Guitar Hero II (360) -- April 3rd

I agree with getting used to shifting your hand. Another piece of advice I would give people to help out with that, try not to grip the neck of the guitar too tightly. Not only will you find that you can move your hand faster with a lighter touch, you'll decrease the amount of cramping in your hand on long play sessions.

Regarding hand-placement, I always just slide my hand back and forth. Some people always start with their fingers on red/yellow/blue/orange and then just stretch their index finger over to green. The only time I do that is when there is a Green-Orange chord.

Shifting really comes in handy when you have a rapid series of changing chords, like Red-Blue Yellow-Orange Red-Blue Yellow-Orange (like in Psychobilly Freakout). Gotta learn to hit both of these with your index and ring finger, and just keep sliding back and forth to hit them in the series.

I'm confused now. Don't you just shift your hand one step down to reach orange (green is free at this moment) and the shift it back to the starting position (orange is free)?

Yeah that's what I meant.

Anyway, beat Woman on hard and just rolled through career till the 6th tier (3-starring everything. not awesome or anything, but I still beat it). Woman is really misplaced down at tier 2.

This game should come with a huge Surgeon General warning on it:
DANGER! playing this game may cause you start humming "Carry On My Wayward Son" in public, thus losing forever any credibility or respect you may had. Plus Kansas can cause birth defects or something.

I also finally tried a bass track.
Man, this game is like a life lesson for aspiring musicians:
Practice hard on your guitar so you don't end up a bass player, this shit is boring.

I was the first to buy this game at my job and everyone was making fun of me for randomly singing that song. Then, more and more fellow employees purchased GHII and they are singing along with me. I don't think we'll ever get that song out of our head.

The argument was made yesterday. After playing Possum Kingdom and Life Wasted back to back (two of my favorite bands in real life) I firmly believe that every song should be from master tapes. No more covers. Covers are only ok when you aren't well versed in a song. But listening to covers of songs I know really well is just painful.

Woo! I finally beat freebird on hard today and 5 starred Possum Kingdom. not much compared to other people but accomplishments for me.

Just about anything from their first album.

Make it happen.

This was rumored way before part II came out on PS2. I always figured it'd pretty much have to be "Wonder Boy" since theres significantly less swearing in it than everything else by the D.

If they ever added Wonderboy, mark my words, bookmark this post, w/e... I will not only buy 5 copies of the game, but also run completely naked down my neighborhood with a billboard that says: "I'm totally gay for Red Octane's love juice all over me."

Woman is the one I'm stuck on now.

Rule of Thumb regarding hand position when an Orange button shows up:
when an orange note shows up, most likely, about %95 of the FOLLOWING notes will be in that position for that bar. Shift your whole hand down one note from your index finger on Green to Red. Use your pinky and think of the Orange note as the new Blue note.

However, try to stay away from doing trills (fast hammer on/pull offs) with your pinky/ring finger on the ORANGE note. That will tire your pinky out. Instead use your Index/Middle finger.

I just 3-starred GH2 on medium. The second to last song is pretty cool, when they start shouting for
Freebird
. I have the live recording of that one. Pretty cool.

I don't think I'll ever manage 'hard'. But then again I never though I'd score 1mil on Geometry Wars. I'll focus now on 5 starring easy and medium. That'll be hard enough.

Yeah, it's a hard song.

What I did was pretty cheap, but at the long guitar solo part (called A, B and C in practise mode), just focus on two notes of every 3 note long HO or PO.

It starts with a long string of blue yellow red - blue yellow red - blue yellow red - yellow. In this case I only played blue yellow - blue yellow - blue yellow - yellow. It gives you a lot more breathing space to get only 2 of the 3 notes. Your Rock meter will decrease using this method, so its vital that you enter the solo with the rockmeter in green or deep in yellow. There are some more points where you need to find a balance in which notes you can hit and which notes you can deliberately skip. I activated my star power for the Guitar Solo C (check practise what part I mean, basically solo A and C are the hardest of the three).

Also, this is assuming you can get through the rest of the song without any problems. You should have star power at the beginning of Guitar Solo A, elsewise you're pretty much screwed.

What are good song recommendations to try to get the really high point total achievements? (fine with 100k, 200k... but the higher ones i don't seem to get anywhere near)

Star Power when you have 4x and near a part with a big solo.

Woo just 5 starred all the easy songs and moved onto normal...and preceeded to struggle with trying to hit that extra note! :lol

Although playing easy has helped, as I have now 5 starred 3 of the 4 songs right now on medium already once I got used to hitting that 4th note. I have the pacing of the songs down.

you have to get used to playing with your pinky on medium difficulty. Once you are able to complete the mode you will have no problem completing those songs. What I do have a problem with are going from 1,3 to 2,4 long notes. I haven't been able to do that fast enough.

I'm doing pretty crappy on medium difficulty. Able to complete the songs with the help of star power but only getting 3 stars on the songs and around 75-80% notes hit. That extra note to hit is killing me...

Should I be sliding my hand up and down or try to hit that note with my pinky finger?

Oh, some of these songs have me using my middle finger quite a bit, don't you worry.

On medium difficulty, you shouldn't be sliding your hand at all. Some songs you may have to but you shouldn't slide your hand just to hit the 4th fret button. I've never played on medium before though so I'm not sure how the note charts look like. Practice using your pinky now

Get that pinky loose, on medium it's all about the pinky, on hard there starts the shifting.

