GTA V Comparison PC 4K vs PS4 vs PS3

Ok, looks a little worse than I was remembering, but it still looked better when I was playing it vs looking at these screens on here. The LoD improved the closer I got.

Yeah, that's the only way to get decent shots from it (and still compresses it a good bit). Definitely not as bad as the pics posted were making it out to be.

I agree. Despite showing the PC version looks awesome as expected, why would anyone post a comparison like this.............

But yeah, Craveonline/jleack article, so proceed with caution just to be on the safe side.

ohhh, that dude is masterful with it.

If I remember correctly, there was a guy who modded dynamic headlights for cars into watch dogs. Looked pretty good to me.

Yeah, but as far as I'm aware, those shadows were already coded into the game but essentially commented out and disabled. If a game didn't have them to begin with it would be a lot more effort to add them.

I thought IV had that on consoles, too. I could be wrong though, as all I remember from what I played on 360 was how fucking hazy and blurry everything was, as this was many years ago.

I don't think it did, especially considering how bad it arleady ran. Not even GTA 5 has them so I doubt 4 did back when the engine was still unfamiliar.

I used snapomatic to try and get the zoomed in perspective, since I figured that's how he got the background closer.

I think they just zoomed way in on a normal screenshot, so the object we're seeing close up could have been much farther in the background. Which means that we're seeing a significant LOD improvement on top of the higher resolution.

You are taking a lot of this out of context.

You don't actually know where the 3 way comparison shot is taken in terms of distance. They could have taken those images at a greater distance and simply cropped the images to the area that matched, extenuating the difference in LOD at distance and leading to that additional blurriness.

On top of that, I am super sceptical of these in-game methods of screen capture. As we have seen with Driveclub, the IQ and LOD changes when using those images taken via "photo mode" when compared to direct capture. I have no idea if that is the case with GTA V since I haven't looked into it, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Just wait till you can actually do a uniform check between them all - all captured directly in-game.

I'm standing at that spot right now. There's no way to get that perspective while running around. Snapomatic is the only way I've seen to do it.

When I first got there, it took me a second to realize that yes, that's the direction I'm supposed to be looking. The other pics I posted is exactly what it looks like when not in the cellphone cam.

There's not a photomode. It's the PS4's capture. I didn't even take the picture in Snapomatic as you can clearly see in the bottom info bar.

Man talk about DAT GRASS!

Digital foundry will be on fire when GTA 5 gets released on PC.

I'd guess that is LOD distance increases at work, since the grass is all there in the PS4 as someone else demonstrated. Several textures and even the buldings in the distance do look very different though, which I don't think is LOD related, but no one will know for sure till we actually can test it out properly rather than just speculating

I have no idea, I've never played the game, or used the PS4's capture system. The angle of that weird trapezoid tells me that you have the placement and angle wrong regardless. That skew in the 3 way image for the PS4 looks like it is part of the edge of the screen where the FOV makes things distort a bit. Your shots don't match up, which is my point. I have no idea how you can work out the exact position and crop of the image. It's too much speculation and then statement as fact. I'd rather wait and see

That's because they are upscaled to match the 4k crops.

I didn't even think of that.

Well, he got that perspective in the pic for the PS4 version and I'm at that exact spot as I'm typing this. You can't get the buildings in the background to get that close while keeping the box with the number 2 at that spot. Snapomatic cellphone cam got pretty close to it. It's just zooming in on the game's actual graphics and using the game's DOF blur that you can toggle on/off while playing. No photomode post-processing going on.

you are 3 times too close.
The crop is 720 pixels tall, a third of a 4k screen.

edit: or in other words, the cobblestone-to-palm image should fill 1/9th of your screen area, 1/3rd the height.
edit2: or not?

Use screenshotcomparison and quick switch the images if you think I'm wrong. Even without that, the shapes don't perfectly match, in which case you are in the wrong spot, so I'm not going to say it is an accurate representation, even though the correct placement would probably result in an almost identical outcome.

I'm more inclined to believe ScepticMatt's idea to explain that bluriness rather than it being zoomed in. If you put them all on a 4k TV and have one natively output 4k and the others stretch / upscale, it probably would give that appearance of bluriness. It isn't a good comparisons, so it is pretty futile to nitpick it to such a degree. It's better to wait for the actual released to tell that kind of stuff from proper controlled comparisons

Scaling my first image where you're walking around, shows if I'm 3 times too close then moving back will make the buildings and palms in the background smaller. It also shows the dirt trail around the bushes. So he's zooming in, I just am not in exact spot, but it's pretty damn close. :P (the zoomed in pic I posted)

I agree, but this comparison thread is here and I just wanted to see what that spot looked like instead of going off the horrible pics in the OP. I'm not sharing the pics to say "ha ha fuck you," it's just to show what it looks like from PS4's capture saved to USB.

I thought the PS4 version had a lot more grass in that farm field... Most fields do, at least. Not the same LOD but at least basic 2D shrubs and grass. I'm surprised that shot is from the PS4... I drive around there in Grapeseed pretty often each week and it's usually loaded with grass and weeds everywhere.

Gonna bet not a lot of people will be able to run it at the settings (4k aside) in the shots. But it's nice that they're future proofing the game so you'll be able to run it nicer looking for each upgrade you get.
