GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - Trailer #3

I thought it was an odd choice, but I think it's going to work now. A serious cosmic comic movie would bomb, but Guardians and their humor is going to attract a lot of people. It's still being sold as a fun romp and that's the key. It's not going to be Avenger level success, but it'll be another Marvel favorite.

It's still gonna do well assuming it turns out good quality-wise. It has the potential to break August records, but that's not a guarantee.

Nobody sane is hoping for Avengers numbers. I think it will do well in the Cap/Thor range, if it breaks out it might creep into Ironman numbers. But the fact it is getting made is a win, if you had pitched this movie 5 years ago you would be run out of town on a rail.

Interesting style change for the trailer. Seeing the serious side of the movie with comedy strung in gives me a better feel of what the actual film might be. I do hope that the next trailer goes with the previous two trailers choice of music from Starlord's Walkman however.

"It's so dense, every single image has so many things going on..."

I feel like I'm in the very small minority when I say I have absolutely no desire to see this film. I have no hype, I don't understand said hype, and I feel like excitement is manufactured because it's MCU and not because the comics themselves have a large fan following (and please correct me if I'm wrong, but the title of the comic is only vaguely familiar).

I'm very willing to eat crow on this, though.

It just looks like a clusterfuck of CGI and action to me, and I'm really sorry I seem to be missing something.

I'm soooo convinced that this movie is going to crater like crazy.

I also think it has a good shot at just flat out being a bad movie that deserves to fail.

Not even WS is enough to get me to trust this flick man. The trailers are AWFUL. It just doesn't look interesting at all.

Oh good, it's not just me then.

I'm also with you in that it doesn't look remotely interesting. I find the hype kind of annoying, but I guess I chop that up to me simply not "getting it" and being a cynical prick when it comes to this film. I wish I could further articulate my disdain for these trailers, but I can't. Again, I'm sorry, and nothing against the fans here who are hyped to see it. More power to you.

In 2013 (the bendis run) it was the #1 comic in its debut and has maintained sales.

Not to mention the fact GoTG merchandise before the movie is moving like crazy

The comic doesn't have a particularly large fan following though, but it's really good. Why don't you prove yourself wrong by reading it then?
Or does your cynicism peaked out with this trailer?

I am expecting Thor/Cap type numbers. $200m domestic, $500m worldwide total by the end. Anything more than that is wishful thinking.

But who knows, it could be huge. I expected Avengers to do well (like Iron Man numbers), but not THAT well. Those opening weekend numbers were insane. Especially because nobody seemed to think it would be anywhere near that.

The 2008 comic run by Abnett and Lanning is one of the best comics I've ever read. It's just a great story with great characters. It's a fun adventure that also has serious moments and is incredibly memorable. It is basically a new Star Wars, but with a completely different universe.

It's hard to discern much at all from the trailers, but one thing is very clear. The movie is directly inspired by that amazing comic run. Maybe the movie won't be good, but I have faith it will be because of that run. I also have faith because James Gunn read and is a fan of that run, and based on his past works he knows the kind of tone that this comic played to its strength.

I can see why it's not easy to "get" it from the trailers, but the final product is hopefully going to show why people are hyped. Even still, while it is not completely apparent the trailers do still feature teases at all of the elements that make it so great.

If you need to be convinced, read the comic run.

Such a delicious thread.

Oh I don't doubt the QUALITY of the comic, I doubt that it has the fanfare to back it as a big film property. I'm always looking for good comics to read, so I'm open to suggestions for the best/classic collected editions of GoTG.

The quality of the comic, however, doesn't necessarily mean it will translate well to film. To me, the film looks like pure spectacle, (as has been the case with a lot of MCU films). I sincerely have failed to understand what's so good about these trailers, and this latest one is absolutely awful in that it serves to confirm what I already knew the film would be about:

Galaxy is threatened by all-encompassing evil.

Queue a ragtag team of anti-heroes doing a lot of amusing shit in an attempt to get along and work together.

Queue an insane amount of over-the-top Star Wars-styled action, mostly driven by CGI.

Rinse and repeat until bad guys are dead and said team proves themselves in a crowd-pleasing manner.

It's pure formula, and I'm betting it will very rarely stop to take the time to develop any meaningful characters/plot that I (personally) would find interesting.

This is why I welcomed the breath of fresh air that was The Winter Soldier and X-Men DOFP (more the latter than the former). They knew they were about SOMETHING and took the time do give their stories some breathing room.

This looks to be another popcorn flick, with absolutely nothing going for it outside of the spectacle. And that's totally cool if you dig that...but I'm a little sick of the CGI-laden bombast.

Yeah, if that particular run is available in trade volumes, I'll pick it up for some reading material when I fly home to Canada (and visit Boston). I'll ask for it at the comic shops.

I don't doubt the comic is good. I just hope the film is a lot more than these trailers (three of them now) appear to be. I'll hold off to see if reviews are good.

My wife LOVES films like Winter Soldier and Days of Future Past, but this cosmic galaxy/sci-fi/Star Wars type genres rarely grab her. The emphasis has to be on character and story and something tangible or relevant to the real-world for her to connect and get interested. If it's just a lot of sci-fi shit blowing up on screen, she's bored to tears. I love me some Star Wars, but I can't justify seeing a film like Guardians of the Galaxy unless the reviews suggest it can offer up something good/interesting for the casual viewer like my wife. I don't like seeing movies without her.

