Greatest Video Game Music on Amazon for $2.99

Sigh. People judging books by their cover. Their loss.
The content here seems pretty bad too. These don't seem to be particularly good versions of the songs.

I bought it since it was only 2 dollars. For the price it wasn't too bad.

As already mentioned, the title and art of the album is ridiculous. In terms of the content, it's okay. This is essentially Video Games Live including previously made arrangements (Zelda, World of Warcraft, Mario, MGS2, etc.) and some of the newer games. The arrangements themselves are for the most part fairly standard, or minimally changed from the source material of the more elaborate and orchestrated ones.

As a big fan of VG music I wish that VG music and concerts could just be a little more... ambitious. Yeah we have VGL, Play! and Distant Worlds but VG music concerts have been the same with the SAME arrangements for the past decade or so. To me, the best VG concerts recently have been the Symphonic Fantasies/Odyssey/Legends concerts in Cologne, because they will challenge the source material and even try to bring it into the classical fold (a 3 movement concerto based on Final Fantasy that's awesome? Yes please.) I would love to see American concerts try to do this, especially with all the great music in American made games.

The Angry Birds, Battlefield 2 and Halo 3 themes are incredible. I haven't played any of those three games (and don't plan to), but the arrangements here are spectacular.

lol@nerdrage. Sometimes the gaming community is its own worst enemy.

London Philharmonic + Mario, Zelda, FF, MSG, Halo, etc + 2 bucks? That'll do.

Yeah, it's pretty funny, but the Angry Birds theme is a quality orchestration. Has that playfulness you hear in Grant Kirkhope's music.
That's the first thing I thought of as well.

This is a nice album!

Hmm. Same Mario & Zelda tracks we've heard for ages, along with the "standard" Gusty Galaxy one.

Tetris, though -- that one sounds like a new interpretation. I assume it isn't, but it -sounds- new.

Can an album really be called the "Greatest Video Game Music" if it doesn't contain any songs from:

Chrono Cross
VVVVVV
Thunderforce III and IV
Castlevania
Megaman
Classic Sonic Games
Streets of Rage 2
Donkey Kong Country

...and other timeless soundtracks?

Damn, I preordered this in CD form and it just shipped yesterday. I would have preferred it in digital form anyway since I'm in Japan and it shipped to the states. Also really wish I could get the Play for Japan digital album that Amazon is supposed to have, but doesn't for some reason. One of my friends got it from the Japanese iTunes and it sounds fantastic.

Downloaded it for $1.99. Liking it! Not sure how they came up with this track list but for the price I can not complain. Good stuff!

No album could be ever complete if that was the case. So, they just put some timeless songs, and some new popular ones. That's it. It's not that complicated to get.

Is there any way to buy this from outside the US?

Alright, so much whining in this thread. I need to point something out.

The London Phil does these "greatest" CDs all the time.

Notice the guard playing the cello in the same position. There are dozens of them. I think I've seen "50 Greatest Spooky Classical Tunes" and random stuff like that. So don't read into the title too much, they're coming from a totally different perspective than you guys. This album is just one of many to them. It doesn't excuse what is a goofy title, but it's simply another project for them.

Also, it's not like anyone here can definitively say what the "greatest" music of all time is anyway. It may or may not be what's on that album, but it's fucking $2 for professionally recorded VGM.

Hmmm apparently pre-ordering MW3 gets you $2 off this album... so I will wait for that and buy for $1... wonder if that code above will also stack, making this free.
I can confirm this works.
