Not funny.

52 people were burned alive, the country is a fucking mess, and I'm seriously pissed off. People were burned alive in their cars because our fucking goverment didn't warn them soon enough to evacuate.

Don't you think there's probably a better place for you to be right now?

He's probably in a safe location, and there's little any man can be expected to do to combat a raging forest fire without proper equipment (which, it seems, Greece lacks).

But if there's any chance that you'd be in danger, I would get the hell out yeah.

I live in northern Greece far away from the fires. Anyway there's no hope for these fires, the goverment's responce isn't nearly enough. Like I said EU has financed us again and again and the fucking crooks kept everything for themselves. I'm done fighting. I've volunteered, I've demonstrated, I've been beaten by the police, I've donated, I've participated in certain political parties trying to wake people up and still the country goes from bad to worse.

It's fucking depressing man, at least in USA there is some hope from people like Obama imho. In this country there's nothing, it's one of the most crazy fun countries in the world (people who have vacationed here know what I'm talking about) but when it comes to serious matters we're a fucking disaster. I'm giving up, if I find the chance I'll leave this country for good this time.

Jesus, given the time of the year and the type of forestry in Greece these fires aren't going to be able to be contained easily. In particular the Peloponnese area where there's a lot of open land and dry shrubs.

sp0rsk, one person trying to put out a fire in these conditions is going to do nothing except indanger themselves. They're going to need a ton of helicopters to dump water on these fires so thankfully at least the area is near the sea.

I didn't actually think he'd be doing it by himself hahahaha

What could a group of people reasonably do in this situation? It's not like they can hook up a bunch of garden hoses and fire away (ok, bad pun). All you can really do is run and pray the fire will go out naturally or that the government can contain it.

Fortified, I'm really sorry to hear about this disaster and what you've said about your country. Luckily, you are safe enough to talk about it.

He could find some kind of authorities and offer volunteer assistance.

why would arsonists burn down their own country, that's fucking stupid

At least with the LA riots they had a reason or purpose for destroying their own homes, i don't see any here

There are times and places for jokes, and it can be hard to judge that on GAF, but I think most people would agree that this isn't one of those times.

Sorry, this is a time for a joke, jokes help us get around the horrors of everyday life.

tell us how you really feel.

Do you think that's funny? It wasn't even funny in 1998 when it was a Friends joke, never mind in this context. A guy watching half his country burn is miserable over a charred mother who died trying to protect her children and you come with lame sacasm? What the fuck is wrong with you?

What I don't understand is how do cars catch on fire? What are the circumstances leading to that kind of event (I don't have a bit of doubt it occurred, I just don't know how that happens)?

The flammable gas and oil inside of them.

What a lame rationalization. You're not there dealing with the horror. I'm sure the people that actually are don't find it very amusing.

Yeah, see, your theory doesn't seem to be working for fortified_concept, unless you're just talking about yourself - in which case you're just trying to help yourself get around your own undoubtedly terrible "horrors of everyday life" by laughing in a thread about people who live far away being burned alive.

Here's a crappy satellite photo of Greece and the fires.

There's a lot of history in Greece and it's a shame that shit like this happens. Hope the best for the people there.

You pretty much said what I wanted to say to the letter. I hope too much isn't lost, and I hope Greece gets its shit together. If it's true that arsonists are behind such a large scale fire...fuck...I don't even know what to say about that.

This is really, really depressing. My condolences to Fortified concept and all the fellow Greek gaffers. It is shame, and I wish you guys could somehow rebuild your country, both physically and politically.

Also, it baffles me how now media here in Spain is priorizing the Real Madrid vs Athletic match over the oldest European nation being burned into the ground. For fuck's shake, journalism is dead and buried here, period.

Also, how it comes that our goverment isn't helping the hell out of Greece? I know that the EU has already sent more help (thanks God), but Spain sends lots of firefighter brigades and the like when a disaster hits a South American country, so why can't we do the same for our Mediterranean friends? :-(

Dont think it's all arson, isn't it like 40 degrees (C) in the Med right now?

Yeah, most fires seem to be of natural cause. But some arsonists are obviously using the situation to create even bigger havoc - otherwise these tiny spots in which fires started would be unexplainable. Most probably these are deliberate acts, as a lot of the fires started at night. We've seen the same thing happen in Italy some weeks ago.

Ancient Olympia is burning right now. It was the most beautiful historical site I've ever visited in my life. Nature in combination with the ruins of the ancient city made an amazing spectacle.

The majority of the fires are result of arson since they started at night when the firefighter planes can't fly. The greek law is sloppy regarding land which results to people with connections in high places to be able to steal the land after the fires. For example after the "Penteli" arsons (in 2004 iirc) the Penteli Casino took 60 km of burned land to expand the fucking Casino. And after years of constant fires throughout Greece our disgustingly corrupted poticians have done nothing to change these laws and make the forests goverment property that noone is allowed to trespass even after the fires.

That sucks so much. I hate when beautiful landscapes like that get destroyed and I haven't had the chance to visit them yet. Are the firefighters making any advance? Or is it unlikely they'll be able to save anything? >_< Stupid people, going this far just to be able to get more rich... I'm crossing my fingers the responsible will get caught or at least the fire fighters get in control of the situation soon...

That's one depressing picture, it really shows what humanity's doing right now. Damn...

This is sad, especially because it is high up on my list of places that I absolutely need to go to...

Oh well on the bright side stuff can always be rebuilt and grow back, although it isn't the same...

:(

I have a really bad feeling that the worst is not over yet :(
Nearby countries need to send help ASAP

They already have- 12 countries so far. And not only nearby countries, one of our military choppers (5 remaining) with water-basket is already on the way to the Greece.

shit.

as a greek-american, i'm really pissed off and scared right now. the current incompetent govt. needs to be pushed out. i don't know how it can happen, maybe the EU can do something. but after this, greece should stand up and fight for change.

I am Greek. Greece is under f*cking attack!!!!!
Many wonder what is the purpose of the arsonists.....Who's doing this to our country and why?....

The fires are so many, the strength of wind does not help the firefighters, the fires are totally uncontrolled......

The death toll is 62 as we speak: Most of them were incinerated by the flames when the were trying to escape or while they were fighting with the flames in order to save their possessions (houses, fields, crops, etc...).
One tragic figure is the incinerated corpses of a mother clutching her children..... RIP to those......

German news outlets are doing a great job reporting about this. They are keeping us updated on everything.

btw.

Ancient Olympia isn't burning according to the latest reports, they apparently managed to hold the fire off until now.
