GTA 5: Rapper Wants Game Recalled Over Track Inclusion

Pissed at Rockstar a bit over this.

I going to assume they asked him for permission, he said 'no', and then Rockstar found another legal way to use the songs. Damn Rockstar, you should have just respected his decision and left him out of the game.

lol wow you are SO witty with your (c)rap commentary.

FYI Daz was one of the main producers on the first Dr. Dre Chronic album where he was featured on quite a few songs. He also produced a good portion of Snoop's Doggystyle album.

And quite a few 2Pac tracks, including Ambitionz Az a Ridah which is on GTA5.

Not surprised to see people defending GTA over something like this, if it were something CoD they'd be losing their shit.

I'd have thought this rap artist would at least be a little flattered R* wanted to use his work in their game when I'd have thought they'd be more concerned with putting actual music in it.

I'm implying rap isn't real music.

I haven't read all the replies/progression of the thread, but I have to ask:

For a game (or any project in any medium) of this scale, don't you think they would have had all the music cleared before they released?

It would be like NASA launching a rocket, and then later realizing they sourced the rocket fuel from some meth head in the middle of the woods.

edit for clarification: the rocket crashes

Patch them out, don't even bother replacing them the game has too much damn hip hop in it anyway.

This. Can't stand rap/hip hop and there's like what, 3 channels?

Where the fuck is the metal channel? I can't stand the punk stuff on Channel X. The only station I kind of like is Worldwide FM.

How about some new channels as DLC?

You know what to do Rockstar, remove the songs and replace them with Regulate.

twice
you know daz and snoop are cousins, and that warren g, snoop and nate dogg had a group called 213 back in the day right? there's no way warren would agree to that.

Give the guy the five digits or whatever. Isn't GTA V the biggest money making game at launch of all time? Ain't gonna hurt Rockstar that much to shoot him over $20k or whatever.

No one knows anything. Leave Rockstar alone. Daz is just jealous and if he thinks he deserves money and respect, then he should make his own video game and just GTFO.

I dislike rap and hip hop, but look at the game you guy's are talking about. This is GTA.

still a possibility they talked to his record label or whoever has the distribution rights.

this kind of stuff happens in the US with elections, candidates will pay record labels for the right to use a band's music, the band will say "hey we don't support this political candidate, stop using our music" which makes the candidate look bad even though they already paid for the right to use the music.

Simply asking for a game with this many sales to be recalled because of a dispute over a couple of his tracks is arrogant and ignorant especially since it seems like he was circumvented by his labels and not because of the fault of Rockstar. I doubt an oversight like this would pass Rockstar's legal department.

If they wanted something with Mack 10 they should have used Westside Conneciton Bow Down.

Rockstar just stealing some pro moves from the masters. They probably went to him first and when they struck out went to another party who could authorize it. Would be funny if this all boiled down to some paper work problem due to changing his stage name from "Dat Nigger Daz"

Kick in the door, I look on the floor
It's my little cousin Daz and he's fuckin' my hoe, yo
(Bitches ain't shit)
I uncocked my shit... I'm heart-broken but I'm still locked

Mistakes happen. Even multi-million dollar rockets explode on the launch pad. Quite tragically and famously, at that. Just because something has big stakes and should have everything triple-checked doesn't mean that it always happens.

The bigger the project, the bigger the chance for a critical element to be lost between the cracks.

Yeah, patch the game so that when I buy my retail copy and play on my xbox that's not connected to the internet I still hear the songs. Makes sense.

Did they patch LittleBigPlanet when it had that Islamic music that stirred controversy or did they recall the game and release new copies?

If the data's on the disc, you can't "patch it out." His song is still illegally printed on the disc. Even if it was never used in the game in the first place, but on the disc, that's still illegal to print.

If the game isn't 100% guaranteed online, you can't "patch it out" anyway.

Not only that, but the damage is already done. He can sue even if R* removes all remnants of the song in the game . They already used the song. They already broke copyrights if the allegations are true. This is not just a cease and desist.

4 grand for both songs is a splash in the ocean in comparison to what GTA V will make in life time sales Can't blame him.

Yea, but there are literally a jabillion other rap songs they could have plugged in and who would have even cared...but yea, Rockstar messed up if they didn't have the rights to it, I agree with that, and they'll probably pay more for his two songs than the rest in total now.

A rapper (who I've never heard of) should be telling Rockstar they'll give them songs for free, shit the game only exposed his songs to how many million people of the same target demographic.

