Graphics! Once and for all! 56k uh...maybe?

graphics are good, but I think one thing that will shine through next gen will be animations and how they need to catch up with the graphics.

I think there is nothing wrong with animations. They wont get any better, at most there will be a variety of animations for each task.

End of the day animation comes secondary to response, motion and interactivity. Would you seriously want a character with awesome animation but it took ages to do each thing?

Its a balance thing. look at snake in MGS. Great animation but great control.

Good:

Bad:

I think Diminishing Returns is garbage. We're nowhere near that yet.

Personally, I want games to look more like some of the art in this book:

Go play some Kameo, Viva Pinata and Jetpac Refuelled and say that again ;)
Okay

It's not the graphics that get crap ;)

I do admit that Viva Piñata is a pretty good game. Kameo...not so much, like most of Rare's games. But I'm sure this discussion has been done to death on GAF in the past.

It all makes sense now. Some of you people have REALLY high standard for how a game looks, I still can't believe Twilight Princess got ripped on lol.

Seriously when people complained about bad graphics I thought they meant jaggies and no texture work, but some of the pics that are "bad' are just not...

Twilight Princess by today's standards is pretty drab looking, and both of those, textures and jaggies are one of the most apparent reasons why it is bad.

You should see their standards for women. I fear their line may die out with this generation. :(

Both art and technology wise, TP did nothing for me.

Best of Xbox/GC is "good enough" (meaning "great") basically, and my suspicions that the ones disagreeing with this are a small part of the hardcore seems to be accurate. (Not that it makes their opinions less valid.)

I think God of War 2 looks comparable to the best of Xbox/GC (although the screen tearing does suck) so I think you can throw PS2 up there too.

Here is a graphics related question- do third party cables differ in quality? I have the Nyko brand HDMI cables for PS3 and I'm worried they may be inferior.

It's amazing to me how Rare gets so much crap around here, yet their games are one of the best ones to use when showing lush, colorful and vibrant images and game graphics.

And if you think about it, then their best looking game, Kameo, wasn't even started on the 360. It started on the GAMECUBE! And porter and re-ported and re-ported.

I can only imagine what Banjo will look like.

We're sure that the Xbox will be very powerful indeed.

Hot damn, what game is that?! Looks gorgeous!

Edit:
Oh, it's called Theseis and it's a PC game.

http://www.theseisgame.com/

Site is looking good and the music sounds great. Very interesting.

yeap! I think its gonna be a great game.

its developed here in Greece, involves adventuring and (proper) greek mythology, and the graphics are nice because the creator is a 3d-graphics teacher in the university. (so he knows how to model cute butts :D )

after pc also 360 version will come out, and maybe sometime later ps3 too.

I agree about the whole diminishing retuns thing, but feel Nintendo was just one generation too early. Which sucks because 360/PS3 level power is just enough to have a Zelda with a world even bigger than WW, without having to worry about texutres or jaggies.

Nintendo fans' standards only lowered due to the hardware in the Wii. The last three gens, Nintendo's consoles outperformed the market leader (or nearest competition int he SNES/Genesis era) competition graphically, and N fans wouldn't shut up about it.

Xbox fans last gen loved to trumpet their superior hardware, and now the 360 is good enough.

Sony fans last gen talked about game variety and gameplay, and this time it's their turn to talk about having the most powerful system.

We haven't "really" seen what the Wii can do at it's best. So who knows, maybe you'll get that wish? :)

I dunno. Even at the theoretical 3X GC power (that some allege), it still may not be enough for what I'm envisioning. Besides which, EAD never really FULLY utilize their hardware (with the possible exception of YI. Maybe). I wanna see HDR(real, not faked), high res. textures, insane water effects, hundredds of enemies on screen, the works.

Edit: Eh, I guess I wouldn't care too much about the hundreds of enemies.

I don't understand how someone can look at something like Ninja Gaiden last gen and something like Crysis now, and say diminishing returns. That's just batty.

