Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Review Thread

Cheat Code Central - 4.9/5

Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- is good. It’s solid and fun and deep and interesting and a pleasure to look at. I have to think really hard to find problems with this game. It doesn’t have a dedicated tournament mode, I guess. Uhhh… yeah that’s about it.

Otherwise it does so many things right. It focuses on teaching people how to play the game. It has a great graphics system that not only looks good, but it gives you clear visual cues as to what is going on. It has tons of different systems to take advantage of that foster high level play. This is the sort of game that we will be picking apart and dissecting in order to find optimal strategies for years. Is it balanced? I don’t know, it’s only been out for a few days on consoles, but Arc System Works has been known to give their games a lot of patch support, and even without that, I get the feeling that tier lists will shift around a lot for this game, as people figure out interesting ways that mechanics interact with each other.

If you are willing to put the work into the game, then Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- is awesome, simply awesome. It’s a game that you will be playing for years to come, not just a flavor of the week. If you are a more casual gamer, Smash Bros. is still likely more your speed, but for the people who are willing to put the time and effort into learning a new fighting game, it is really hard to do better than Guilty Gear Xrd.

Destructoid 9/10

The online modes are fairly robust, with gigantic 64-player lobbies, reserve slots, "winner stays" settings, room passwords, the ability to "quarter up," track records, and the option to train while you wait. You can tweak nearly every option, including individual round settings and spectator options. There can be four battles going on in each lobby, leading to some intense matches going on simultaneously. Cross-Play between the PS3 and PS4 is the cherry on top.

The netcode itself is running smoothly as tested at launch (12/16). The system is server-based, and you can access a number of regions like North America and Asia. Lobbies vary, as Japan is completely maxed with multiple 64-person lobbies, but some North American regions only have a few full rooms. Once you're rocking, though, the good times keep on rolling. You can even queue up a ranked match and do any other activity in the game while waiting.

Guilty Gear is still one of the most badass fighting franchises out there, and Xrd -Sign- honors that legacy. It looks breathtaking, the action is constant and in-your-face, and although the roster is smaller than I'd like, there is a lot of variation to be found once you start digging into the game.

USgamer - 4.5/5

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is a triumphant return for a fighting series that stayed in hiding for an entire generation. Arc System Works has laid a visual salvo with 3D models that animate like 2D art. Combined with the amazing soundtrack and technical gameplay, Xrd is a great fighter. The only thing that holds it back is an obtuse online match system and a relatively lean roster. If you're a guilty Gear fan, it's definitely worth a purchase

ZTGD - 8.5

Still, even with its faults, GGXrd is an excellent foundation for the inevitable half dozen or so iterations to come. While it may prove to be a divisive title in the hardcore community, it’s an excellent point for newcomers to jump in and learn firsthand why the name “Guilty Gear” commands so much respect in the fighting game community.

IGN - 8.5

Guilty Gear Xrd has enough wacky characters and well-crafted tutorials to be interesting for novices, but it’s those of us seeking a challenge that will find the most to love here. The online experience is a little rough, but its wildly diverse cast, and its dynamic, offense-oriented combat system makes Guilty Gear Xrd a triumphant, long-awaited return for this venerable fighting game franchise.

HardcoreGamer - 4/5

Guilty Gear Xrd is back to its challenging but entertaining roots, managing to be a happy medium between casual fighters like Mortal Kombat and longtime competitive titles like Street Fighter. It’s not without it’s plot-related flaws, the result of misplaced ambition, assuredly, but Xrd enters the generation as the go-to change-of-pace fighter that’s nearly impossible to put down once you get started. Thanks to a solid understanding of core fighting game mechanics, Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is the installment fans have been waiting for.

4.9 out of 5? Really?

I've never understood scores that granular--I feel it's contributed to how inflated game scores are compared to other media. Hell, I'm not even a fan of half-points.

That said, though, it's damn near a perfect score so that's just splitting hairs. :p

Good the game is scoring so well. It is one of the best fighters I have played in years.
Edit: I also agree they should release a fighting stick. The DS4 analog feels odd in this game.

Just give it the perfect score you trolls.

How's the netcode guys?

There are a lot of complaints, but super anecdotally I was pleasantly surprised yesterday playing a US member from Europe with 6 frames of delay. Not perfect of course, but the games were very playable.

