Gurren Lagann isn't really doing it for me

GIOLON, LET'S SEE YOU GRIT THOSE TEETH!

But yeah, it really picks up after episode 7/8. Also I'm with everyone who says the fan service is too much, but Gurren Lagann is still 10/10 in my book.

Edit: Both the first and second half are great, but the last few episodes in the second half of the show are some of my favorite animation moments of all time.

I liked the second half way more than the first. Looking past the fanservice both Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill are really good, it's kinda silly to compare the two.

Alright folks, here we go. I'm about to embark on Episode 7 & 8 (at least).

I watched Ep 6 last night and it was pretty similar to Episode 4...

Yeah ep 6 isn't great either (it's the one ep I remember actively disliking on the first watch), the lower-quality filler really ends there if memory serves. I'm a little ahead of you in my rewatch.

To be fair, he doesn't exactly have a lot of competition in that regard...

Kittan is fantastic. Rossiu is well developed. Viral has some legit development and an interesting arc. Genome is great and gives a lot of really good insight into the past of the universe. Leeron proves to be more than just comic relief. Gimi and Darry are pretty solid.
I'd say the cast of GL is actually pretty legit, especially when you compare them to most mech anime casts.

The only one I'll agree on being well developed is Rossiu and maybe Viral.

I honestly don't remember much about everybody else. The rest of them seemed pretty one note. I remember Kittan being hot blooded only for the sake of being hot blooded and I didn't really see Genome as much of a character past part 1 since they pretty much took his knowledge/memories while leaving his personality behind (and it just feels weird to me to refer to something like that as the same character). Even then he was just Mr. Exposition until the last few episodes anyway.

Yeah Leeron was more than comic relief but he never moved past being that smart tech guy either (and he settled into role pretty quickly in the series) and Gimi and Darry seemed to be pretty comfortably pigeonholed into their role of being the younger generation characters and that's it.

Not sure what to say about them being the most legit mech cast because mech genre is a genre I honestly have very little experience of.

It's certainly not the most legit cast ever, but a lot of people tend to forget the smaller characters that actually bring a lot to the table because of how overly crazy big Simon and Kamina are in comparison.

The show got boring as hell after episode 8 and even worse when they introduced Nia. I stopped in episode 17 because the second half of the show is super uninteresting.
Kamina
was the only reason to watch it so when
he died
and we were left with shitty
Simon
, it just wasn't the same.

The show is fantastic leading up to episode 8. After episode 8 there's a shocking moment that really kills the momentum of the show.

Kamina is too damn much. I can handle over-the-top and dumb but he grated on me so hard after just a few episodes that I gave up on it.

I have no idea why I can handle stuff like Gravion and not this.

You should watch Panty and Stocking OP. Then watch it again with the English dub

...If you don't like GL, I don't see how you'd be able to stand P&S or Kill La Kill.

But I'm biased, I loved GL and enjoyed KLK and I fucking HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE Panty and Stocking. Though P&S is one of those shows that is dramatically better once you hear it in your native language, it makes the stupidity of the jokes easier to swallow.

The English dub team for the Panty and Stocking localization had to have a blast dubbing that show.

As others have said, the show changes a lot pretty early on around episode 8. I also found Kamina to be incredibly annoying (he alone made me almost stop watching), but he's much different by the time you get to episode 8.

I hate when people say "give it until episode X," but this is one of the only times where I can get behind that statement. I guess it's another question as to whether or not that's a good way to tell a story, but that's definitely the case with this show.

As much as I like this show, I can't say I really remember individual episodes very clearly apart from a few moments (like combining).
Even later on, I remember feeling like it dragged when it hit another spot, but once I hit the parts after that, I realized it was all necessary to make what is literally the greatest* ending in anime history.

*(spoilers)
"Greatest" in this context being used to mean "largest".

This is how I feel about it..I even stopped around the same time you did outside of Kamina the rest of the characters and the world itself seemed completely uninteresting.

Kill La Kill is sooooooooooo much better

I watched the entirety of it a year or so back and didn't derive any enjoyment out of it. So don't worry OP if you think it sucks, there's a minority that agrees with you.

Though Gainax and NeoGainax never did it for me, Evangelion aside.

As much as I love TTGL, the tv series is kinda a slough to get through as the pacing and some of the character development was a bit of a drag. That said, episode 8 is when things change so don't give up on the series just yet.

Personally, I found that both TTGL movies solved most of my issues with pacing and I actually prefer watching the movies over the tv episodes.

Waiting for OP's reaction to ep.8

Come on, work your Magic GL.

Honestly i feel bad for OP if he doesnt latch on after 8

OP, don't let a handful of TTGL fans/KLK haters dissuade you from watching TTGL. In fact, don't listen to the hype, and don't compare it to KLK , because you'll never enjoy it if you do. I can tell that you really enjoyed KLK, and listening to the hype will only set yourself up for intense disappointment.

I wish I could watch Gurren Lagann for the first time again, it really is the G.O.A.T.

