Guardian Heroes (XBLA, Developed by Treasure) [Update 2: Gameplay Video, 800 Points]

It is. Not just a normal filter, so i'm hoping it looks great in motion, keeps the original soundtrack, and has good netcode.

No one knows if backbone is involved yet.

I hope it looks better in motion too. Otherwise, I don't see how anyone can look at that and think, "Sweet, let's start making screenshots and put them out for everone to see!".

Doesn't look good :(

Will buy it (day one) if they released PSN version (my Saturn is broken :/).

I'm dying for Treasure PS3 collection on one disk.

Why Treasure hate Sony? Microsoft paying them?

I always thought sprites in games were created digitally, not drawn on paper/cels then scanned. Am I wrong?
It can be one or the other or a combination of the two, there is not just one way of creating 2D graphics.

Woulda preferred This:

Click for What a GH HD SHOULD look like! :(

Oy. But knew not to expect it ^_^ Sub-20 buck ports redrawing all animation frames for 45 + playable characters + BGs? Ugh.

Still though, it's Guardian Heroes! So the Gameplay will 100% be there, as long as the shift to Widescreen + 12 Player battle doesn't destroy that.

Nice.

It doesn't really matter if Backbone is confirmed or not, I doubt it's coming from Treasure and it looks terrible.

Filtering 2D pixel art using anything other than nearest neighbor has a 100% failure rate.

Without exception.

WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

To be fair, pixel aspect ratios were often not 1:1 on older hardware. The good, simple solution is to multiply the original's resolution to the largest integer possible, using nearest neighbor, and then filling the remaining difference with bilinear filtering to get as big of a 4:3 image as you can. That way, you get extremely minimal blur, crisp pixels, proper aspect ratio.

But if they were true ballers with this port, they'd make a realtime filter that looks like this:

Don't even post that beautiful image here. It's just going to make everyone more upset.

This is the first game announcement, which makes my PC/PS3 combo cry.

I've bought all of the Genesis Classics on Steam, Sega. HOOK ME UP FFS!

I'm going to politely disagree and posit that HQ2X (or 3/4X) can look really good on certain games if the art style was "soft" to begin with, like the Kirby series. For anything with truly beautiful pixel art and/or lots of sharp lines, I agree with you 100%.

Holy shit, it looks like someone drew those Guardian Heroes screenshots in MS Paint.

More like Corel Painter.

I remember seeing SFA drawings of the animation, which suggest that they were at least hand drawn first. Dunno about scanned.

Maybe someone can shed light to this.

It depends. Scanned, not very often. Rotoscoped, sometimes.

Its the initial shock that got most people (myself included). Hopefully a trailer surfaces today...something like this really needs video behind it.

Yea I get the shock. It doesn't really look like that much like the original. I think you gotta appreciate what The Behemoth did with Castle Crashers when you consider what is standard practice with these smaller developers working within the genre. In any case, if it's $10 I'll still be there to support Treasure when it comes out.

So, probably XBLA exclusive... in the US? Bizarre.

Edit: PR doesn't mention PSN version though. Bizarre.

I'm guessing it's a mistake.

Speaking of Sega, where's mah Space Channel 5 pt. 2 for PSN/XBLA first? >:(

Modern 2D games sometimes use a variation on rotoscoping where they draw over animated 3D mannequins, correct?

I don't know how often that might be the case, but everything is possible. Hell, even digitized clay.

I believe it was the technique used for the most recent King of Fighters game, but we haven't seen it in too many other places yet.
It's a shame, really. Seems like a pretty easy way to make attractive 2D graphics without breaking the bank.

Holy shit @ the screenshots. Shit reminds me of that awful Double Dragon XBLA arcade port's super shitty "arranged" graphics.

I don't care about seeing it in motion; they're taking one of the all time most demanded classic Japanese games of the 1990s and treating like My First Adventure With Photoshop Filters and MS Paint by Billy, Age 8?

It's like a sick practical joke.

A dream come true as long as the port is handled with integrity. I ADORE this game.

I also want Dragon Force ported to the 360.

Isn't it weird, that SC5: Part 2 is on Steam, but not the consoles?

Sometimes it seems as if Sega just rolls the dice, to determine what platform they'll support next.

I wonder if they'll end up rewriting the script, or mess with character voices...
If i don't hear Zur Pa Iyah say "EN SUDU MAAAAAAAAH!" its not worth my time. I 'm pretty confident a Ps3 version will be revealed.
