Guitar Hero II (360) -- April 3rd

I've heard stories of drummers being really good at this game. I don't know how much truth there is to that though.

Haven't heard anything myself. You know, considering how Harmonix seems to take many cheap shots at drummers in Guitar Hero, I wonder if any of that will show up in Rock Band. Maybe they'll juust go after Bass players.

Off Topic: We need to play some more Gears Pedro.

Indeed, I haven't been giving it the attention it deserves recently. I'll keep an eye out for you and yer buddies.

You're kicking my ass in the friends leaderboards. I just got my first 5 star on hard today. I'm on the 3rd tier right now. It doesn't take long to get used to the orange button, but the speed of the songs will still kick my ass.

I would just like to say that I really really really hate Hangar 18 on Expert :(

Although it's pretty funny, because I remember struggling with it on Hard a couple weeks ago (had to play it like 15-20 times to beat it), so I played it on Hard yesterday for the first time since then and blew right past it with little fuss :lol

Still have no idea what the hell I'm gonna do on Expert though. I usually only finish about 75% of the song...I've gotten to 88% once and that's it. Then again, I thought Misirlou and Psychobilly Freakout were gonna be impossible for me to beat on Expert, and I eventually got through those...

I have like 60% of Expert (licenced tracks) 5 starred but man the last 2-3 tiers are virtually impossible for me to 5 star. And Jordon man...I should have beaten it last night but my ****ing star power didn't engage when I needed to.

5 stars on all the Hard songs today. Star power as it turns out is my friend afterall. Also got a nice bump up the Leaderboards for my efforts. Probably drop back down tomorrow. Trooper on Hard almost got me though, I had to practise to learn the repeating 3 quick note sections (Verse 1b for example I think). I have to say I've always hated parts like that where you have to strum up and down really fast because it usually sounds horrible, but won't kill you. You're only missing one out of every 5 notes let's say, but all you hear is PLUNK PLUNK PLUNK PLUNK PLUNK. I gotta say though, once I learned that section in Trooper though, it was soooooo satisfying to play right!

I think I've heard somone at Harmonix say this. When they were testing, actual guitar players had trouble since like you said, they would play notes they weren't supposed to, playing by ear so to speak. Normal video game players would have less trouble because they would depend more on watching the notes reach the bottom, playing by 'sight'.

Not even guitar players, just anyone with any musical inclination. That was the hardest thing for me going through medium. I was like wtf are the notes I should be playing, when I'm hearing 20 and see 1 on the screen. It pissed me off. It's also the reason why I never look right at the notes as they are crossing the thing. I'm usually looking about halfway up the screen at the notes, then just hit them according to where they should fall within the music I'm hearing.

Also, now that I know you just 5-starred Hard in one day, that makes me even more weary to add you.... I guess I'll leave it pending. Then if I feel demoralized one day I may decline lol!

I didn't mind Easy in that regard, coming from Frequency and Amplitude, but some songs on Medium and Hard have you playing really weird notes. I end up playing them the same way you do, and if I try to concentrate on playing them as they pass through the bar at the bottom I end up screwing up.

Finally beat Woman on Hard. Funny thing is I got through the next 5 songs with no problems mostly on the first try. That song is really in the wrong section for hard.

Anyone know if there's are any indications when the next set of downloadable tracks comes out? I hope they release Cowboys from Hell and Texas Flood.

Don't feel like reading the whole thread. Ultimately, how does the 360 version stack up to the PS2 one? How is the 360 guitar in comparison to the PS2 one?

Finally, is there any truth that the recent guitar-fix (what was wrong?) patch bricks 360s?

well I don't know if it was the patch, but I was playing Sweet Child o Mine the other night and mid-song my 360 died. guitar hero killed it. now I'm onto my THIRD 360.

saw a post on IGN boards and they provided a link (although I didn't grab it or go to it since I'm at work)

But here is the rumored next batch of Guitar Hero 2 downloadable content:

Content Pack 1:

“I Love Rock & Roll” - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
“Cochise” - Audioslave

Content Pack 2:
“Godzilla” - Blue Oyster Cult
“I Wanna Be Sedated” - The Ramones
“Sharp Dressed Man” - ZZ Top

Content Pack 3:
“Iron Man” - Black Sabbath
“Take Me Out” - Franz Ferdinand
“Smoke on the Water” - Deep Purple

*whistle*

That's like 8 out of 9 of awesome.