The limited editions come out on the 23rd. Cannot wait to get my ass kicked by my fellow gaffers on it! Hopefully the netcode stays strong for christmas!

Destructoid says the online is smooth but IGN says it is rough, but I wouldn't trust either of those sites as far as I could shit... damn... this is some knights and knaves shit right here.

lol at "4.9" though.

I've always loved the look of Guilty Gear games but never got round to trying them. Xrd is my first and It's just badass. The character designs, music, aesthetic and most importantly the combat system itself is just slick as fuck.

Looking forward to getting my CronusMAX so that I can play this using stick. Then the grind will official begin. Could end up PS4's best exclusive this year, for me at least.

Can't wait to pick this up. Won't be able to get it immediately but hopefully for Christmas perhaps I'll have it

Will be my first GG game ever, the demo sold me. So much fun and pretty damn deep in all the various different moves you can pull off

I have to imagine that they are stuck on 5/5 insinuating that a game is perfect. I think game critique has been around long enough to know that a perfect score doesn't necessarily mean that the game is perfect.

Nice to see the game getting good reviews, most sites haven't reviewed it yet though, did Aksys not send review copies?!

4.9 out of 5? Really?

What the hell is even the point of using the 5 star/point scale if you are going to use decimal points anyway? that would be a 9.8 out of 10 or 98/100.

Aaanyway. Really enjoying this and still can't get over the graphics. Fucking mind blowing and truly next gen in my eyes. Fucking tricking me into thinking it's 2D high quality anime art. Magicians. Would love to see if this style could translate to a full 3D game (third person style action, something behind the back of the character).

Xrd is not the game you read reviews for.

It's the game you ask longtime God's Gift players how they feel about it.

And the answer is,
they love it. Screw the reviews. Buy the damn game.

I believe they aren't sending out until release date. I held off on asking for the review copy since my flatmate bought the PS3 version from Gamestop last week and I've got a LE on the way next week.

You don't want a CronusMAX. You want a Titan One. Trust me.

Also, I would get a PS4 stick before a converter. There is a problem right now where authentication is dropped every 8 minutes for unlicensed PS4 controllers/converters. The Titan One compensates for this by refreshing the handshake manually by simulating a controller disconnect every 7 minutes, 43 seconds. More details here.

The only way around the problem is to use a PC or laptop as a pass through for your stick so you can leave the Dual Shock 4 plugged in to maintain the authentication.

This is out for PS3/4 right?

Whats the chances it becoming as big as KOF13 in the west and be an EVO main game?

Guilty Gear's always had a love/hate relationship with being on the big screen at Evo. I foresee a good chance of it being there, especially if they're running a lot of Sony systems for tournaments (unconfirmed?)

Also, Daigo
took first place at Evo '03 with Sol Badguy.

Love love loving it so far, but two minor points:

1) The dpad on the DS4 isn't quite as precise as the DS3, so until we get some <$100 sticks my execution is going to be shit.

2) The online setup is a goddamn mess. There needs to be a way to only open lobbies as they fill so that population will be higher, and there needs to be quickmatch for ranked matches at least. Otherwise it's a crapshoot, and the host of a room will often disband it if you come in and start winning.

I gave a 9.5. It's just... Dat game (ass)! I expected something awesome and got something better. Well worth the slightly added cost to import it and have it a bit early. Now I'm wondering if DLC is cross-compatible... It looks like a real possibility, I just have to determine whether it's worth the $3 risk to find out :P

I'm relieved to have found a Baiken replacement though. I was all down in the dumps, feeling how Paulie from the Rocky movies looks.

Game-over.com's review: 90%
Even with some minor flaws, Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN is the best entry in the series to date. It goes further than providing a new coat of paint by completely revamping everything and not just feeling like a minor upgrade to a past formula.

Reminds me of Gamespot's review of Perfect Dark on the N64.
Must have been the frame rate that did it for the reviewer. ;p

Good hope it will help it sell better than in Japan.

Really hoping that the reviews help.

Yes, and while XX has had a rocky relationship with EVO. I see Xrd being on the main stage over P4AU or BBCPE (if it's out by then).

Wish more people got review copies or gave it a chance to review, feel like the game accomplished everything it set out to do and then some.
