It's good to see the sales reflect the quality of the game.

In terms of world building and detail they're so far ahead of everyone else it's not even funny. Generations ahead.

shit like this just keeps making me think that we won't even get gta6 till next gen.

why would rockstar wanna make a new gta game for current gen when the one that is currently available is still helping to hit new milestones?