Is Kill la Kill finished yet? I was waiting so I could just binge watch it

It is finished. Opinions seem pretty polarized on that one though. Didn't enjoy most of it, but it should be a lot more digestible with a binge watch.

gurren laggan is a masterpiece in my book one of the only animes i rewatch every couple months just to ignite my passions again

KLK was cool. but it didnt go as hard or let itself be as fun or as deep as gurren lagan. it was still ok though.

fanservice feels natural in both shows imo. gurren lagan, coming of boys age ie boners. and KLK coming to terms with yourself, being buck as nude.

I loved the second part much more, a lot of crazy shit and the story was more consistent and no more shitty fillers.

I said I'd report back, and here I am to do that, though it took me a day longer to get there than I expected. Thanks for all the encouragement and also to those in solidarity that didn't like the show! It has been very interesting to see those voices speak up that aren't in agreement with the masses.

I've now seen up through about half of Episode 9, and while I think the show took a positive turn in Episode 7, I still think the show is just alright. Episodes 7, 8, and what I've seen of 9 so far did make the show more interesting. I'm not one of the people that believes you have to
kill off a character
to make a show interesting, but I think they've used it as a pretty decent catalyst for change in Simon, even if it still seems a bit typical so far.

Animation in 7 and 8 was a big improvement from what came before, though in episode 9 so far some of the characters are badly off-model. I guess that budget had to come from somewhere!

At this point, my biggest problem with this show, ignoring all the hype and praise that was heaped upon it, is that it took too long to get here. The first 6-7 episodes should've been completed in three at most. Cut the fat, cut low-quality the filler BS, and drive the story forward. A show that takes 7-8 episodes to get interesting is not a well paced show. If you don't have your audience hooked in the first 2 hours at most let alone merely intrigued in the first hour, you've basically failed.

So, now my opinion overall has improved, and I no longer think it's a "kind of bad show", but a "decent show, with horrible pacing" so far.

I've read all the comments so far, and I want to address the folks worried I'm comparing it too much to Kill La Kill and am not giving Gurren Lagann a fair shake. KLK skyrocketed past nearly all the shows that I've watched over the last 15-ish years of being an anime fan to make it near to if not at the top of my all time favorites list (others hovering around the top include Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Moribito, and Cowboy Bebop). The chances of finding another show that will do that for me is so miniscule-ly small that I don't expect to encounter such a show any time soon.

Here's the thing - as I mentioned before, I tried Gurren Lagann on its own terms years ago when it came out and didn't like it. I quit after one episode because I was bored as shit. I only came back to it because of the enjoyment I got out of KLK, Little Witch Academia, and FLCL that I've seen since I originally tried the show, not that I was expecting it to be exactly the same as any of the above. That enjoyment of Imaishi & Co.'s other works combined with the extremely positive reputation the series continues to hold among most anime fans and the continued comparisons by people in the KLK thread that Gurren Lagann cast KLK in a very poor light. I still absolutely disagree with that assessment, and while it is still an admittedly incomplete reference, I would still take the first quarter run of Kill La Kill over the first quarter run any day - the rest of either show notwithstanding.

In the end, Gurren Lagann has won me over enough to keep watching. I'll of course reserve full judgment until all is said and done. A'ight?

I'll report back again after the next milestone (ep 15 it sounds like?), but in the meantime I'm happy to stick around and continue to discuss the parts I've seen so far.

I stopped watching after that. Yoko is great but not good enough to carry this show.

Yoko is why I stopped watching it. Unnecessary fan-service seriously detracted
from any enjoyment I had. There was no cleverness or class to it, just blatant
fan service. It's why Kill La Kill is a no go as well. GOD DAMN BLATANT
FAN SERVICE.

Animations for both shows are lovely though. Just not enough to outweigh the
bullshit.

It does fall to not being that interesting in the middle of the series again. It's the final 6ish episodes that make the show for people and gives an clearer picture to the slightly more nonsense parts by the end. Then you can watch the movie versions which does the parts people like even better.

This is interpolated obviously, dropped some frames towards the start because of skipping through the video, slight goof.

Man, the animation in the movie version looks crazy good. I've not seen the movies yet because I love the TV series so much I thought the movie would just be a pale shadow. I should probably check them out.

I just have a hard time believing they can condense 27 episodes worth of awesome down into just four hours.

See people! Some plot development that occurs doesn't magically change a show or make peoples opinion about a show differ wildly. Gurren Lagann does what it does from the first scene in the first episode and continues in that vein until the final credits role. It's not a show with some big twist or genre shift that would completely alter your opinion (e.g. Blood C).

Dude, spoilers. OP has only gotten halfway through episode 9, this is episode 11 and beyond stuff. Not to mention it's the movie.

Again saying that TTGL has pacing issues after watching that trainwreck of pacing that is KLK sounds like a poor attempt of trolling.
Now i know that you are not trolling and your words are probably dictated by your bias of liking a lot KLK but it still feels like that.

Still i can't see how can you say that the first episode is boring.
I must rewatch it absolutely btw... it has passed more than a year since the last time, i'm almost ashamed.

How in the hell can you think that posting that is a good idea when just a couple of post before OP said that he only watched 9 episodes?

DONT WATCH THIS OP.

Seriously what the heck dude. Read the thread before replying. Hopefully a mod deletes this post before OP is spoiled.