Rockstar should be ashamed of their greed for making an offer this ridiculously low but the guy's an idiot for accepting the offer in the first place if he wasn't satisfied or didn't become aware of the magnitude of GTA until later. It's his fault, what was done is done.

Edit: My bad, I didn't pay attention to the "turning down the offer" part. That makes Take Two Interactive look like scum.

Unless I missed something, it sounds like they used his songs without his permission. I don't blame him for trying to get compensated.

He didn't accept the offer that's why he's pissed. Read it again.

So? Except for Franklin, rap / hip hop music doesn't suit the other characters in the game. It made sense in San Andreas, but even that game had a good selection of rock music.

I'm in the "they weren't his in the first place" bandwagon (there's indication that he doesn't actually own the licensing rights to them), and that they simply acquired the license from the actual license-holder. I imagine he's just trying to make a lot of noise, to no real purpose.

Rockstar won't make a statement until they've sorted it out one way or another through their legal department.

Other genres of music and creative culture didn't help popularize, to as great a degree, the music-imbued, anti-establishment and crime-obsessed culture that fostered an entire generation of people who grew up in the 90's and were extremely receptive to games that would have otherwise been less cool to little Billy and his cowboy hat.

The comics code authority used to regulate comics in it's entirety and had a rule against anti-heroes. All good and bad had to be absolute, and there could never be a lack of consequence for evil. The barrier broken down by the state v gangsta rap, resulting in the absolution of culpability in parental advisory stickers, really helped buck a hundred years long trend of artist censorship by puritan virtue. Same spirit that gave us an ESRB. Even though it can be a negative stigma and stereotype for hip-hop, it and modern crime "noir" are inseparable sister cities.

Also, the music is supposed to be radio stations that match the fact that cars have radios in them, not the psyches of each character. You don't not have a hip-hop station in the event that no controllable character is black.

I'm offended by this, but it's your opinion.
You should pay attention to the earlier mod warning in this thread, as a junior, not paying attention is not a good thing.

Bullshit, it's fucking GTA. 4K is low for a game that WILL make RS multi millions.

As if his song will have really contributed to making the game successful. I don't even know what songs they are, don't really listen to the radio station in game, and usually it's to only listen to the news reports or the talk stations that are funny.

He should be glad to be included at all, since guys like Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, Rihanna, and many others' songs are used.

Don't know whether or not their offer was a low ball offer or not, but Rockstar would be in the wrong if he refused them and they still used it. Doesn't matter how much money the game HAS made, it matters what is average price for licensing one or two songs for use, no different in say trailers, commercials, movies, whatever.

Rockstar ran by Suge Knight, confirmed

still hanging dudes over balconies & shakin out them coins in 2013, better axe somebody

Does Daz own his own masters?

still not sure on this, but there's a lotta assumptions here that he doesn't

Glad this was addressed, feels good actually.

+1, seeing garbage posts exposed is always nice, thanks youngblood!

How many other people have only heard or noticed this guy because of GTA 5, that is the point i was making, if i don't like the so called rap now that's my own personal opinion.

already addressed but any exposure (especially "itunes sales" haha) arguments are garbage here; if you played san andreas you heard his influence, much less west coast hip hop in the 90. and seriously, no one cares about your opinion on music you probably haven't listened to in forever here on gaming side anyway

odd that you're still a junior

Off topic but you can buy this song as DLC for Def Jam Rapstar. So good.

still? i happily bought it a while back, but i understood the shop was closed recently, unless i was mistaken?

I wasn't actually serious, I'm actually a fan of rap music believe it or not. I thought that might have been taken as more of a joke than it was, but I guess I should know better in threads where tensions are running a little high.

Sorry :(

odd that you're still a junior

:(

I'm sure he's enjoying all that royalty money that will start flowing in from all the attention he is getting at least.

Highly unlikely Rockstar would include the tracks without them being signed off.

I guess it depends how much of a right he has on those songs compared to the dozen other people who also have rights attributed to them.

Odd that R* would have just straight up stolen the track. Especially given all their legal and music licensing trouble in the past. Had to have been some other legal means of getting the song in there.

Dumb thing to do if they didn't. Especially for a game this massive. It's not like an artist wouldn't find out eventually if their song had been included illegally.

If this is true then I'd they guess they'll settle with Daz for more money as opposed to destroying all unsold copies? Not sure how this usually goes exactly.
