GTTV: Bioshock 2 Debut Gameplay Video

Really? If I had one complaint it would be that there was too much combat. The reason the game worked so well for me was because of all of the creepy, quiet, exploring time. Then BAM! Things jump out or your hear something moving in the distance. I loved that.

Yep that was my favourite parts of the game the quiet exploration while unsettling music played in the background the amount of combat in the latter stages of the game became quite a chore. I loved it when the enemies would turn up infrequently and at random moments i still remember that bit near the beginning of the game when the lights when out and when they came back on some splicers were right in your face.:D

But the first couple of hours were just brilliantly chilling. That also may have to do with the lack of power you had in the early stages halfway though the game i was pretty powerful so that scary edge had been lost from the game.

From the video it looks great love that spark effect but i wonder if being a Big Daddy will make the game less scary.

No, it's a different game. Got a problem with that? I'd have nothing against a good new Deus Ex or System Shock but I still want my Bioshock :P

Well, yes I do. :p

It's more that they had actually started with something more resembling Deus Ex or SS, but decided it was too "cerebral" and not competetive enough as a shooter. And while there are tons of shooters, there are virtually no games like SS anymore.

anyone else notice when the water pours in, the telekinesis thing in the HUD goes away? I guess you can't use a lot of your abilities under water. Fire and guns would make sense, but no telekinesis?

I think that's because the underwater part was completely scripted. Like the initial sequence in Bioshock. Notice that no oxygen meter pops up either.

Didn't they said there was underwater levels?

Maybe you can only use the drill underwater?

Also, when on the water, he/she looks to his left hand. Probably meaning you can't use your powers on underwater levels.

aren't you wearing a diving suit though?
I don't know if swimming/underwater play has been confirmed for Bioshock 2, but that part in the video was scripted for sure.

Maybe I'm wrong, it certainly looked like it was playing out in a scripted fashion. But if there's underwater play in Bisohock 2, then I guess it's safe to assume it wasn't.

There is underwater gameplay in BS2. :) This was confirmed in a (I think it was) Game Informer article.

The voices of Tennenbaum and the Little Sister sound different from the first game. If they couldn't get the same voice actors then it wouldn't be the end of the world, but I thought that the voice actors from Bioshock did a fantastic job, and would like to have them return for the sequel.
I agree with you that Tenebaum does sound different, but that could be due to either the video or the "the moment" presented in the trailer. In the first game, she was almost always talked in a calm voice, but this moment has her frustrated, angry, etc.

The Little Sisters voice alteration could be due to the player being a Big Daddy: you see them differently, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that you would hear them with a different voice.

I'm surprised no one has altered a Bioshock 2 image with rainbows and pastel colors.

I just picked up the original Bioshock on 360 used for 10 bucks. Gonna run through it.

Well, not underwater gameplay exactly. You just walk around underwater, no enemies fight you, it's suppose to be a place where the player can relax.

Well, you still play it ;) Can't wait for those sequences. Something like that should have already been in the first Bioshock.

Looks like Bioshock 1.5. They made the mistake of showing some random gameplay instead of carefully scripted sequences that would have maximum impact on hype. It still should be good though.

Bioshock 2 retains same art style as the first: "OMG it looks like Bioshock. Expansion confirmed!!1"

Bioshock 2 changes art-style from the first: "OMG its lost the charm and uniqueness of the first! Fuck you 2K"

Did you watch the video? They did, it's called the Big Sister, and protecting the Little Sister while she gets Adam.

I love how some people are able to get so much from so little.

How do you guys do it?

How is going with being the original Big Daddy predictable? How is the Big Sister predictable?

You've seen two minutes what is likely to be a ten hour+ game.

Can you name these "so many possibilities?" It wouldn't be BioShock without it being set in Rapture.

Edit:

Um, she DOES. You choose when and where she harvests Adam; it isn't the same as it was in the first game.
Wasn't the little sister jumping on big sister's back? I think I got some info backwards then :lol thanks

I loved the first Bioshock and will love this next one. The more horror elements added the better!

Biased tilt goes towards the awesome Art Deco environ they placed the game in. Coupled with the crazy hamshackled tech for weapons and items...it was a winner in my book day 1.

Yeah, different groups of people have differing opinions. And one can't please everyone. Shocking.

Thing is the last 1/4 of Bioshock felt incrediblely stale. The last thing I want to do is retread the same enviorments with the same powers using the same weapons. I really think a change in atmosphere could have done the game wonders.

Wow, this looks real good. Being a Big Daddy (sans the fishbowl-filter shit) is a huge improvement over Jack in terms of getting into character. It's just more exciting from a visual standpoint, all steampunk with brass rivets, cogs, et al. And Game Informer (I think it was Game Informer) said you can see your whole body when you look down now. That'll help remedy the feeling of playing a disembodied hand.

From a gameplay standpoint, dual-wielding plasmids and weapons is a logical step forward, and a fun one; using one hand to immolate foes while firing magnum rounds in the other should make battles twice as hectic. The drill is awesome by default, and that dash attack adds some real physicality to battles. Again, I just love the whole Big Daddy concept; illuminating dark areas with your searchlight, treading underwater, wielding a multi-function rivet gun, protecting Little Sisters. So cool.

