Hopefully the price is a pleasant surprise like the 980ti was although nvidia will pull their founders edition bullshit and drive up the cost of all 1080ti cards

The 980 Ti was actually poorer value than the 780 Ti, comparatively speaking: it carried a $100 premium versus the 980 as opposed to the $50 premium the 780 Ti carried versus the 780.

It also carried much nicer performance delta and increased ram.
I think 980ti stayed relevant much longer than 780ti

However, the 780 was a GK110 chip like the 780 Ti and Titan. As far as I remember, there was a bigger gap between the 980 (GM204) and 980 Ti (GM200) than the 780 and 780 Ti.

Yeah, I need one or two of these to replace my 780 Ti SLI setup, so I can give those cards to my boys.

One of them is rocking a GTX 285...

It was still cheaper than expected vs how expensive the 1080 ended up costing at launch. That was what I was trying to say

Fair point!

Ah, yeah, now that you mention it, I do recall some rumours placing it in the $700 ballpark.

The 980 Ti is relevant today, it's basically a 1070 with 2 GB less VRAM and runs hotter and uses more power. The 980 Ti is still a beast and will remain so for the foreseeable future in any sub-4K resolution.

I swore off SLI.

I have a 980ti SLI setup and 2016 was mostly headaches at first

if 2017 has better SLI support but I'd be able to skip the 1080ti and wait for volta

Do we think a 1080ti will be able to run modern games at 4K 60fps totally maxed settings? Can a Titan X even manage that across the board?

I'm on a GTX 1070 now and it's the sweet spot for 1440p. I'll wait for Volta or Volta Ti to see what they've got to offer there in terms of gaming in 4K.

How long of a gap was there between the 980ti and the 1080gtx? I feels like Volta is right around the corner doesn't it?

Same here. I threw a hybrid kit on it and the thing just tears through every game I throw at it. No real desire to upgrade at all ATM.

I wanted to watercool mine as well to make it joyride during the summer, but mine is the MSI Gaming 6G which is incompatible with most AIO kits

It seems so late in the cycle for this card. Almost a year after the 1070 and 1080 and then most likely we will have new cards coming later in the year.

Are cards of this level reaching fast enough speeds to drive two vr headsets? I know that there are obvious issues with this but being able to run two headsets off one computer would amazing for Virtual tourism.

The timing of this card is terrible. Pascal is near a year old now, and Volta will probably be available on a consumer level in early 2018.