There are a few songs on medium that I've wound up sliding my hand for, but not to use the orange button yet. On songs that have those red/blue notes, I noticed that I've started to slide my index/middle finger down to play it similar to a green/yellow in the normal position, then move it back up quickly. I don't know if it's the right way to do it, but it may well prepare me for hard mode.

Finally finished the game on medium. Wow at the last few songs, some of these were really difficult. First time I want into the flashing red zone, and first time I failed a song. I didn't get why the disclaimer before freebird was so long after the first few minutes, but then I got it and it was a quite painful experience. Thankfully I managed to clear it on my first trial.
I'm loving the game, but I don't know if the hard mode experience won't just be much too frustrating for me. My hand coordination is really bad so once the notes start getting too quick I simply can't play them even if my brain registers them correctly. It's really annoying. I guess I'll keep playing on medium and hope I will get better.
The only thing that I disliked in the game is that the sound you do when you play the wrong note is always the same. I wish it had been closer to what it would have been with that guitar and effect at least. As it is it's distracting and somewhat kills the rhythm. It's more nitpicking that anything else, but I wanted to say it :)

My hand positioning depends how many times I need to hit that note.

If its a lone orange just stretch out with your pinky and hit it, if its a series of high notes then shift your hand up there for that phrase of the song, then when its a series of low notes get ready to move your hand back down the fretboard.

Theres no 'one' good position, you need to be dynamic and have a sense for whether the song is about to get busy on the low notes or the high notes and shift your hand accordingly to be ready for them - get ready to make some really fast and aggressive hand position changes in the later songs/stages!

I also recommend shaving off the ridge on the yellow button, as the songs get faster it'll really start hurting the tips of any fingers you hammer onto it, my fingertips were killing me until I carved it off with a knife.

Here is one thing that we can mostly agree on . . . Guitar Hero 2 for the 360 pwns the April NPD chart. OK . . . they damn Pokemon games will beat it but other than that, Guitar Hero 2 is gonna own.

Man, it is amazing how powerful those Pokemon games are . . . they must be on a whole completely new generation of kids. My Nephew that was obsessed with Pokemon now finds it to be childish. (Apologies to those older folks who play Pokemon . . . they are quality games, but they are mostly played by kids.)

Well they don't have any Tenacious D (yet?) but you gotta appreciate Spinal Effing Tap (Tonight We're gonna Rock you)! I'd love to see Big Bottom added.

Guitar Hero 2 is #8 for the week for XBL activity. Not bad for a game that costs nearly $100
Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (UU’s)
1 Gears of War
2 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
3 Call Of Duty 3
4 GRAW 2
5 Crackdown
6 Oblivion
7 Castlevania: SOTN
8 Guitar Hero II
9 Worms
10 Pro Evolution Soccer 6

Actually, that if amazing considering that the game has no online component! It has leaderboards . . . and eventually online content, but other that, it has no online play component. How is it up there at all?

This list measures the games played while people are logged into XBL. See how Oblivion is up there? It's not a measure of Multplayer Experiences.

They really need to say that at the top of every list, because it always comes up.

I think it measures based just on whether you're logged into Live even when you're just playing single player in a game. Still impressive though, the game is going to have a huge sales month.

You are logged on xbox live even if theres no online component...

anyways, how come this topic isnt sticky yet ? when Stalker has been sticky for like 1 month now.

Because I love it. It happened to Crackdown, it's happening to Guitar Hero II.

Man i'm just terrible at hammer ons and pull-offs, im stuck on woman on hard. I've got medium completed at 5 stars for every song but I just can't pull this one off.

I haven't been playing enough . . . but can you really do hammer-ons? i.e., Can you really just hit the fret button w/o strumming to hit a note?

Play the third tutorial.

Sooooooo pissed right now. Took the 360 and GH2 to a friend's house last night, and wasn't able to hook up XBL. Just now hooked my 360 back up at home and found out that none of the scores I got last night will post to the leaderboards. Why the hell does it have to be connected to XBL all the time for the scores to count? It's showing up on my career save. That's bullshit.

some games do this to prevent cheating

Huh, is that right? I need to play a track online for it to count toward my online career score?

I don't always turn my wireless bridge on, that'd suck if it hasn't counted some of my scores. Is there a way to see which scores of mine it's counting for leaderboard career score?

im still at normal gonna take me a while to get to hard>.> shit SIX gives me a challenge at normal i cant even beat that lol so yeah i wont go to hard just yet-_- awesome game though.

YES! I finally beat "Woman" on hard. I've been stuck on this song for a little while, and I cant believe I finally cleared it. The solo sections are rough, but I got through by just sliding my fingers along the fret buttons(kinda getting the hang of hammer on and off's), and with a little star power help too.

That's what make this game so great I think. When you first get to a hard song and you think how is this even possible, and after a bit of practice you beat it. This game really makes you feel like you accomplished something.

We should get together and play some Rainbow Six Vegas again. We can make Rayne feel bad about not being on the GH2 love train. :lol

Dammit Hangar 18 on expert is ****ing me up. I can get so close to the end, but i **** up getting back on track with star power, or I miss important SP phrases completely.

I beat it on my first try on PS2, why am I having so much trouble this time?

Haha, I got the cops called on me today in my apartment. Apparently both the neighbors below me and above me thought it was too loud... what... are people actually trying to sleep at 5 am? You know what that one phrase is in GH... if you're neighbors tell you you're music is too loud, turn it higher until they move away. :D

Quit your bitchin dude. Guitar Hero is the kind of game where you only get better so if you can't replicate or surpass your current score then it's probably not yours to begin with.
