GT Bonus Round: Xbox 720, PS4

Nintedo is teh doomed ...... :lol

it kind of gripes me whenever nextgen mentioned someone brings up this pie in the sky of idea of never having to buy another console.. or retail going away...

that stuff will happen... but not anytime soon
its going to be a natural progression, current gen will probably last about 6ish years... then maybe next gen will be 7-8.. etc...

Seems weird for Patcher to say there may never be another console, but the guy does have a point about the casual consumers not wanting to spend the money(I think my mom has purchased one dvd player in the last 10 years). From Sony and MS's prespective how can they continue to release new hardware at the cost of losing money each year? It would sadden me if companies don't strive to push tech though :(

He makes a point.
Three generations from now, I could believe that the basic hardware foundation wouldn't change much over the course of 9 or 10 years. And since this bonus round is actually titled "the future of gaming" not next generation I guess it isn't really all that out there.

Holy shit, is that Pachter guy clueless... No new boxes needed until we go away from 2D display paradigm? Is this guy for real? You can tell he has absolutely 0 experience and clue regarding game development.

Either he's totally bought into the PS3 hype, or just got into gaming a few years ago. WTF.

He's basically saying that he can't see with his little brain how in the world new consoles would fit into the business model he thinks he has narrowed all he can of the current console business, so it won't happen.

He has to realize that the gaming has always driven consumer computing platform power and visa versa. Intel, IBM, AMD, nVidia and others won't stop their relentless progress just because overpayed market guessers like him can't think of a scenario for their new processors in the marketplace. They will continue their pace, and as long as there are new power processor coming into existence, game makers will find use of that power.

I hate that they break down the episodes into small useless chunks. But Patcher might have a point, all that sony or ms needs to do is release a wii type remote bundled with some party games for dirt cheap and they have wii type play.

But microsoft needs to release something with larger than dvd storage so they will be slightly held back.

I think the term "hardcore gamer" is fuckin' bullshit, and I can't be arsed listening to any discussion that uses the term.

My future is one where everyone is a lot more connected as an online community, whether it be an extension of Home so a user can look at every persons' apartment and pick up on other users ideas of wallpaper, furniture; or in an sandbox game you can step in and see how that player is manipulating the World, playing the game, share tips and ideas; gaming is a social and enjoyable experience, in my social circles you can end up chatting to a Father who play Links golf or a girl who , this is why I hate the term "hardcore" gamer, there's people I know who play football manager like a beast, the father I mentioned is obssessed with Links he talks to everyone about it, are these "hardcore gamers"? Are they fuckm, but they are people who would appreciate a community within the gaming world, an outlet like facebook, to share a common interest.

This is how I see the future, a huge network of people sharing a similar interest, maybe that's what they meant with "facebook" or were they just talking interface?

Also anyone who is in the business and likes the way I think, wants to hear more, give me a job!

STOP TALKING ABOUT NEXT GEN!

TALK ABOUT THE GAMES THAT ARE COMING OUT NOW!

This generation is barely 2 years old and people already want the next thing, enjoy what you have now and play your fucking games instead of arguing on the internet which machine is the best.

It's way to early.

DVD spec was done with consortium. Thus, they all can play 99% of present and future DVDs. There's no need to buy new players unless you want minor differences. Closest thing we have in consoles was 3DO idea and that worked out very well. We just started HD gaming this gen and there's much more room for advancement / new hardware.

There's going to be X720 / PS3. Microsoft made $399 price point acceptable. Guessing, they are going to start at that price point with best possible tech hardware and waggle in that package. There's going to be a disc drive, probably still BR. Digital distribution is still not there yet. We need at least one generation of ability to still get hard copy and download for people to get use to that option. X360 and PS3 haven't given that option yet accept for few games.

I'm still waiting for this gen to start.

to who? I've had my 360 for almost 3 years now. I'll be ready and waiting in 2010, ram is dirt cheap bring along 8 gb of ddr2 with 8x blu-ray (no need to install) and I'll give them my $500.00:D

Well, that's you.

Jen-Hsun Huang of Nvidia proclaims the display is the computer. The Wii has proved this false.

