Sorry, ran out of characters for the title:

Tokyo-based games publisher GungHo Online Entertainment has announced the formation GungHo Online Entertainment America, its new North American division. GungHo is the parent company of Wild Arms developer Game Arts, Way of the Samurai studio Acquire, and Ragnarok Online creator Gravity. Its North American subsidiary is led by Jun Iwasaki, former president and CEO at Square Enix U.S. and XSEED Games.

GungHo America has confirmed two titles it will bring to U.S. shores:

Dokuro (PSV) – an innovative action puzzle game that uses the front touch screen and rear touch panel to allow players to transform into different forms to play as characters with varying skills and abilities. The game is scheduled for release in October.
Picotto Knights (PSV) – a social action RPG that combines fun ‘beat-em-up’ combat with a revolutionary Ghost system that allows players to form parties by summoning the avatars of friends at any time, even if they are not online. The game is scheduled for release in early 2013.

GungHo will also publish the following titles in Europe:

Ragnarok Odyssey (PSV) – a real-time, action RPG based on the popular Ragnarok Online universe. Scheduled for European release later in 2012.
As part of a global organization, GungHo Online Entertainment America will support GOE-branded games including:
Puzzle & Dragons (iOS) – an intuitive puzzle RPG that has topped the list of highest grossing iOS apps in Japan. Scheduled release in November.
Freak Tower (iOS, Android) – a unique hybrid of tower defense and simulation where the goal is to build the freakiest tower in town. Invite friends from Facebook and Twitter to move in as tenants in the tower and defend it from evil monsters. Scheduled release in November.
Princess Punt 2 (iOS, Android) – a zany, cartoon-style action puzzle RPG for iOS and Android where the princess must kick her trusty knights and weapons at target creatures to destroy them. Scheduled release in early 2013.

“Our quest at GungHo Online Entertainment America is to seek out the best new titles for the rapidly growing community of online gamers, which has always been a passion of mine,” said Jun Iwasaki, President and CEO of GungHo Online Entertainment America. “Our inaugural lineup reflects a strong portfolio of network-oriented games from skilled developers such as Game Arts with plans for more to be announced in the coming months.”

Thank the gods.

Dokuro will be a retail release, correct?

Anyway this is all really good news.

All three of those games look awesome (Picotto Knights looks so kyoot), but when the hell is Ragnarok coming stateside? It's taken forever.

No? They're still publishing Ragnarok Odyssey in North America. They don't have a European branch, so it makes sense that they wouldn't publish it there.

Neither do GungHo...

I missed that they're not publishing Dokuro in Europe. Hopefully a decent European publisher picks that up then because, you know, I'd actually like to play it.

Do we have a basic idea of how much Dokuro will cost? $20 or so? I'll probably just import it if that's the case. I'd rather have the physical release.

I have to imagine they'll be doing digital releases mostly. Wonder how much GungHo nabbing games from GameArts and Acquire will eat into the selection that XSEED and Aksys get to pick from now.

Fantastic news

GunHo has been pretty fantastic in their support for vita. Definitely buying Ragnarok. One of my friends who played the asian version of Dokuro said he absolutely love it.

Like you said, I imagine Gungho will be pretty much digital-only. Any game their subsidiaries make that they feel warrants a retail release will probably go on the auction block for others to look at.

So is this company Sony only or do we have another company that will localize niche games across platforms? :)

I thought XSEED and Rising Star were under the same company?

No to both, actually. They aren't exclusive to any company (there are even 3 iOS games in the OP...), but they more than likely will only localize their own games and not the games from other companies.

They own some known companies like GameArts (Grandia), Acquire (Way of the Samurai) and Gravity (Ragnarok Online), but I think they focus mostly on iOS/social games and MMO stuff.

As wrowa stated there's little reason to believe they'll localize any other company's games other than their own. They are heavily into the social gaming scene as well. As for their support on traditional platforms they haven't published anything on non-Sony hardware in 3 years, though both Acquire and Game Arts have developed games for many different platforms.

In regards to XSEED, they're a subsidiary of MarvelousAQL. Marvelous got ownership of them when XSEED's original parent, AQ Interactive merged with the big M. Rising Star isn't owned by Marvelous, they're a subsidiary of Bergsala. However, Rising Star has publishing agreements with MarvelousAQL for Europe. Interestingly, prior to the AQI merger Marvelous started their own US division called Marvelous USA that localizes games, and still exists to this day. Marvelous USA's work all falls under Rising Star in Europe. It's kind of confusing.

First thing I think when I hear GungHo America formed is I wonder if Michael Keaton will be in charge of a ragtag group of misifts that with some hard work can hit their publishing deadline at the end.

Cool picture :) And yeah, Dokuro is recommended, especially if you like Espace Plan. Dokuro is one of the few games that i imported during the last years. Really glad that i did that, great game.

*big post

Okay, maybe we can emphasize it too much. *wink*

Really, though, the DS, PSP, and Vita have had quite a few, what do you call them, escort games? Escort-where-the-player-is-the-hand-of-God-games? This is definitely the best.
I still have to play The Magic Obelisk/Shadow Walker and it side-by-side to figure out which I like better, but my impulse is this.

What happened with The Magic Obelisk anyway, was it withdrawn from WiiWare? I bought it on my jp Wii. I hope I can transfer it to a Wii U later in 2012.

Don't know how I missed this. I'm always down for more RPG specialized publishing companies. I'm excited for Picotto Knights. :D

Their logo is hideous though.

It's definitely in my wishlist... as soon as I get a Vita... It will be one of my first purchases!
