GTA IV First Review (OXM UK)

Is the whole city open to you right from the outset or is it like the past games (with several sections only accessible later on)? And while I'm asking questions, will there also be bicycles and motorcycles, big trucks, all that non-sedan vehicles too?

Like past games, one section is open (I prefer it this way). Motorcycles are in pics dude, bicycles are out, big trucks also in pics.

Wow, after reading that article (plus previews with other random events) the first thing I'm doing is slowly walking through busy areas. The agressive A.I has certainly been boosted judging from these accounts. There was an article a month or two ago where Houser or someone in charge of the game was talking about a cool random occurence. It started off with a simple infraction and ended up a full scale gang vs. police war where Niko was able to walk away without consequence :lol That's one of I think 2 previews I read where there's this awesome snowball effect because some peds are way fucking agressive.

-The city's closed off as usual (jesus Rockstar).
-No bicycles
-Various styles of motorcycles are available. Same with trucks and other "non-sedan" vehicles.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do we know yet how the climbing works? I know it says you can scale walls or climb buildings or something like that. Is it only certain structures (mission related perhaps, or Press "A" to climb kind of thing)?

Also, can you climb fire escapes? (like in the red MSpainted picture of the MP above)

There's no button context climbing. Meaning, you automatically grab on to whatever you can reach by jumping and if you can climb up, you will. It's no Assassins Creed though. ;)

Yeah, you can climb up fire escapes etc.
 
Whoever said Rockstar has bad taste in hip hop needs to have their head examined. One song by Akon doesn't mean shit. The last three GTA's have had incredible hip hop songs that fit perfectly with the time period the games took place in. Even the first game with limited licensing had good stuff from artists most people don't get to hear.
 
any confirmation on how custom soundtracks will be used? I'd love to assign Album X to Radio Station X in the game, and so on. I'm guessing we won't be lucky enough to see that.

As easy as it would be for them to do that (especially on the 360) I'm thinking them pushing the Amazon downloadable tracks thing will mean it isn't implemented.

Oh, so it's kind of like how climbing fences worked in San Andreas? You jump at it and he'll climb it if he can. Nice. That's perfect.

I haven't preordered yet. I hope I still can.

It's confirmed on 360, since every 360 game has one by default.

It was never officially said that the game would have a custom soundtrack. So until that's changed, I wouldn't expect the PS3 to have one.

i have pre-ordered the game from play asia and don't even own a ps3 or a 360 thats the sort of effect its having on people.

This one's set in the present, so why not? No one can use the excuse that PEOPLE ARE BREAKING THE GAME!!1 by listening to music that didn't exist in the game's time period.
 
Maybe I'm crazy but to lessen the pain of waiting for the release I've started playing ScarFace on my 360. I never got around to playing much of it back in the day but am a huge fan of the movie. Its not the best GTA type of game but its cracking me up with all the one liners and playing as Tony Montana is pretty fun. Just a little to pass the time till GTAIV arrives.

And visually I am already use to the so-so visuals of ScarFace so I'm gonna be blown away by GTAIV,plus I've avoided the stuff spoken of thats new in IV so its gonna be fresh for me.

And +1 for custom soundtracks. Hell even I add in a few 80's songs to the already great ScarFace soundtrack,it never hurts to customise your own list of songs. GTA will be no different. Beastie Boys,VanHalen,Madonna,and Samantha Fox in my mix ll the way.

Rockstar already confirmed that they won't be building in a custom soundtrack option into the GTA radio on both versions.

wait are you saying that they intentionally disabled the builtin custom soundtrack feature in the 360?

he's saying the exact opposite, in that theres no custom soundtrack option in game, but you can use the one from the guide.
 
That's not what people mean when they say "custom soundtrack." It's a totally seperate feature from the interface where you can make a playlist that will only play when you turn on that specific radio station in your car.

That was an awesome feature. It's a real shame that they didn't incorporate it.

When i used to play it on Xbox i would also make sure that the custom tracks that were played corresponded to the time that the game was set in.
 
Oh, I just saw the first Euro advert! Has this been shown beofre?

It's the same idea they used in one of the trailers with Niko walking down the street with the backround changing behind him. Shows about 20 different locations. New song to I think. It ends with the Xbox logo and says you can pick up the console for €199.

Would like to see it. Haven't noticed any TV ads for it on UK TV yet.. but I guess from your post that they are kicking off....
 
Okay, got it recorded in good quality. Uploading to megaupload instead to keep the quality. Others can YouTube it after if they want as my account seems to be messing up. I got really slow upload speeds (7.21 KB/s) so it could take about 15 mins :(
