mainstream audience doesn't get it
Honestly there isn’t much here to really “get” I don’t think. You could certainly make cases for Suda’s and Grasshopper’s earlier work such as Killer7, FSR and NMH to a degree as being ignored by the general gaming populace for being too out there despite being good in their own right, but Killer is Dead legitimately feels like a mediocre effort that doesn’t deserve the attention that it will almost certainly not receive.
Having now just finished my playthrough on Very Hard, I think gameplay whilst one of the studios most proficient, is certainly on the shallow side of things, devoid of any form of variety or freedom and lacking any sort of true challenge, dedicated challenge missions included. Plus the story is neither interesting in the least nor cleverly written or delivered, something that used to be a given with a Suda related game and something we haven’t really had the pleasure of experiencing since the original NMH on Wii. Visuals too seemed more pleasing in still shots as opposed to when in motion (copious amounts of screen tearing didn’t help too), so even what I consider the games greatest strength isn’t anything to write home about.
The whole game came off feeling quite slapdash, hastily constructed with short linier levels, weak combat, paper thin narrative and an uninteresting cast of characters.
As a Suda51/ GHS fan I no longer think I’ll be there day 1 for thier next project tbh, not until they can deliver something worthy of the asking price, which the studios recent output has failed to provide.
Oh and no amount of faux surrealism dream scenes and slow walking will go towards adding any degree of substantial depth to your game Suda & co. Just like including as many double d sized woman will make it more appealing to anyone but teenagers with raging boners.
srry for the mini rant. I was just a tad disappointed is all.