Despite earlier concerns that the Big Sister looked a bit too... penis-y, I have to say she's a strong presence. Nice to see they're using her to create the sort of scripted moments I loved so much in the first game. Seeing Big Sister go all ninja on the glass and flood the room in a slow-mo FWOOOOSH reminded me of the airliner plowing through the corridor in the first BioShock. And this game has the best underwater graphics to date; I just hope you're not slow as molasses walking underwater.

My only real concern is Tennebaum. A compelling character, yes, but I could never understand what the fuck she was saying. I had to always go back and read it to decipher her thick accent. Other than that, the game looks great and Rapture somehow DOESN'T feel stale. Can't wait to see where it takes us this time.

I think the game looks great too, but are you sure that you don't work for 2k Games?

I know you're not used to seeing someone here who's enthusiastic about games and doesn't start hating them months before he plays them. But no, I don't work for 2K Games. I don't think I'd say I thought the Big Sister looked penis-y if I did.

Also:

I'm in the camp that thinks this looks great! Seeing that footage reminded me of how awesome and immersive the atmoshpere of Rapture was, which was what made Bioshock stand out. That clip brought me right back. More of the same? So what, I wouldn't mind that. But do you honestly think the developers would keep it exactly the same? I can't wait to be surprised by the changes they've made on this one.

meh. I'll play it, but I'm more interested to see whatever 2K Boston is working on. This looks like more of the same, and BioShock didn't end on a high note.

How do you get this inference from the small bit of gameplay video we have seen.

The man who was behind the best area in Bioshock is in charge of Bioshock 2, yet BS2 is going to suck because the end of the first game wasn't very good?

I don't understand. Maybe this is why companies only show teasers.

You can only judge a game by the media presented and I don't see how you see that clip and think anything but more of the same.

The reason the end of the first game wasn't good is because the atmosphere, scernarios, and gunplay largely remained the same from the beginning to the end. I really hope they made some drastic changes to the enemy behavior and have more diverse settings.

I think they did advertise it a bit as system shock's spiritual successor... I usually take that as same gameplay, different premises, so getting a different game can be disappointing, but I agree that bioshock is awesome in itself as well :)

I just hope Andrew Ryan factors into the game somehow. I've been called a communist because I strongly disagree with his philosophy -- and indeed I think he's a selfish bastard whose policies made the lower class turn to Atlas and doom Rapture -- but he was one of my favorite parts of the first BioShock, and though that game's story complicates his involvement in the sequel, I'm sure they could find a way to work him in somehow. Rapture is Ryan's legacy; the two are inseparable, part of the same identity. He must be represented somehow.

At the very least we will hopefully find some new audio diaries of his.

Why would anyone other than crazy lolbertarians make fun of you for disagreeing with Andrew Ryan? :lol

Seems to be a logical opinion. You're supposed to hate him.

Looks like BioShock, but that's what I WANT in a sequel. I loved BioShock. I loved the environments. All I can ask from a sequel is more of the environments I loved so much. And that's what I'm getting.

Sign me up for day one! I'm ready to be amazed again. I just hope they have secret stuff better than the broken glass they showed because I want to be amazed like when I played the first game the first time.

I'm sure that the Big Sister breaking the glass isn't the only thing up their sleeve. Don't want to show all your cards at once.

i'm actually thus far extremely impressed with how much they've changed conceptually from the first game. visually it may look similar, but the idea of playing as a big daddy, and instituting a fast menace who is basically hunting you down is a big shift in pace and is a totally different kind of tension from what came prior; ostensibly they've changed the dynamic from you the nimble hunter taking down the big daddies, to you the big daddy being systematically hunted by a much quicker character.

and that's just what we can extrapolate from the very very small amount of footage and minimal information we have about the game. as dax said, i'm sure there are numerous other surprises. it's clear 2k marin has put a lot of thought into how to expand the game and make it feel fresh outside the visual realm, which given the option, i would always prefer.

holy shit I just realised that Bioshock 2 is going to be like Bioshock 1

I'm so fucking hyped now

this honestly isn't sarcasm

Watched the trailer on the show but I don't get HD so I've gotta tune in to the online version. It really looks nothing short of stunning -- I was amazed at just how much content they played too. I expected a much shorter trailer.

BrandNew said:

Seriously, I don't understand it.
I mean the entire game basically tells you that it was a lack of regulation and oversight that lead to the creation of plasmids and the eventual downfall of Rapture.
I think only hardcore libertarians are the only people that would agree with Ryan's philosophy.

Bumping this because I'm a little confused as to why GTTV is not on Gametrailers.com yet. Are we no longer getting an online version of it?

I LOVE the new system in place where your plasmid and gun is always on screen. Feels like the gunplay will be a lot more fluid not having to take the time to switch back and forth between gun and plasmid firing.

Also at that underwater part, I said wow.
