GT Countdown: Top 10 First-Person Shooters

It's sad to say but there aren't THAT many good shooters, even counting back to the nineties. An oversaturated genre lacking high quality games.

That said, the list isn't horrible. I'd definitly replace Halo 3 with CE.

Still.. I feel my question hasn't been answered. Not to sound like a dick, but when I'm composing a list of the best 100 meter sprinters, I'm not going to add a Paralympics sprint champ cause he's amazing in his Paralympics realm.

It had stealth, a primitive cover mechanic, and body specific damage (head shots!) and sniper rifles. I'm not saying it should be on that list but the only thing on the PC that that was critically comparable at the time was Half Life. Those two games set the course of FPSs for years. Goldeneye may have aged horribly but it was packed full of original ideas.

Halo 3 instead of Halo 1? No.

EDIT: also Doom is not high enough, Call of Duty and Goldeneye are too high. Goldeneye shouldn't be no.1, as great and influential as it was it has not aged in the same way many of the others have.

I hope I'm not the only one who thinks Half-Life is a much better game than Half-Life 2. It has aged a lot better than 2 as well.

That list is bonkers. I mean, I like GE007 and it even introduced a bunch of cool stuff to the genre I wish caught on. But come on. I wouldn't put it in the top 100.

I still don't get the extreme love for Goldeneye.
Did it do anything exceptional PC Games didn't do at the time? Except for 4 Player splitscreen?

To be honest, the game played well even compared to many PC FPS games. So it's not that. But man, the idea that it is the best FPS ever. I just don't get it.

I guess its being torn between the first people that ran the 100 meter sprint the best they could back in teh black and white TV days, versus some super drugged up dude that did it in half the time. Looking back at those sports starts of our youth does not make them any worse than someone who won the Gold during the 2012 Olympics.

Therefore, GoldenEye Wins!

I don't think you had a game like that back then where you can't just run and shoot at everything to win. You had objectives, you had to be careful not to shoot civilians or Natalya, you could try to be stealthy if you wanted, additional objectives were there for harder modes, the story mode was interesting. Not the kind of thing Quake or Doom could do.

I think the thing that made it stand apart from something else I'd play at the time like Quake was the reactionary animations on enemies depending on the location you'd shoot them, headshots were present at all, and it had objective-based level design that would alter the way you approached levels based on difficulty level a year before Thief came out. It was a game that also inspired a lot of memorization and speed running due to the level structure and cheat unlocking method. Speaking of, the cheats were super fun to just screw around with.

Anyway possible to replay it without a N64? Heard of a XBLA HD-Remake but assume it was cancelled.

Goldeneye has aged terribly and kind of plays like ass today, it really shouldn't be number 1. Or anywhere on the list.

#1 is the right choice, but MAN is it going to piss people off. You could definitely make an argument for Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Counterstrike, and Halo.

guys srsly halo3 is the best halo

So wait..that list is about the best FPS RIGHT NOW or of all time?

Yeah still don't really get if it's a best multiplayer shooter list or not. Considering most of the games don't even have a singleplayer campaign in that list.

I played the fuck out of Goldeneye as a kid and absolutely loved it. But the idea of it being the "greatest" fps of all time is laughable. Quake not being on the list is also laughable. Everything GameTrailers does is absolutely rubbish from Satterfield to their reviews and their videos.

Outside of emulation no, it's never been rereleased in any form and the XBLA version was cancelled. You could get Perfect Dark on XBLA however, as it updated on Goldeneye in a lot of ways. Outside of the shift towards aliens midway through the campaign, it's a complete improvement over GE and I still enjoy playing it.

Yeah. I think that when people look back to Goldeneye they picture the multiplayer (which was obviously worse than most of what you'd find on PC), but they might be forgetting how good the campaign was.

Either way, though, first? lol.

I can understand GoldenEye at #1 because for its meaning and what it did for console FPS games. But when this about the meaning of a FPS, why is Halo 3 listed and not Halo Combat Evolved since that one had a much bigger impact than 3 and can be seen as some kind of successor to what GoldenEye was doing.

And if the meaning of a game is so important - doesn't that make Doom #1?

I was pleased to see Unreal Tournament on this list, but why isn't Quake 3 on it? It deserves a spot just as much as UT and I always thought it was the way more popular game. Also there is speculation that you find parts of its source code even in some of today's shooters..

Half-Life 1 was more important than Half-Life 2 while Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is easily the best game of that franchise.

I don't understand the logic behind the list, it seems like with every spot they decided a game with different standards in mind.

I agree that Goldeneye aged terribly, but I still think it should be on the list (though not first place) for the reasons others have already mentioned; it did many things that were unique for FPS's (not just console FPS) at the time. Also it was the first console FPS that did multiplayer really well.

TFC was better than TF2
Half-Life was better than Half-Life 2
Halo was better than Halo 3
Call of Duty was better than COD4
Battlefield 1942 was better than Battlefield 2

If we're going off importance, Halo 3 doesn't beat Halo 1.

If we're going off gameplay, Halo 3 doesn't beat Halo 1.

Halo 1.

Perfect Dark XBLA. It's not Bond but it's the better game. You'll probably get a bit lost in the levels but it's still a great game IMO. Very unlike a modern FPS but there're ideas in there that still haven't been replicated. Just don't do what most reviews seem to have done and assume one play through on easy is enough...

My favourite FPS of this gen.

The way I play it now: 1964 emulator (PistolGrip version) + 4 wireless 360 controllers. The control layout I have play exacly like modern shooters (dual analog, bumper for reload, trigger to shoot, etc).

The PistolGrip custom emulator is to enable 60fps. It works fantastic. There are others 1964 versions that enable 60fps, but the pistolgrip one is still the best.

So who is going to let GT know that "shooter" and "multiplayer" are not the exact same things?

I wonder if they'll ever be able to understand the difference.

If they knew this then Bioshock 1 would have made the list instead of Starsiege or w/e the fuck that is.

Mine looks like this (one entry per series):

1) GoldenEye 64
2) Half Life
3) Call of Duty 2 (slight edge over Black Ops)
4) Doom
5) Day of Defeat
6) Counter Strike
7) Halo
8) Battlefield 1942
9) Team Fortress 2
10) Duke Nukem 3D

I don't enjoy and play FPS games as much as I used to but I don't feel like I'm missing out on something groundbreaking. Also, as the list shows I generally prefer thematic FPS games over fast fragfests such as Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena. Or perhaps it's just that I don't want to constantly keep running around, I'm not the most skillful gamer so I like to take advantage of my surroundings.

The top ten FPS list will never reach a consensus anyway. I'm saddened by the lack of love for NOLF2 and MoH: Allied Assault and CoD: United Offensive in particular
