GTA IV censored in Australia

This sucks because I can't cancel my pre-order and make another on at an international location because the SUPER LIMITED EDITION is already sold out.

GRRR THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IVE BEEN MAJORLY PISSED OFF AT THE OFLC.

I've been thinking, and something hasn't really been sitting quite right with me about this. A few people have pretty much summed up that niggling little feeling in the back of my head:
I was just reading elsewhere that everything relating to this information traces back to some blog on The Age website and there's not a reliable source. Rockstar apparently said months ago that Australia and Germany were not getting a censored version. We do need real confirmation.
and
You really would think more would have been said by now and I was the same in thinking that after last years rating and early February confirmation (of being uncut) that it may not be true.

The Age Blog really wouldn't be the first to know (IMO). Either way, with a monster forty hour rush-job campaign (see other thread), this game will be so massive you won't miss a thing... assuming there is any truth to The Age posting.
I'd actually put my money on the above two statements being more believable than the one blog... even though I'm sure I've stated otherwise earlier in this thread. Plus, it's a good excuse to post this:

Well the OFLC didn't censor, so its true. Rockstar self-censored. They sent a safer version to Australia knowing the problems they would face if they got it wrong. It may be that the full game would pass the OFLC, but we'll never know.

The "one Blog" is one of Australias biggest Newspapers which has a dedicated gaming reporter. I am not saying it is not wrong but I think it is one of the more reliable sources around.

Initial reaction: Fucking censorship!
Secondary reaction: eh, I still get to play the game, nothing that meaningful will be taken from it.

It's not really just that. It's the endless banning of videogames, movies and putting up national internet filters ...

Are we living in the same country here? Sucks about GTAIV but I can't think of any other movie or game I wanted in recent times that was banned, nor have I ever had my internet filtered...

Anyway I cancelled my pre-order with EB this morning. They didn't ask why so I volunteered the info and it was the first they'd heard of a censored version.

The Australian government pulls crap like that all the time. This should have been assumed long ago.

GTA being banned in Australia is not because the government just stepped in and 'pulled crap'. We have a long-standing problem with the OFLC and its lack of R ratings for video-games that needs to be fixed.

Has anyone from Australia used this site.

$60 AUD for the Xbox 360 Pal version with free shipping or $70 with UPS Express.

True true.

Guess im taking a risk on that one. Im just waiting on confirmation that the games they sell are English with the Box and Manuals.

Last PAL game I ordered overseas was written in German :lol

Nice to see this tradition is alive and well in Australia. I have fond memories of mailing copies of GTA:VC across to Australian friends who got the neutered Aussie version back in the day.

I'm still not convinced enough that NZ are getting an uncut version to order one from there, I've ordered from the UK just to be sure.

It happened with GTA3, GTA:VC and GTA:SA. If historical precedent is anything to go by it will get an R18 rating here and remain uncensored. The NZ censorship guys aren't as backward as their Australian equivalent.

It isn't the possibility of NZ censoring, it's that sometimes distributors can't be arsed sending NZ different stock to what they're sending to Australia.

Well I suppose that is a possibility - but it would be the first time. With all of the previous GTA games we've received R18 uncut versions. And I can see that it has an R18 classification here already apparently, so that's a good sign.

The OFLC is probably one of the more liberal rating and classifications boards in western society. It's not their fault they cannot rate something as R because that rating does not exist for games.

Blame the Neanderthal in South Australia for any classification woes you may have. We're not living in a police state, TBH I'd rather a GTA with slightly edited content then having major ISPs filtering ports/traffic, on top of having major corporate bodies out for your blood.

$120 does hurt though :(

Is this trashing the USA? Because our Internet is EASILY superior to anything that has to travel across that horrific oversaturated pipeline.

It doesn't seem to be, does something there remind you of the USA?

Ironic for a country that originated from criminals.:lol

I heart Australians.

I guess the penal colony can't have the hardcore version since you never know what will happen down there . . . they'll turn the continent into Road Warrior land. :D

I'm really curious on what this content is.

hot coffee?

Rockstar has said that a cut scene that involved a firearm being inserted into a body cavity was removed/edited before they sent it for classification to the OFLC.

This is also backed up by the OFLC classification report on the game. It apperars that this is the only thing missing from the Australian version. Something that was pretty stupid to remove in the first place. Rockstar had their reasons I guess though.

In the end its not going to ruin the game and its not like anybody cant use youtube to watch the missing scene anyway.

Humm. If this is true, I honestly don't think I'll bother about importing a copy from the UK. Unless GTA turns out to be region free, then I'll probably get it from playasia or something.

Anybody played leaked game & can confirm? I hope it's only the one cutscene.
The Aussie version replaced guns with water pistols, explosions of fire with explosions of flowers and knifes stabbing private parts with lollipops stabbing private parts

I am really getting sick of this shit, I wish they would leave our games alone.

BTW: Today the Telegraph had an article abot GTA IV being a new low in gaming (or somthing along those lines).

Watch ABC or SBS if you are interested in real news.

You really are just as removed from reality as the rest of the population if you think those stations are any better.

I'm also waiting to hear from people that have played it.

If it includes the prostitute scenes/actions that are in this version at the moment then I can't imagine anything else being censored. Sexual content is the devil.

I see what you did there

One newspaper today said Rockstar were ordered to remove several excessively violent scenes - even though nobody knows what Rockstar cut, and they were never ordered to do anything, as the only version they submitted to the OFLC passed first time :lol Gotta stir that anti-GTA sentiment.

Is the 'strong sexual content' banned in the reason behind the censorship?

Is it just like in GTA3 where you get in the car and it rumbles for a few minutes or is there actually nudity?

After watching the IGN review i really want to know what was cut. There's no way that the car sex is in the game, no way.

Fully clothed humping, hand-jobs and blow-jobs, all through a car window and all fully clothed. Ehhh yep, seems kind of pointless but hey whatever.

Yeah its not. Already confirmed. Theres all sorts of rumours floating around - especially at the official xbox forum... (is it just me or are they like really really really embarrassingly dumb over there?)

Other speculation is that some language has been changed(swearing)... also that drinking has been turned down. The best one yet is that the Aus version doesnt have dismemberment... they think the US version has body parts flying off when you hit a ped in the car etc... and that the Aussie version doesnt have it. These fuck tards actually believe this.

Posted by Dominus at the Xboxworld forum:

"hookers are in, the camera just moves down to focus on the bumper bar bouncing a bit with some sound effects. No health boost either as far as I can tell." :lol

Makes you wonder what else has been toned down.....

Thanks good to know, I'm so going to go and do that when my family is watching me play. :D Love freaking out my family

The problem is with "Sexual Violence" in gaming (Mostly because games here are reted under the film classifications and not their own system).

So, the sex with prostitutes was not the problem. Being able to get out of the car and killing them to get your money back was. :lol

As for GTAIV
You can have sex with a hooker in your car, the hooker actually sits on your lap and bounces up and down. Its all pretty corny

*EDIT*
I have seen a few of the articles in the national newspapers. Annoyingly they all have sensationalist headlines and usually only one source of information... The Australian Family Association.