Although, boy, they sort of missed the point, didn't they.

Oh god no, save me someone. Can't resist..... Must kill self....

Cochise and Cowboys from hell. I could have resisted a pack with just one in.

Activision just owned me.

“I Love Rock & Roll” - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
“Sharp Dressed Man” - ZZ Top
“Take Me Out” - Franz Ferdinand

...

I'd buy this but sadly IT DOES NOT EXIST! :(

“I Love Rock & Roll” - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
“Cochise” - Audioslave

HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE!??

Other than "to maximize profit".

No one would buy it other wise.

Split the songs all people want and group them with the crappier ones so that people are forced to buy everything.

What are the sales of the first packs like? I suppose there's no basis for comparison really but I'm hoping that, at a minimum, low sales lead them to rethink that bundling strategy.

It's a somewhat fun song to play, and was a great pick as a first song in GH1, but yet, it's a little strange to bundle it with CfH, one of the hardest songs from the first game.

I was away for a while, how bad are the prices?

Hahaha. More crying from the internets crowd. So bypass one value meal at the fast food joints and you'll have your packs. No need to be cheap. I'm sure people have wasted money on even more useless things without a hesitation.

I'm pretty sure most people just think the bundles are stupid more than anything related to pricing. Not much of an argument for their merit that people may "have wasted money on even more useless things," but I suppose it's one of the best that can be made, considering.

I really like the looks of pack 2 and 3. Smoke on the Water, Godzilla and Sharp Dressed Man were great, Iron man and I Wanna Be Sedated were good too. While Cowboys From Hell is tempting, the other two in that pack I'm kinda meh about.

While I am still hoping for a bunch of other tracks, I really wanna see Unsung in one of these. I miss having a good song with a relentless (but manageable) pace. X-Stream is similar, but I don't like the song as much.

Everyone and their dog is complaining, but I am sure somehow you are the only one who is right on this.

Cowboys From Hell is tempting, but unless the price drops, I'll hold out for More Than a Feeling and Texas Flood.

I'm on the fence about which is stupider, the bundle or the price. Guitar Hero had 30 main tracks (I won't even include the 17 bonus tracks) and you can buy the game for $40. That equates to $1.33 per track. I don't see why eliminating packaging and retailer mark-up should raise the per track price to $2.08. It's just ass rapery. I don't care how many meximelts I have to avoid to get the cock in my ass, there's still a cock in my ass.

I think they should release one mega download pack once they've 360-fied everything and sell it for a moderately fair price... but if they wanted to do that it's something they should have announced by now, since it'll just make it look like they were angling to rip off early buyers even more.

I feel less disappointed now that I got GH1 and 2 on the PS2... wouldn't mind the achievements, but i'm not complaining :)

I doubt he's the only one. Probably more like the 20,000 consumers contributing $18 a pop (making a fairly cool $360,000) are "right" in that they are the ones Activision is listening to.

Unfortunately all interviews point to this being thought through and decided on as their standard approach for DLC from here on out. I'm sure they had a "Bail Out" sales margin and I'm sure it was briskly overcome.

Everyone here has spoken with their wallet, but unfortunately, so have 20,000 other people.

When are these coming out, either way it's going to be entertaining: buy packs for reasonable prices (300 pts ish) or raise my middle finger high up in the air along with everyone else.

People would be stupid to pay 500 pts for these songs when you can get aweome arcade games for 800.

I admit I actually did get one of the packs, so that's 3 songs (luckily there was a pack where I liked all 3 songs). However if they sold all the songs seperately, there are about five I would've grabbed. So their ****-you-over bundling is losing them sales on my end.

I know he is not the only one, but the outcry has been pretty widespread. If they only reduced the price by 30%, I would not be suprised if those numbers went into the 100's of thousands. Just about everyone seems to want these songs so Activision would be wise to reconsider. I doubt selling these to less then 10% of GH2 buyers is what they had in mind with this content.

