Guardian Heroes (XBLA, Developed by Treasure) [Update 2: Gameplay Video, 800 Points]

In fact I took some steps away from my PC and those screens look wayyyyyyyyyyy better.

...

Actually, not sure if you're joking, but I did the same and they seem waaayyyy better. Not great, but much better.

Honestly, the filter doesnt look bad if its something we cant change, but the damn huds have to go, and they BETTER not touch the music, voices, or anime intro...

Are there any backbone members on NeoGAF? If so they need to be asked how they keep trying to staple stupid looking life bars onto games that didnt really need that type of an update. Just give us the character head, maybe a smoother looking life/mp bar, and then the gamertag over that. Its not that hard.

Just to compare, this is what the original looks like scaled up to 720p, ratio retained:

Its gotta be right? I mean they wouldnt do the same thing that Ubisoft let happen to Turtles in Time right?

RIGHT?

:(
Fuck, don't remind me of Turtles in Time. Dunno why original version wasn't released. :( At least Guardian Heroes HD isn't some 3D dogshit.

It's GAF. This always happens, a classic game gets announced, gets a shit filter, GAF explodes and later it's revealed you can play with the original settings anyways.
People judging upon all they are given.
Why not include said original setting in a screenshot then? Why have these screenshots be your lead announcement?

That was one of the worst games I've played this generation, and I'm still a huge fan of the SNES version. This can't be anywhere near as bad.

True. That was the biggest let down ever. I mean they even completely butched the music...and surprisingly people tried to defend it.

It wont be. The game looks exactly the same aside from the filter. Backbone never messes with game soundtracks though right? I wonder what the netcode will be like now...

Whats with the art posted? Looks nothing like any characters from Guardian Heroes.

It looks like a watercolor version, but I honestly don't think it looks bad, just very different. Still, I really hope there's an option for keeping the original style.

And with cubic filtering:

The "HD" filter doesn't filter that bad.

Agreed, I don't really understand why companies often go for that with ports of old games. But this doesn't look like a simple filter, it looks completely different. Not the crisp HD remake I was hoping for, but I'll take it *shrugs*

Filtering 2D pixel art using anything other than nearest neighbor has a 100% failure rate.

Without exception.

WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

And people still don't get it with so many pixel art classics destroyed by those abominations.

Either redraw the whole game at 720/1080p or sell it without crappy filters, otherwise DON'T TOUCH IT.

Was it actually confirmed to be Backbone?

This is the most depressing turn I've EVER seen a thread take.. and in such a short time frame.

Well, shoot. Might be time to finally get a 360, unless they change their minds and give this a PSN release too. :lol

To me the SNES port of Turtles in Time is an abomination.

Arcade or no go.

No confirmation yet. Not sure who's doing the port.

They don't have to redraw it.. just rescan the original art to a higher resolution.

But i wouldn't put it past sega that they burned those too.

Huh...actually I dont think it was. I saw someone mention it, and I think everyone assumed it was since the screens had that filter on them.

Taking a second glance at this shot, it doesnt look like a standard filter, since the characters didnt have those pencil shade lines in the original. Waiting for videos now.

Teknoman said:
The filter really doesnt bother me, but that damn hud has to go. Didnt backbone do this same crap to X-Men Arcade?
Yes. I wonder why these studios never treat the HUD with any respect.

I always thought sprites in games were created digitally, not drawn on paper/cels then scanned. Am I wrong?

You know what that new art reminds me of for some reason?

guardian-heroes-cover.jpg

Back in the day, I was this close to not picking up the game (on clearance at Toys R Us no less) because of the cover art.

holy shit ttob got banned

On topic, I can see what they're going for with those new graphics, but... do not want

can't wait for shining force :lol

Holy shit, it looks like someone drew those Guardian Heroes screenshots in MS Paint.

Please tell me that's not what the game is going to look like.

I think it looks alright. At least they put some effort into it instead of just releasing the same thing with a blur filter.

I highly doubt this... at least on 32 bit games...

I remember seeing SFA drawings of the animation, which suggest that they were at least hand drawn first. Dunno about scanned.

Maybe someone can shed light to this.

Man, talk about depressing.

Hope this looks better in motion, at least.

For a game as beloved as this, you'd think they'd actually put a budget behind it.

It is. Not just a normal filter, so i'm hoping it looks great in motion, keeps the original soundtrack, and has good netcode.

No one knows if backbone is involved yet.

well the graphics suck, but it´s still guardian heroes with an online mode. I´m buying it regardless.

Its the initial shock that got most people (myself included). Hopefully a trailer surfaces today...something like this really needs video behind it.

I agree with this. Some games benefit a lot by being in motion.
