Gravity - Awesome Watch (RT 100%) - best space movie ever? [now 98%]

For some reason I just can't get hyped for this. If they cast two unknowns, I'd be all over it, but Clooney and Bullock? Just can't get hyped.
 
I'm extremely excited, this will be one of the few movies I actually go to a theater for this year.

I don't like Sandra Bullock as an actress, but she stars in one of my all time favorite movies ever (Demolition Man).

Quite the conundrum.

I don't know if Bullock still has a decent personal fan base from her rom-com (and romantic interest in 90s action movie) phase but it's usually not a fan base strong enough to counteract the perception of ageing women in that Hollywood genre - just ask the Meg Ryans of the world. However, she's been pretty smart with her role choices breaking into straight drama (and comedy) recently. Studio execs crave actors with a recognizable name at the foreign box office, and from what I can see, she's manoeuvred herself into a great position of leverage.
 
Watching some of the trailers, the EVA scenes all look so... fast. Maybe it's just decades of watching EVAs where the people are lumbering and slow, but it looks wrong for some reason.
 
My most hyped / anticipated movie since The Tree of Life, and then some.

I was shocked when I got out of the theater after Children of Men. I except no less with Gravity.
 
I think I've seen a couple trailers for this movie and each time I just wonder how this is going to take up a full run time.
 
After a summer were original sci-fi fare struggled at the box office I really want this film to be a big hit not just financially but during awards season as well.

Also it's really starting to interest the mainstream crowd too. My Dad can't wait to see this after checking out the trailer in the cinema.

Cuaron directed the pilot so I'm definitely onboard for that.

As for the rest of the series?

Im sooo ezcited to see Gravity and really do anticipate a masterpiece, but there should be a minimum moratorium of like 2 years before we can look back and call something the best ___ ever.

Basically this. I will watch it because of the reviews (and because the guy made Children of Men), but even though I like space stuff, the concept sounds so uninteresting to me.
Like with 127 Hours, even if I wouldn't know the outcome, it's that one guy who placed himself in that situation and he either dies or lives, and we watch him doing stuff and remembering stuff in the same place for 90 minutes. Will this be a similar series of flashbacks/characterization or will they really just extend that space scene from FFVIII for a full movie?

I guess I like my stakes higher. Or if it's such a concept, I need some twists&mysteries. I dunno.
On the other hand, I liked Open Water. So let's see.

I dunno, there's lots of things they could do besides just showing them floating, like the blastoff, or showing people at base.

But somehow I get the feeling they'll go all out "artsy" and show Clooney and Bullock floating the entire time. I think in the trailer we got voices from base in their ears? But yeah, I can't see any other actors being in this movie tbh.

Finally got my (digital) hands on the script yesterday and yeah, kinda average from a narrative and character point of view, but this is definitely an "auteur" film if ever there was one and if Cuaron can impart the sheer existential terror these characters go through it should be a pretty great experience.

Looking forward to seeing it.

More impressions below. Not really spoilers but I'll tag them just in case.

My only serious gripe is that in terms of structure, it seemed kinda one note. It's just stuff going wrong to the Nth degree; and because it's all so rapid fire it at times gives off a "Three Stooges in Space" vibe. Lots of potential for Yakety Sax remixes.

In that released clip "Detached" or whatever it was called, you know how they had that shot of Sandra Bullock spinning around on the robotic arm, and every time she comes past the camera she yells "WAAAAHHHHH!!" (pretty unconvincingly IMO). Tonally there's a lot of that in different-ish ways.

Completely uninteresting trailer. I have no idea what people saw in that.

But Ill give it a shot when it releases I guess. If I have time.
 
A master class in fluid camerawork, bold, unfussy imagery and special effects that put most recent Hollywood blockbusters to shame.

After the last two films i saw in the cinema (elysium/wolverine), this is needed. Seriously, following the action in most films these days is impossible, its just a blur.
 
No idea until I see it. Certainly looks like it might be the best "feels like your in space" movie ever judging by trailers but I doubt it's going to trouble 2001 in the overall genre stakes.

Still I do like a tight, short film with a simple premise and the setting is spectacular. I'm struggling a bit with Bullock in the trailers though for some reason (as are others it seems).

The "some reason" is that there is absolutely nothing about Bullock's acting that could convince me she's had either (a) a rigorous science education or (b) serious endurance training.