Yep I agree on Kameo. Its a beautiful game and to this day I truly cannot understand how some "professional" reviewers could look at that game as mediocre in anyway. Glad I didn't take there word for it. A beautiful game I hope gets a proper sequel.

Another thing is I don't think many people really know graphics. They think shiny is all that matters but over look great art and direction which really gives the game life. Sure Gears of War has better graphics that Half Life 2 but IMO HL2 beats it out when it comes to art thus looks better IMO. Weird I know but hey. I still think Grim Fandango looks better than a lot of games.:lol

It's quite embarassing when you can say your launch game for the previous generation console destroys everything released so far on a superior system.

It's not a troll. I think Factor 5's games look brilliant, and Wii games should look like them at the MINIMUM.

They do look brilliant. But most of the games released thus far on the Wii are ports from last gen Wii-ified, except maybe SSX Blur and Sonic, which look pretty damn good. Rogue Squadron was the first ground-up Gamecube game. I mean, it's Factor 5, what do you expect? Graphics are what they do.

But embaressing? There haven't really been many ground-up Wii games released yet, and Factor 5 is really an amazing comapny when it comes to graphics. So not really.

It's a shame, but Nintendo's at fault along with 3rd parties. They promoted the system in a way that people don't care about the graphics, just the Wiimote. It's worked tremendously well, but graphic whores like me will be very disappointed :(

You'll see some gems though. Mario Galaxy looks incredible, and it wouldn't look out of place on the 360 (apart from the resolution).

Its also embarrassing that it looks better than Lair.

Only thing that bothers me about Mario Galaxy is the aliasing it has. But I suspect SD tvs probably help with that a little.

Rogue Squadron 2 and 3 really are visually amazing. Current gen quality.

Also, for those pining for ZOE2 shots:

Rogue Squadrun really had me thinking a while back. If they could THAT on the cube, what could they do on the Wii?

Hopefully F5 will come around, and do some titles on Wii.

Well, my point was kinda blaming the third parties, really.

:lol Don't turn Neogaf into the Nsider Forums...

You would be surprised at how many members on Nsider are actually decent when it comes to discussion like this. The main problem comes (as with most members on some forums mainly from cynics) when they assume the graphics argument as being so one sided. (i.e. LOL Graphics don't matter? So you would rather Wii have Atari 2600 visuals ROFLMBOLOLWAGGLEWINKYDRINKYSREDEMPTIONSANCARNE)

And so on, and so forth.

Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast definitely raised the bar. The graphics are still respectable even today.

That's Soul Calibur 2 actually.

Speaking of which, Soul Calibur 3 looks ridiculous. Definitely one of the best looking PS2 games out there.

Simple textures and models, but with it's awesome art direction and character designer this becomes a beautiful game.

I like the soft painted look the whole game had. Playing the game is like seeing behind the scenes of a fairytale where all the real shit happens.

It seems K.I.S.S. works a lot when applied to video game graphics.

I'm going to stay away from the more obvious choices, and go for games that, I feel, were overlooked in this area.

Good:

Kameo

Kameo was one of those games that, imo, suffered one of the great injustices early on in the advent of 'next gen'. Oft-overlooked because people didn't approve of the art. Truth be told, if you can accept its highly stylized look, you'll find a game that is brimming character, and filled with varied, atmospheric locales. I lost count of how many times while playing the game I just had to stop and look around--beyond anything else released for the 360 up to that point, Kameo showed off a glimpse at how vibrant a world the machine could produce. But, beyond that, the game was also FUN. No, it wasn't terribly innovative, but that meant little in light of the fact that all of the elements (visual among them) meshed together SO well. I hope to God we see a sequel this generation.
I agree. This game was awesome, and was my most played launch game, next to Condemned. It was also a technical marvel, especially when you get to the 500+ guys main battles between worlds. Definitely under-rated.

Yeah, that's where these threads start to degenerate, with statements like that. Rogue Leader/Rebel Strike are quite possibly the greatest screenshot war games ever, but when actually playing them, I never think "Whoa, these are the greatest looking games ever", I think stuff like Conker, RE4, Ninja Gaiden, God of War 2 and stuff look better.
