GTA4 PS3 to get exclusive downloadable content

Of course I'm going to buy it, I didn't think I gave any indication that I wouldn't. Them scamming us isn't going to make the main game any less awesome. I just wanted to let off some steam...which everyone does in a case like this.

The difference is, I personally care about a new area...IF it's big enough and has enough content in it. A new character is just a character...perhaps I only feel that way because I'm not a huge fan of Soul Calibur. I just see more to do in a downloadable episode rather than with a character.

I'll just buy one version as I don't feel like buying a second game just for a few new episodes. However should the episodes end up being quite large, and if the game ever falls cheap (not bloody likely with next gen) I'd possibly pick up a second version pre-owned just to try it out.
 
This isn't scamming or anything. They're just looking out for their investment. Rockstar has had some bad luck last-gen money and scandal-wise and their just trying to make sure money.

Think of it like the blue and red Pokémon-games. Now there is a thought, ey?
 
If the price is fair (~$15?) it's not bad considering they seem to be giving you a whole new city/island + missions

Don't despair and just do what I'm planning to do, any GTAIV fun to be had outside of the GTAIV on your console of choice doesn't exist. Treat anything you hear about extra content or gameplay on that other console as just a myth, like Bigfoot or the Yeti.

Madden is the most important multiplatform franchise.

Halo is the most important exclusive.

And GTA will not lose its importance until they make a bad game.
 
As a man who has played GTA San Andreas to completion 7 separate times, this is excellent news. All hail our new Rockstar overlords. I look forward to providing you with new and interesting ways to take my moneys.

"Important" isn't in any way the same as "best-selling." Madden is probably actually the most important franchise in the broad sense (like when NYT talks about "important books") but in terms of franchises that influence system adoption it's probably pretty low on the list, simply because of EA's long-term intense push for homogenous cross-platform releases.

GTA, by virtue of its both broad and deep appeal looked a few years ago like they were in the best position to play kingmaker for the US territory but recent events have indicated (to me) both that R* aren't interested in using whatever power they have and that said power may not be as significant anymore.

And GTA will not lose its importance until they make a bad game.

Nah. Franchises turn over at the generation mark really frequently, especially if they've produced 3+ entries in a single generation. (Resident Evil is a good example of an absolute must-have title from the 1st 3D gen that was completely irrelevant in influencing system adoption this time around.) GTA hit a higher peak than other franchises and exceeded expectations with GTA:SA so it may have the strength to continue to dominate, but it's also very conceivable that GTA:IV will be disappointing to people with high next-gen expectations and some other unexpected franchise will show up to be the #1-with-a-bullet franchise.

EDIT: My initial soundbite post sounds retarded! :lol I really mean more that (a) this means R* is choosing to avoid giving anybody an advantage (ceding their ability to influence the console race) and (b) that this is kind of a dumb stunt that doesn't really befit a franchise that until now did well enough just on brand recognition and consistent quality rather than (c) ZOMG GTA4 WILL BOMB because obviously it in no way will.

I'd say a game will fail after 3-4 installation not because it's in the same gen but because its design gets tired and people get bored.
In the GTA case here, the design is so expendable and open to evolution that i'd highly doubt it would suffer from the "3+ entries in a gen" disease.
GTA could basically evolve forever until it reach the state of being a sub-reality ala Matrix.

Honestly I've assumed this would be the case ever since the initial announcement. Why would Rockstar want to eat into potential PS3 sales when they could make the game equally attractive on both systems while still giving multiplatform gamers an incentive to get both?

How on earth is Madden important in the same way the New York Times would talk about an important book?? If the New York Times Book Review talks about an important book, I am quite confident they are talking about a book that pushes the literary form forward and is notably inventive or masterful. That's totally different from, say, a top selling mass market paperback thriller, which is much more akin to what Madden is.

Well, ODing on a franchise is a pretty common reason for it to die out. But a new generation also brings all kinds of challenges. For one, we don't know how working on next-gen systems will affect R*'s development. It's also important to note that, for many people, the bar is going to be dramatically raised. If GTAIV comes out and it's only as much of an advance as, say, GTA:SA was, for a lot of people that'll be a disappointment. It's because GTA is so successful and well-loved that it has so much to live up to, and I definitely think it's conceivable that a GTA could be released that's a solid, enjoyable game but which doesn't give people the "next-gen wow" that would cement it as a key franchise of the next generation.

What I meant was that Madden is important in that even if EA closed up tomorrow it would be remembered as a dramatically influential and relevant franchise to the history of video games and one you should be familiar with even if the genre doesn't interest you if you have any interest in video games as a field, but the lesson I have learned from this thread is that I shouldn't use the word "important" and definitely should not try to distinguish the different ways that games can be important from one another. :)

As i said, GTA is having the design potential to stay right up there. It always depends on what Rockstar is doing with it. Many devs lose their vision with their product and/or sometimes they just don't see how far they can push their stuff.
It doesn't change my point anyway, GTA4 will fail if it's not the evolution we need - obviously. There's always a reason why a game fail and it isn't really the odd. When there is a game that makes a series fail you will be able to notice that most of the time it's because they were rehearshing the same crap instead of making the game evolve.

Were you not around during the 16-bit wars? Gensis vs. SNES was the best era, the two machines were very competitive and gamers benefitted.

but new story/missions is still important =(


i just hope they'll release all the content after a while on both systems, like a time exclusive kind of thing.

It's crap but the companies need to do this sort of thing to bait gamers. But the losers are us for sure, since not only are there two different versions, they're both costing us more than the game itself.

I'm sure there will be exceptions, but man, microtransactions FTL.

Yeah, competition is really friggin great right now, isn't it? We have one machine at $400, another at $500/600, last gen tech at $250, two systems with friggin waggle, everybody jumping on the macrorapement scheme, multiple SKUs for individual games, games on competing systems with exclusive content to each system...

Competition is great!

Screw gaming and screw so-called gamers who like the current system.
 
I guess I'm not seeing what the big deal is. If this is true, each version is going to have platform-exclusive downloadable content. Unless the exclusive content for one platform is markedly better than the other, or you have to play both versions in order to see the entire story or something, I don't know what all the fuss is about. The main game is going to be the same in both versions regardless.