All of the trailers are using mostly the exact same material. The big battle in the sky is obviously the Act 3 climax action scene that all of these movies have, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Apart from that we have see some of a prison break, likely in Act 1. Those two parts plus the Nova Corps talking about the GotG are largely what all of the trailers have contained. That means we still have no idea what most of the movie actually is.

I think it's a good thing the movie is actually not giving the plot away. If you remember, TWS focused on action scenes without giving much of the plot away in trailers also.

I think character development is going to be essential in this movie, but you can't really put that in a trailer. James Gunn and others would not be constantly saying stuff like "Rocket Raccoon is the heart of the movie" if there wasn't something meaningful there.

My hunch is the majority of the action scenes in the film have already been shown in the trailers, and most of the rest of the movie (not shown in the trailers) will be character development and plot. Let's also not forget that TWS was a VERY action packed film.

This is coming out in August:

Also,
Richard Rider
Nova needs his own movie, as does Carol Danvers (Ms. or Captain Marvel). She can act as the bridge between the Avengers & the Guardians, as well as be Marvel's first female-led movie, it's a win-win.

I really like what you're thinking. Somebody must be on the same boat at Marvel Studios.

I hope you're right. I'm not necessarily "rooting for this to fail", just trying to see past my own doubts and look for something to like.

The Rocket Raccoon character, in theory, seems utterly cool. I'd love to see a flick that does an awesome job of establishing that character as more than just a cool "one-liner comic relief" type of deal.

Oh, it was good.

I was on the "TDKR will beat Avengers" train back then, but not on the "Avengers BOMBA!" train.

PhoncipleBone said:
Dark Knight Rises will beat Avengers in box office. That is easy to predict. But people predicting that Avengers will do poorly or less than other Marvel movies is delusional. Avengers will do crazy business. TDKR will just do a bit crazier.

Blast from the past

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=36884792&postcount=159

I foresaw the possibility of the Avengers beating TDKR, but misjudged the reason. I underestimated the Avengers appeal (like everyone else), rather than TDKR specifically disappointing. Which depending on who you ask, did end up happening. Was spot on with the domestic take with TDKR before the Avengers came out and warped everybody's predictions. I think I ended up increasing it to something like 190 OW and 550m final.

China factor didn't even matter since they deliberately screwed the release schedule. Funny to read.

This was a far more generic trailer but I'm kinda happy about that, I can show this one to people and give them a bit more background before introducing them to the other fantastic trailers.

Hiding a major chunk of the plot worked for Winter Soldier, so they're trying to do the same for GotG.

How about this, if it gets a Fresh Tomato, give it a shot. At the very least, read the 2008 run this movie is based on.

Why thank you. I just share a love of not only Richie & Carol, but also both the Guardians & the Avengers. I want nothing but for both to succeed, same for Nova & Ms./Captain Marvel.

Uhh, guys, Da7e from Latino Review is saying that
Nathan Fillion is in fact going to be Nova (Richard Rider) in the post-credits scene for GotG.

He's a bit too old for the role, as I've said in the past, but I'm down for it if he's up to the task, & is up for some time in the gym with Chris Pratt.

If that's true then I pieced that puzzle together quickly :P

Glad I remembered that quote.

Oh the irony.
The guy everyone wanted to play Hal Jordan (& even voiced Hal in some DC animated movies) may be playing Richard Rider. That must be a kick-in-the-balls to DC.

See, when I heard he was going to be in the movie I thought that he could potentially be in that role. But now that Latino Review is saying it, that pretty much means the chances of it being true are almost non-existent.

He is a little older than I pictured for Nova but if it happens I'll be stoked. I want him in the MCU in some form.

To be honest when we first heard he had a role, I thought it would be for some unrecognizable alien character, or maybe the voice of Cosmo.

I'm picturing this scene with Fillion and it's perfect.

To be fair, their GotG scoops have been accurate thus far.

I think he's a bit too old for the role too...that said it's better to be a bit too old than a bit too young. And I still think he's a fine choice for it. So, if the rumour is true...I'm alright with that.

so... older
Nova now for inevitable passing down to kid
Nova, right?

No

I really hope not because current kid Nova is absolutely terrible. I seriously can't think of a single reason why they would go for an annoying kid over an adult superhero.
because they want franchise for kid superhero? the kid Nova film can boost kid nova comic book sales? I was under impression they are pushing for kid Nova. the new disney infinity marvel had kid nova figure isn't it? same with the cartoon spiderman had kid nova in it.

They're also bringing back Richard Rider in the comics in August if you want to go by that metric. Regardless, the movies are definitely the "big business" for Marvel now. Comic sales are honestly unimportant in the face of them. MCU Nova is not going to be Sam Alexander. They're not going to tease Richard in this movie just to not have him be the Nova in his own film.

Kid Nova's comic is selling like arsenic flavoured condoms at the moment, the comic side of Marvel is trying to push him but it really isn't working.

The only reason Kid Nova is a thing is because of Jeph Loeb who was put on the Nova book & was in charge of Marvel Television. Everything else was a domino effect of both of these things.

Assuming LR is right &
Richard Rider is gonna be the Nova of the MCU, they're probably gonna back-peddle on a good chunk of Sam promotion. Right now, they seem to be taking the easy way out & giving Sam his black suit from the comics to set him apart from Richie (see Disney Infinity, who only included Sam to line up with Ultimate Spider-Man). All signs point to Richard & Sam co-existing following Richie's inevitable return. It doesn't help that sales of Sam's comic are crap-tastic right now.

Predicting 85/90 million OW for this.

Word of mouth and dat Raccoon will get the job done.
For reference, how much did Avengers & Winter Soldier make on OW?
