But seriously, a lot of people talk about Murray in Lost in Translation. Don't think that one fits the thread at all. He's referenced pretty frequently when discussing the great performances of the 00s, as well as when talking about the biggest Oscar snubs.

Or maybe it's just because I talk about that performance a lot. :)

i guess it depends on what circle you run in, or that you're referring to. i think around here it gets talked about twenty-fo seven.

I thought Denzel was great in Training Day but I didn't get the huge hubbub about it being such an uncommon performance from him. I was like, nobody saw He Got Game? Denzel wasn't quite Alonzo, but he was still a hardass in that one.

I thought Ethan Hawk was the better performer in Training Day, and I usually don't like him. Pretty awesome movie to boot.

Thought of another one.....Matthew Broderick in Election. Did that movie fly under everyone's radar or something? I never hear anyone talk about it.

Brad Dourif - Exorcist 3 (and everything else he's done)

Adam Sandler (Punch Drunk Love)

Incredibly powerful and nuanced performance which is incredibly rewatchable.

Bob De Niro
King-of-Comedy-Deniro_l.jpg

An often forgotten Scorsese/De Niro collaboration which he delivers one of his most powerful and darkly insane performances.

Paul Bettany (Gangster No 1)

Really nice character acting piece.

Speaking of Paul Bettany, I thought his performance in Master & Commander was highly under-appreciated.

He played the doc.

Admittedly on a level lower then those that have already been mentioned:
Zach Braff and Natalie Portman in Garden State.

Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Christian Bale in The Machinist
Guy Pearce in Memento
Paul Bettany in A Knight's Tale
Samuel L Jackson and Christina Ricci in Black Snake Moan
Ray Park in every movie he's been in
^^^
This... THIS GOD DAMMIT. F'ing THIS!!! He played that roll so well.

As for my entries:

in Devil Wears Prada.

in Reign over me. I know people gave him shit for trying to pull a "Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine" type move but I dont think he gets enough credit for this roll.

oh and:

and paul bettany's reward for his hard work is a starring role

. . . in LEGION

:(
He was also in Master And Commander:Far Side of the World as the doctor...Another excellent performance.

A movie allot of people summed up as another Bond attempt, when it turned out to be one of the better movies of 2005 with a fantastic performance by Brosnan.

Casey Affleck in general deserves more attention. He was great in Gone Baby Gone too.

That movie was ridiculously good, Ed harris deserved a nod as did Affleck, and what a start for Ben at director.

The entire movie is highly under-appreciated. One of the best released in the last 10 years.

As much as I agree with the person that said Brandon Lee in The Crow since its my favorite movie of all time, my boyfriend just got me thinking about this one since we couldn't stop quoting it after I told him about this topic.

The movie Tombstone

Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday

Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo

I'm sorry, but when you get these two together... they just took over the whole movie.

Val used to be a solid actor... I don't know what happened along the way.

Bettany would be my pick for Quick Ben if—oh, heavens, if—they were to make a Malazan film.

Rusty could probably be Whiskeyjack, too.
