Grapes are highly poisonous to dogs

I work with animals at my job. Yesterday a dog I work with was being walked by the owner and he ate a bunch of grapes that someone had left behind on the ground in a park. He didn't make it. If you see grapes OR RAISINS on the ground, especially in area where dogs might be walking around, please pick them up.

Everyone knows about chocolate, but less ppl seem to know about this (including the owner, unfortunately). Even a handful can be deadly.

Well, I learned something new today. Had no idea.

This little dude loves broccoli, carrots, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, etc. Will eat it straight out of the garden.

Aww, so gorgeous! Sausage dogs are adorable.

Yeah, it seems like some, but not all dogs can die after eating grapes. It causes acute renal failure, buy why it causes the kidney to fail is still unknown. More studies obviously need to be done.

My old dog used to have grapes from time to time since none of us knew that they were bad for dogs. She seemed to handle them fine for almost a decade, but then the damage (as well as old age) finally started to catch up to her and she developed diabetes and other issues with her kidneys.

She still lived through that (cancer is what ultimately did her in ; _ ;) but we all knew that she could have had a much healthier and more active final few years were it not for the grapes.

I am surprised dogs don't naturally know they can't eat grapes or other natural things people listed in this thread.
I always felt like animals somehow know what is poisonous to them and dogs are supposedly good smellers.

I could understand chocolate because it is man made and cocoa beans probably grow where wolves aren't populated.

Once when I was a kid, we went out and left the dog and home for a couple of hours (small cocker spaniel). For some reason this dog, who was never usually a problem, decided to knock down all of the Easter baskets from a shelf (out of his reach) and eat all of the Easter candies and chocolate. There was quite a bit. To be honest, I'm not sure how he survived, but he greeted us at the door when we got home by immediately vomiting up the contents of the entire basket, foil wrappers and all, right at our feet as soon as the door opened. After that he actually seemed none the worse for wear, so maybe he got lucky and something made him vomit before too much could get digested.

Don't feed dogs onions or chocolate either.
I always assumed the chocolate thing was a bit hyperbole because growing up my friends dad would feed his big ass german shepard king sized butterfingers and shit all the time and that thing outlived 2 of my dogs.

Guess im surprised it never killed it.

I came home one day to one of my beagles eating a bag of grapes. He ate at least half a bag, I immediately called the vets induced vomiting and the vet checked him over. Didn't really have much of a reaction other than mild diarrhea. We lucked out on that one.

Beagles eat anything. Mine ate a battery and a lightbulb and nothing happened. He lived for 17 years.

It can depend on the weight of the dog and the chocolate really, its bad because it has fats and caffeine that are methylxanthines.

In significant symptoms can be vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, etc

Anyone else's dog go apeshit for sweets?

My shepherd will sit patiently in whatever spot I assign her when she begs but when I'm eating any kind of candy or ice cream she'll ignore all commands and climb into my mouth.

Obsessed with all things sugar. My good buddies pit lusts for chewy lemonheads specifically.

Another common food item that gets small dogs specifically is corn cobs. The cob is non digestible and will become lodged in a small dogs GI tract. You have to take them in immediately, it is very severe issue that requires immediate surgery.

That lesson cost me a couple thousand..

Hmm.

My old dog had chocolate every Saturday and my friends dog regularly drinks cider. (Like, the dregs at the end of bottle.)

Both healthy.

For chocolate, it has to do with the amount of Cocoa and the size of the dog. A big dog can have a little bit of low cocoa % milk chocolate without issue, with more gets to diarrhea, then it stats getting toxic.

My dog won't eat fruit so I don't have to worry about her eating grapes by accident. She goes nuts over people having milk and doritos though, she always try to get some of that.

What happens if a dog inhales crack cocaine?

Asking for a friend with a dog.

Should be ok, drugs aren't on the picture from page 1. If I can't get my future dog drunk then at least I know it's ok to buy it some edibles and get high together.

Also with alcohol being so deadly for dogs, it's kind of fucked up how Spuds Mackenzie starred in all those beer commercials in the 80s.

Is it just a non-general allergy that the dog had? Just because a man died from peanut allergy doesn't mean we would.

AFAIK cocoa to dog is about as toxic as caffeine to us.

Grape and raisin (dried grapes) toxicity is well documented in dogs. Although the exact substance that causes the toxic reaction is not yet known, dogs should not eat grapes and raisins because even small amounts can prove to be fatally toxic for a dog.

Dogs of any age, breed, or gender may be affected. Grapes and raisins are bad for dogs because one of the most serious complications of grape/raisin toxicity is acute (sudden) kidney failure with lack of urine production (anuria). However, kidney failure is not seen in all dogs after ingestion of grapes or raisins, and again, the reason why some dogs are affected excessively while others are not is still being studied.

It's not an allergy. Even a small amount can be fatal. Doesn't seem to affect all dogs. Exact cause is unknown.

I used to use them as treats. Until I found out about them. Never had any adverse effects on my dogs but they were only eating in small amounts.

Oh for the love of God if you love your sanity don't feed your dog Salmon cakes

no human mind is prepared for the sight and sound and smell of a dog that poops liquid fish and just won't stop.

man dogs cant eat shit

Actually, many dogs eat shit.

When you're not looking your dog is probably feasting on his or your neighbour's dog's feces. Then he comes and licks your face. Similar to cats rolling around in cat litter then coming to lay on you.
