GTA IV new version hands-on + screens (IGN)

It'd be silly to think otherwise. Sony and Microsoft know the importance of this game, I would be surprised if Sony hadn't "deploy their expert" to go aid in making the game as best as possible.

So far everything we have is from the 360 version. Not a single screen or video from the PS3 version. Am curoius to see the reaction of some people when they show the PS3 version and it looks better than the 360 version ?
Oh God, it will be tech wars all over again
unfortunately history has shown though that when there is a media blackout for the PS3 sku, its because it doesn't =/

see:

The Darkness
Stranglehold
Assassin's Creed
Turok

.....i'm probably missing some

Unlike the oft-infuriating save system of previous GTA games, GTA IV will now auto-save progress after important mission way-points, which should go some way to relieving some of the frustration experienced in the past. Rockstar also mentioned that if you fail a mission you'll be given the option to jump straight back in and have another attempt, using text messages on Niko's mobile.

THANK YOU GOD!!!!!

Chances of that happening are very slim indeed.

If the PS3 version looked better than the 360 version, that's what they would be showing.

Well, that and a nice cheque from Microsoft for associating GTA4 with 360 (w/ downloadable content, etc.).

Wasn't Stranglehold as good or better than the 360 version? I thought you had made the official thread.

Fair enough. Past history shows you're setting yourself up for disappointment though.

I suppose MS money will be blamed if the 360 version looks better as well, right?

Good point but with the rumor that Sony was co-helping them develop the PS3 version, we never really know until it is unveiled.

I personally think that by launch they'll be on a par, maybe with some minor DMC4 difference people can squabble over, but we'll see.

I recall EGMShane saying that GTA4 on PS3 was in serious trouble, and that Sony sent a team of their top programmers to go help them, which is what I assume you are talking about. The PS3 version of GTA4 will be fine if they got help from Sony's A-team.

One-sided recollection FTW!

Both versions were in serious trouble (with different issues) at various points in development internal devs from both MGS and Sony were helping Rockstar with version-specific sections of code. IIRC MGS guys were helping with streaming from the disk and texture compression to try and cram everything on to one DVD; Sony guys were helping with swapping stuff in and out of the PS3's memory.

I think everyone at Rockstar was more familiar with the 360 architecture though, after the Table Tennis experience.

This won't be like Valve handing off to EA to pull a shitty cash-in port of Orange Box. Everything we've seen so far points to them taking both versions seriously and optimising for each accordingly.

What are the chances of the PS3 getting the better version, technically-speaking? Lossless audio, different textures...stuff that takes advantage of the Blu-ray drive.

I can't imagine the anger I'd have if this game wasn't coming to the 360. Can you imagine how different things would be for the PS3 if this game were exclusive for Sony again?

Thank goodness for moneyhats!

GTA being on Xbox is the main reason I bought my 360. If it had been a playstation exclusive, then I would have a PS3.

It'll probably turn out like VF5, better textures but more jaggies.

They should steal the whole airplane-going-through-buildings idea that Saints Row 2 has.

I bet you still lose all your weapons or something.

True, unless they give you a way to regain your weapons then any mission replay is pointless. Although my memory may be a bit hazy here, I think VCS may have done something like that for when you were busted/wasted.

Also I'm glad to hear that the satirical GTA tone is still prevalent. The early previews suggesting that it was going for a more serious and gritty tone had me worried. Honestly, I think the humour and character is one of the biggest reasons GTA strides behemoth-like over the competition.

Lossless audio maybe, different textures no.

Ah well...take what I can get, I guess. I'm eager to see the expansion content the 360 gets. I think Sony blew it by letting that deal go through. Surely they could have done something.

Edit: Ah, caught your edit. The elimination of repeating textures would be cool.

as good, but it took them months longer to get the ps3 version finished.

yep keyphrase is "as good"

...unfortunately it had its fair share of problems...like the fact that the 5.1 for Hardboiled was outta sync as well as for Stranglehold itself (Turok PS3 demo has this SAME ISSUE!)

Visually it held its own with a bit more framedrops....well except for the "rainy slum" level

Getting arrested will have bigger consequences than simply losing weapons this time around.

Maybe you'll get a criminal record.. too many arrests and you get a police tag or something.

hopefully...but I forsee PS3's ram being an issue and the game eventually thrashing the harddrive constantly ala PS3 version of Assassin's Creed

For a free roam game with this much stuff in it, looks pretty good to me.

That's the bottom line pretty much. Anyone expecting a massive game like this - with all its goings on - to look like Gears of War, for example, is setting their expectations way too goddamned high.

Ever since that piece of info was revealed last summer people have pooled theories into this matter. The biggest theory is that you end up going to jail when arrested and lose all of, if not half of your funds. Of course, GTAIV has a bank system and you should deposit money into your bank as often as possible to save yourself in case something like that happens.

That was one of the best (and occasionally worst) things about Scarface. You really felt like the cash earned from your antics was burning a hole in your pocket so you had to deposit it at the bank or spend it in case you got busted/wasted.

I expect it. If GoW was a massive, free-roam game.

In Vice City Stories you have the option to rebuy all your weaponry for a minimal fee when you respawn at the Hospital and Police station.

okay, you make excuses for them.

Yea, I mean, who plays games to have fun right? I just want to sit and stare at pretty graphics!

Funny you'd mention Mass Effect, given all the tearing / frame drops / texture loading...I'd say GTA IV may be more 'visually pleasing' just because it might lack those little annoyances.

I hate to go OT, but why do you guys keep bringing up Table Tennis when it was a completely different developer on the other side of the world?

it was a testbed for Rockstar's game engine "RAGE". Rockstar San Diego (TT devs) are helping out with GTA IV.

I like the sound of the cover system. I like the fact that you use a button to get into cover. Also gunplay just sounds a lot better. I wish we could know more about the health system though. Euphoria sounds like its being used really well.

Also multiplayer being shown in a month or so? Looks like we'll be seeing GTA IV sooner than people think.

We'll be lucky if they are identical (PS3 on par with 360 version). I've never, ever seen a multiplatform game being shown mainly on the 360 prior to release to actually turn out to be as good on PS3.

COD4, Turok, The Darkness, Assassin's Creed, Orange Box etc... PS3 = inferior version

On the other side, multiplatform games shown mainly on PS3 turn out to be as good as the 360 (not necessarely better). DMC4, Burnout Paradise, Sega Rally Evo etc...

Going by this pattern, I'd say GTAIV will run better on 360. Whatever "they are identical / you wont spot a differnce" bullshit devs will tell you. Even those you trust the most...

Sounds like they've fixed many of the things that I hated about past GTAs, although I completed every one of them except for the PSP side-stories.

The bit about the "friendship" missions scares me. I hated the romance missions in SA and basically ignored them whenever possible, as well as the "gang territories" stuff. I did just enough to progress, then forgot about them as they were not fun at all. Felt like time fillers. Now they say here that the friendship missions in GTA4 aren't required but that they will make the game significantly easier if you do them. That MIGHT really mean "They're not required. (Unless you want to be able to beat the game with normal skills.)" I guess we'll see.

Christ.

And who were the people saying OMG FALL 2008 and all of that crap? They should be eating crow in every GTAIV thread for now on.

You sure give me one with you incessant whining. No need to act like the game is mother-effing queen of beauty now, the city is huge, gameplay will be great, but visually compromises have been made and it shows. It pisses off some people, so what ? Geez.

CoD4 is exactly the same on PS3