The future is the opaque game channel and ray tracing.

The opaque channel meaning there will be no specific platform a game is targeted for. It will scale across various devices, just like a video program can be played on a large screen TV or a the small display of a cell phone.

Ray tracing based methods will dominate even though it doesn't render graphics as well as a rasterizer. The advantage of ray tracing is it greatly simplifies video game content creation. Larrabee from Intel is going to help push this future by bridging the gap between raster and ray tracing graphics.

It simply won't matter the lastest Nvidia GPU will be able to raster graphics in orders of magnitude greater pixel fidelity compared to Intels Larrabee that will churn out pixels with some hybrid ray tracing method. The Larrabee architecture will eventually spread into all devices.

The future companies that will have a position of leadership are the ones that will helping to paint the electronic world opaque.

Guess I'm gonna be enjoying my PS3 for MORE than 10 years Sony! Because guess what, there won't be a PS4!

pachter is probably making a lot of money this generation so he wants it to stay for ever :D

2009 believe!!

Hey, Sony, this guy is totally who you want to avoid. Screw MS and go back to your roots. Your roots are somewhere around $250. Aim for $250 launch and you got me back. Fuck this guy, he's feeding you bad dope. You don't even like heroin. It's too expensive. Come down to earth and I'll give you some cheap weed. And milk and cookies. Doesn't that sound great? Milk and cookies for everyone if you just come down. Don't fuck with this guy, no mo. He's bad. He'll have you on the street suckin dicks in 5 years. Don't do it. Just say no.

this makes a 1 console future sound more and more real. If we got to a point where Sony or MS wouldn't release and new console whats the point of having different platforms?

At this point, it's Sony that should be thinking about things quicker. But now that they've started to sell some units, it would be dumb for any of the 3 to go next gen. This gen needs to last another 3 years, at least.

2010 will probably be when i buy a ps3, 2012 for a wii i guess

MS is almost at $199 that will be a temporary sales-bump just like previous pricedrops. I can't see the system going strong for another 3 years, 2 at best considering the advances that will be made in terms of technology. If they still intend to play the "best looking", "more powerfull, "launch early" card than they have to release the 720 around Q4 2010. Xbox 360 support for another 1.5 years with COD7 and other third party games.

Wouldn't be too bothered if Pachter wasn't part of it. He's quite a bit of fun, I find. He's a shit analyst though. He should stick to his share price predictions - or maybe he shouldn't because his other predictions are entertaining.

I agree, way too early talking about next-gen, let's actually max out this gen before going on to the PS4/720.

yeah, I think the panel is drinking some strange cool aid to come up with that, hopefully they will sound a little more sane in the next episodes

Well, at least they refrained from predicting what Nintendo's next console would be, and they didn't say Nintendo would totally release its next system before everyone else.

Maybe they know something most of us don't. Though I don't see why there won't be a next console. The launch and even reveal of a new console is a huge marketing opportunity.

Yep. Me too. My current gen started back in November 2005. Coming up to a 3 year point soon.

What goes for MS also goes for Sony. BR can't magically extend the capability of RSX or Cell, or the RAM capacity. PS3' sales are being afloat currently because of it's BR player role, but when BR players go sub $200 soon, it's in the same boat as 360.

MS no longer has to be the first out the block since 360 is THE platform of choice, at least in the US. That role has probably been passed on to Sony. But 2010 is too early for either. Probably late 2011 or 2012 is the more probably guess.

Your math is fucked up. And the funny thing it isn't that hard.

September 2008 - November 2005

It's been 3 years now. 3 long years of next gen gaming goodness.

if nintendo eventually puts their new fortune into a superior hd console, the wii will be worth it.

I doubt it for a few reasons:
1) They aren't even putting their billions into expanding software development
2) The route they found is too profitable to ignore. While of course the next console would be HD, there is little reason for it to be more powerful than either the PS3 or 360.

I think a 2011 launch would be best. 6 full years of next gen. With the speed graphics technology is improving, and key hardware components such as data storage and BluRay drives coming down big time, it seems like an ideal time.
