GTA V official BoxArt Revealed!

So how am I supposed to distinguish this from the other GTA games?

Some reasons:
- Three protagonists
- Underwater locations to explore
- Animals
- Apparently the driving controls have been completely overhauled as well, from what I've read. I don't have a source, but I remember reading something about the driving mechanics controlling more similar to an arcade racing game than GTA games have traditionally felt

One special reason:

You'll be playing it on your PS4. I hope I will! Do it, Rockstar! :D

Agreed. The boxart is scorching hot. I don't get the hate, and I'll throw the 'meh' comments in there. You know who you are. What were you expecting? This is the best artwork the Rockstar folks have ever put out for a GTA game, and you can't deny that. We all were assuming they wouldn't have changed the basic design. What were you all expecting? This artwork is exactly what I wanted, and I got it.

Can't wait.

Not only that, it came out of no where. I've never seen hate for the traditional GTA box art. And I have to question those expecting anything different. How long have they been involved in gaming, 2 years?

Welcome to my world since 03. And the websites are still up. I can't wait for Vs website. Rockstar goes all out. The websites are always incredibly detailed and awesome. Starting with San Andreas, they had an interactive map. Can't wait to see what they do with Vs website.

Holy shit can you imagine the possibilities. Good lordy.

Also, we need many, MANY gameplay videos showing off all the new tricks this game has up its sleeve. I'm sure it's a foregone conclusion that we'll see that stuff.

Rockstar won't do that. At least not a generic gameplay video. At least not before release. They want to keep things a surprise, too. Most of their videos are trailers and are cinematic. I've never seen an official video showing off how the player would view the game during gameplay.

What was your opinion of the driving? When you say you hope it doesn't play like IV, are you talking the on-foot or vehicle controls primarily? The gunplay? The multiplayer? Don't forget to relate it back to the cover art. lol

mainly the driving. its like driving a tank on ice. as far as the box art. the brighter colors give me the impression that the gameplay will be more "arcadey" or less serious compared to IV.

You're going to be disappointed. We won't see gameplay until the game has gone gold and it's leaked.

RDR had plenty of pre-release gameplay.

Yeah, but they had to throw extra marketing at that game since it didn't have an established userbase. It was new and Rockstar had to sell it.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was simply stating that we will most likely see gameplay snippet videos like they did for San Andreas. Remember clicking on the Pay n Spray icon on the San Andreas map, and you saw a clip of a car pulling into the Pay n Spray in San Fierro? Or that one clip of the ATV doing a mega jump in the back country? That kind of stuff.

I'm definitely of the frame of thought that the official trailer will be cinematic. I wouldn't expect anything less!

The driving has been corrected according to Dan Houser. More like a racing game. Cars are more ground to the road. I always felt driving in GTA IV, which was cool, was a lot like driving on ice at times. Still, amazing car physics.

Yeah we may see that.

rockstar doesn't like buying licenses i suppose

What actual car manufacturer would want their cars in a GTA game, even if Rockstar was open to that lol. You'd sooner find actual gun manufacturers having their weapons appear in-game than you would cars.

That looks really weird... With the realistic shading, it looks almost as if it's drawn on top of a photograph, but with black ink lines applied. I personally prefer the older, flat shaded or unshaded art from the GTA III era games:

It's not bad art by any means, but I just prefer the art (and the games in general) to be less realistic. Definitely a step in that direction from GTA IV, though.

I know they did use a model for the Vinewood girl in San Andreas. Not sure if they still do that. I have a feeling they do do to the ridiculous detail.

R* has never used licensed cars. Probably for the cost, but also because of the car companies. If I'm not mistaken, they're usually a little squeamish about their cars being in games with vehicle damage. Or in GTA's case, games where you can pick up hookers and run over police in their cars :lol

Driving is being changed. Housers weren't satisfied with it and apparently they have people from the Midnight Club franchise on board to help them with it.

Yeah, I don't think we'll get much for GTA V. They've done the gameplay series stuff for their last few non-GTA games, but I think maybe because those are potentially harder sells than a new GTA. With V, every trailer they put out gets like 30 million views, despite having no true gameplay. They're keeping it mostly under wraps.

I remember not even knowing what the HUD would look like for GTA IV until I saw a stream the night before it came out.

Guys, I think that dog is going to die.

Even worse, it'll be a named character :(
I hope not =[ he is a named character, though. Peep the name tag.

In some major ways, I hope it stays the same! I loved the driving, although it's difficult to explain why- I think it has to do with feeling like the physics were at work. I love coming back to the game, and picking up the driving after a long period of time. It felt like there was some mastery / learning curve to maneuver the vehicles. And the weightiness of each unique vehicle still feels substantial to me.

I have never heard a jet ski called this before...

Well. I might be a little confused about the distinction of the terms. Where I come from, a water scooter has a seat, a jet ski don't. So that was my assumption.

Nevertheless, it will be awesome ;)

After the gta 4 fiasco (at least for me), unless they do gameplay trailers like those of RDR, i'm not sold at all.

Why change the box art when that kind of style is familiar to millions of people around the globe? When people come into stores and see that box art basically pushed into their face it will grab their attention.

If it means they keep the same style box art so we don't get another blue and orange stereotypical box art I'm all for it.

I could see a PC version announced with a next-gen version. Wishful thinking.

I think that would make a lot of sense. R* wont let the possibility to sell us the game twice pass by.

I expect PS4/720 versions alongside the PC version sometime in late 2014.

And I will buy it again of course...

9/10 for me. Not from a design or legacy perspective but just cos, dammit, playing a GTA has always felt like an event.

Hope it lives up to my hype. And hope there's a Durango/PS4 version.

Lazlow is actually a full time employee for Rockstar now, which is funny to think about considering how he started out.

He helped direct voice actors in Max Payne 3, wrote pedestrian dialogue, and co-wrote the in-game TV shows with Dan Houser. He even did pedestrian dialogue and radio stuff for L.A. Noire.

I'm guessing he'll have something on the talk radio station in V, work on all the radio ads and imaging with Houser, and probably work on other in-game media like TV and internet.
