GTA IV to use Table Tennis 360 Graphics engine

Source: A Total Video Games piece citing an MTV interview ... which doesn't appear to be on the MTV Web site.

The official story: Grand Theft Auto publisher Rockstar Games had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

What we heard: When Electronic Arts bought Criterion Games in July 2004, it did more than add the Burnout extreme-racing franchise to its game garage. The Guildford, UK-based developer is also the creator of the RenderWare engine, which powers many games published by EA rivals--Games like Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Take-Two Interactive, owner of Rockstar, must have been less than thrilled when EA bought Criterion, as the purchase meant it would have pay royalties to its archival for each GTA game sold.

Given the royalty conundrum and the desire for cutting-edge graphics, many assumed that the next GTA would be based on an all-new engine. So when word began to spread that MTV was saying GTA IV would be based on RAGE, industry watchers nodded approvingly. After all, the technology--which stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine--was developed in-house at Rockstar, meaning no royalty payments to third parties would be necessary. Furthermore, Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis shows that RAGE is capable of both impressive graphics and physics, two areas which drew fire from GTA detractors.

But as logical as the TVG story sounded, it could not be verified as of press time. Neither the game sections of the US nor UK MTV Web sites had any visible stories about GTA IV, and inquiries to Rockstar reps had gone unanswered as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Given the positive feedback on Table Tennis and the huge potential savings, this smells legit.

Table Tennis mini game confirmed.

Bogus. No way man. I have no idea it would be possible to have Table tennis quality in GTA environment at the moment.

um... isn't table tennis doing a whole lot of stuff at high quality because it doesn't have big open environments?

Unless the engine really does scale up fine, i don't imagine having a populated city with that engine quality ... although we can hope!

Makes sense if true. I hope it has the same visual fidelity in large expansive areas. Looking at GTA-clones and other open games next-gen, I doubt it.

At this point in time, ANYTHING is better than what San Andreas currently looks like.

Hell, they could take the same gameplay and add some graphical tweaks and I'd be satisfied.

well they're going to get slagged by fanboys either way.

If GTA looks like crap they'll moan 'doesn't look as good at Table Tennis'

If GTA looks like Table Tennis then that means TT wasn't using its full potential

Just because RAGE is used in TT, and RAGE might be used in GTA, gives us no clue how GTA will look. Well perhaps in the cutscene closeups, but thats about it.

same engine doesn't mean same graphics huh; using the same engine doesn't mean having the same level of detail.
In any case, I can't imagine anything more distant than TT and Gta in terms of graphic structure, but maybe their engine is versatile enough.

What they called 'game engine' is not the other game that use the same 'game engine' will turn out to be the same graphic quality. Just scale everything down and you got next gen GTA :D

Exactly, took far to long for somebody to point that out.

Yeah, but hopefully if they don't make GTA 4's environment sprawl out over the span of four countries and three oceans and actually try to condense it to Vice City sized areas, it might be close to Table Tennis quality.

Put Jesper in GTAIV! I want to hack him up with a chainsaw.

They'll be doing their parody characters (from games that are inspired by GTA) for GTA4 hopefully. Which means a character that looks like John Cena and a character that looks like he was colored with crayola crayons.

QFT.
that's pretty much the thread folks.

GTA with realistic looking characters don't work dammit. It's apart of it's charm.

Just because its using an engine where the first game looked realistic doesn't mean it will. It's just an engine.

i knew it. ....................holy shit. oh yes jesper and solayman are gonna be there and get what they have coming to them

QFT. Those two moth****az better be in the game to receive the beating they deserve!

Wait, what?
He didn't mean that literally. He's implying that using an engine for two different games does not necessarily mean they will look anything like one another. The fact that GTA4 will use RAGE does not mean that it will look anything like Table Tennis.

Exactly, both games are made by different studios with different focuses and goals.

You guys saying things like "table tennis used realistic characters, GTA does not work with realistic characters" and "table tennis doesnt have expansive environments, it is not proper for GTA" really should learn about engines if you consider yourself hardcore gamers. an engine if well made can be scalable, graphically. Just like people say that doom 3 engine can only do dark environments, phfffff. Learn your facts then post here in gaf.

i have a feeling rockstar is going to take the series in another direction with this one and it might not look like any GTA before it. usually by the fourth installment of any franchise everything is sort of renewed. but then i guess you could argue this isn't technically the fourth installment though

Most of you in this thread should learn the difference between engines and assets. Using the same engine doesn't automatically mean that every denizen of the game will be detailed as the ping pong players.

GTA needs some new graphics badly. It needs new gameplay just as badly, if not more. We've all been playing essentially the same game since GTA3. I'm sure alot of people wouldn't mind more of the same, but it's getting kinda monotonous to me..I'd like to see next-gen GTA make major improvements in both graphics and gameplay.

Well in the Zelda example, the controls and the way Link interacts with the world is virtually the same from one game to another.

How can you do that for a Table Tennis game?

They need to go dual analogue for the aiming on foot. I hope R* steals some of the things that Saints Row is doing well.

I mean, obviously GTA isn't going to PLAY or feel like TT, so if there's not the same amount of detail in the characters or environments, what's the point in telling people it's the same engine?

...Isn't that what he just said? Both Zelda's are using the same engines I assume, that's why they're so similar. But with GTA IV, it's just using the same assets as the Table Tennis game, not the fullout game engine.

so they don't have to build a new one. From the sounds of it, Rage is going to be Rockstars version of renderware so it'll probably be as flexible. as for telling people, rockstar isn't totalvideogames is, because anything passes for news these days.

i hope it doesnt look the same. the one thing cool about GTA is its UNrealistic look. If they make it look real i ain't buying it. Maybe more realistic environments but i think realistic looking characters would ruin the feel of the game.
