GTA V's gangs voiced by real gang members

So you guys will play/love a game about stealing, killing, and gangs but you draw the line if they collaborate with people that it's based off of...

I have no problem with any of this. Good stuff R*

Imagine being on the lowest Rockstar career rung (Junior Tester?) and finding out how much guys fresh out of prison or soon headed there were paid for their vital services.
Stop thinking about the feelings of beta testers. They are not real persons and they don't have real feelings or emotions. You are humanizing them and that's a mistake!

I don't understand why ppl would have a problem with this. If nothing else it gives the gang members something to do other than being on the streets doing something negative.

I would rather they not get rewarded with work due to the fact that they were criminals.

I support any action that allows people participating in illicit activities to get legitimate work. If there is a job, like this one, that a gang member would be best at, I think it's a good thing for them to be able to do it.

It isn't a reward for being a criminal, it's an alternative way for them to get money.

Yeah that last part I agree with (well I agree with all of it but especially that last one). It's not like The Wire advertised that they had prior criminals from Baltimore playing some roles. There's no reason to make this part of your marketing campaign.

I blame it on Lazlow though, sometimes he's a cool dude, but sometimes he comes off as a bit of a tool.

I don't see why this would cause outrage. Rockstar aren't paying criminals to commit crimes, they're paying them to talk into a microphone. If anything, this is a good thing for all sides.
Rockstar get the benefit of an authentic take on the world they want to create, and the gang members get paid to do some legitimate work.
^^

An interview with one the creators of a game is not really marketing in my eyes. And the way he talks in the audio interview that no ones listened to makes him seem genuine and not bragging about it at all.

what's this about??

They hired the guy to find the content owner of the song, so they could get his/her permission to use it.

Haven't movies been known to do the same thing when it comes to gang members?
Movies/Shows have been consulting and sometimes using real gangster/mafia people in shows/movies for many, many, many years.

This isn't new and it's hilarious some people are upset over it.

Oh man, the moral OUTRAGE is gonna make this a fun thread, I can tell

Play a game where you play as a bank robber, a gangster, and a homicidal maniac in a series called GRAND THEFT AUTO where you run around in an open world causing mayhem and death at the slightest opportunity and engaging in various acts of crimes.

All of a sudden develop a sense of morality when some of the voice actors are actual gang members.

Egh, I dunno about this being real.

It's real that they'd use actual gangsters to check and teach actors how to use the dialogue but...they aren't actors. It still makes a difference, but if they targeted gangsters who proved that they CAN act then okay.

This is definitely kind of shitty...Is it possible they're reformed gang members or something? Paying criminals seems out of line.

Won't stop me from playing though. Morals askew I guess.

People getting out of prison aren't supposed to be considered criminals anymore. If people had to keep the label around their neck for the rest of their lives, what is the point of allowing them to be released?

So these are NPC's that you would see while walking round an area to add ambience.

Not really seeing the problem here.

The NPC street dialogue was always quite funny in GTA:IV

They are used for this specifically because of their actions. They are gang members being given work playing gang members because they are gang members. I see that as a reward. This is not the same as applying for any old job.

Alternatively, your supporting providing alternative job options so people can make something out of their not-so great pasts, or at least show that you can do work that doesn't involve blood/drug money and still get paid.

This, this this this this.

The lack of mercy or empathy towards ex or past gang members is appalling. If someone gets convicted for anything half serious I guess some of Gaf writes those people off forever. Disgusting behavior in this thread.

So for the people offended, would you rather the gang members were out doing gangster shit, sitting at home doing nothing, or in a holding pen?

LMAO, you think these guys are magically just going to stop doing their usual gangster shit?

Rockstar is paying and rewarding these thugs for being such great thugs. If you don't see a problem with that, then you're being very naive. And these guys are probably a lot worse than mere thugs.

Yeah, I'm sure if one these scumbags fresh out of jail came up to your door asking to be your buddy you would welcome them with open arms...

I see it as a job that is better done by a gang member.

Now, if Rockstar went up to gang members and just handed them $200, that would be different.

Yep, I've been drinkin' again.

In the navy!

Mo money, Mo problems!

If we're cool with things like Michael Jackson using real gang members in his Beat It music video (which he did) and The Wire using real gang members in their cast (which they did) then I see no point st getting outraged by this.

Criminals do not always stay criminals.

Unless you force them to like America loves doing, of course.

Kudos to rockstar.

This game sounds so great. I can't wait to immerse myself in it from 12:30am tuesday to 12:30am wednesday.

I have no problem supporting criminals.

Enjoy your beyond reproach morality and lifestyle.