I'm probably in the target group of people that all you guys hate... I have plenty of disposible income, I don't give a crap too much that the song packs are 500 points a piece, I bought all 3 of the last ones, and I will buy all 3 of these next ones....

Why do I do it?

1. Well for one thing, I hocked my PS2 before 360 came out in order to foot the cost (mostly the not having enough time cost) of the system at launch, so I never got to play the original game. I sat and endured countless testimonials of people saying how much of a godsend this game was and how fun it was, and there wasn't anything I could do about it since I didn't have a PS2 anymore. Sure I could have bought one, but I rate whether to buy a game on about 80% deciding factor of if I have the time to have it in my collection which is decided by working a full time job, spending time with my wife, other people/commitments, etc... Cost isn't too much of a factor for me.

2. I have gotten my wife to play the game with me, have fun at it, and actually have a good time at doing so (all you guys with wives that don't play games can attribute to what I am talking about). Bought the extra guitar, and we have a blast playing it co-op together. The game is great for having people over as well, especially after the 30-pack has been guzzled down. I view this game as a timeless game, one that I will never get rid of (can't say that about 99% of the games I own).

3. This is my only vice on the xbox live marketplace... I have basically withheld from buying almost everything on there (including content for games I love) for the longest time. Only thing I have bought on there has been UMK3 and Geometry wars...

4. I find ways to get microsoft points for cheaper then the MRSP. I buy them with the best buy 5 dollar off coupon, I buy games that are bundled with a free gift card, etc...

The way I see it is that if they were to put guitar hero 1 on the market for 60 bucks as a standalone title, I would go run out and buy it. Actually putting it out in digestible chunks is a lot easier to justify time wise and money wise as well....

I don't suppose we're actually going to see new songs at some point? Forgive me if I'm a little behind on the news.

From the XCN Q&A with the Developers of Guitar Hero II: Ted Lange, Associate Producer, Red Octane:

XCN: What sort of downloadable content there will be? Will there be downloadable content from well known international bands as well, or just the Indies that are completely unknown in other corners of the world?

TL: We plan to keep all fans very happy by giving everyone a little bit of everything they want. So I would say yes to all of those.

XCN: We hear music tracks will be available by Xbox Live Marketplace. Will you group these tracks together in a pack or will you be able to purchase them as individuals. Will they be grouped by music genre?

TL: We are planning on grouping tracks at this point. Most songs can be grouped by genre, but who knows you may see an Indie pack or even a Sitar pack. The possibilities are endless.

XCN. Can you verify the rumour of the halo mjlonir theme being part of GH II's early downloadable content?

TL: I have no idea where that came from or where it started, but Master Chief won't stop calling me. He wants his song in the game so I may just have to include it or else get a needler sicked on me.

Well I've almost beat expert, but Misrolou keeps owning me. Any hints on playing that song fast enough to survive it? By the time I hit ~35% my arm is ready to fall off (I strum up and down).

ditto and the same thing would happen again here. packs 1 and 2 of this list i'd only go for one song in, pack 3 i like all three.

i'm not buying a pack with songs i can't stand in even if i like the other two songs. 170 points a song isn't too bad, 250 is pushing it and 500 isn't excusable... so it's really pot luck with these bundles as to whether or not you like the 3 songs included.

if they bundled by genre it'd be a bit more forgivable.

luck.

At least that's how I beat it, lol. Basically kept replaying it until the rhythm finally "clicked" in my head. Then I just made sure not to mess up on the "easy" parts of the song so I could give myself a cushion for the crazy up and down strumming parts. Then I hoped for the best (and star power)

Actually, I think another thing to keep in mind is that you may not have to strum as fast as it looks on screen, so try adjusting your strumming rhythm. I've noticed that my brain sometimes tells me to strum up and down just as fast as if I was only strumming down...of course the entire purpose of strumming up and down is to avoid that, lol. And since GHII gives you a little bit of leeway when it comes to hitting notes, that may help out of bit.
