Gurren Lagann isn't really doing it for me

Yoko. Presented as a teenage girl. Nia. Presented as a teenage girl.

How is one an underage girl and the other not?

Regardless of what age they're stated to be (which is bullshit, there's a whole industry in Japan of sexualizing pre-pubescent ten year old girls by claiming they're 18), you're being deliberately obtuse if you don't think there is a pretty significant visual age differential between Nia and Yoko. They may be "teenage" canonically but Yoko looks 20 and Nia looks 10.

I've seen plenty of teenage girls of the same age look radically different, even as far as the difference between Yoko and Nia. Nia is actually a fairly realistic representation of a 14 year old girl. If you want to complain about loli characters in general, take it somewhere more general. If you want to complain that Yoko doesn't look 14 and that that's stupid, then do that, but don't call bullshit on Nia being underage and Yoko not.

"If a girl says she's 21, and looks 16, she's 12.
If a girl says she's 26, and looks 26, she's damn near 40."

Both Yoko and Nia look like Teenagers, especially when compared to the other women who are actually of age in that show.

So I just watched this over the past week.......I'm very wishy washy.

I liked the idea. The coming of age story and how much they as a cast have grown through the series, puts them to where they are in the end. The way they up the ante each time feels like it works well, very well.

The problem is the execution. I feel like after the turning point, the show did a good job on character development but started to seriously falter in story. Like it feels like it never exactly reached what they were trying to achieve. I loved the final transformation scene and the whole flashback as well, but it feels like untapped potential. I still enjoyed the ride but the first half was better in execution and the back half was better in character development and the "feels"

You'd probably be more into the two movies than the show.

Just popping into this thread to shamelessly preach about Hunter x Hunter. Likable protagonists, great villains, unpredictable twists, awsome fights. Give it a shot, OP.

This thread reminds me I watched the first 5 eps of Kil La Kil and coming off something like HxH this show was way too shitty to bare I couldn't take anymore of it.

Yoko comes off as at least a 20 or 21 yr old

The turning point I'm talking about was episode 8, but wait how are the movies different? isn't it just the the show but broken up and streamlined?

I could be wrong I'll check it out

I couldn't get into majority of recent Gainax shows. Gurren I somehow stomached, but Panty was pure torture aside from maybe two episodes.

First movie is a retelling of the first half of the show with a LOT of the fat trimmed out, which means more time is spent on the actual story of freeing the human race from the beast men and toppling the beast men empire, while rewriting a few things to make Nia's role more important and to make Simon's shift out of depression a little bit more believable, and sets up the final fight to lead into the second movie, which is a retelling of the second half of the show, which eventually becomes pretty fucking different from the show.

They're both good, but people who hate the first 3rd of the show would love the movies because it does away with everything they didn't like while adding more of what they did.

Panty and Stocking goes after the easy joke too often to really be witty so it sort of fails as a modern comedy. The american dub for it is pretty fucking good though; those people are just having fun. There's more than a couple episodes where it sounds like the entire vocal cast has just finished a bottle of whiskey before doing their lines.

really? I might check it out. I really liked where they were going with the beginning of it up into the end of the Spiral arc. The 2nd half not as high for me but maybe a movie version might do it.

disclaimer: i am a casual anime fan. in that: i don't really view anime as a subgenre of television but a part of television. so for me 'good anime' just means 'good tv.' it's not something i traditionally consume.

really trying to give this show a shot. i'm about 7 episodes in and i'm still not feeling it, but i am interested in continuing watching it.

right now i'm aware of the big stuff that goes down halfway through the show, but i don't know how or why. right now it feels like it's just kind of meandering along until it gets there. it's super charisma man's journey to the stars without much reason behind it.

simon reminds me of renton from eureka 7, except he at least winds up doing things and doesn't whine about everything- he's just very insecure despite wanting to help and eventually pulling through.

yoko might as well not exist. i'm not sure what her contribution to the group is.

i'm watching this after kill la kill, and at least that show had defined goals for the protagonist and a clear antagonist to ground most of the episodes in. it felt very clear and straightforward. there are scenes in gurren lagann where people seem to wind up someplace, and it kind of happens a lot? like i don't know how people get to where they are in some fight scenes. the fanservice here doesn't really seem super satirical like kill la kill, but there is some genuine comedy to come of it, like the bath house episode.

a friend told me there's a part in the show where he thought shit got real, but then he thought that shit really got real in the episode after that, and the series sort of keeps building on itself after that. i'm looking forward to when that happens. right now i'm a little concerned about the rapidly expanding cast that includes two children (that's basically because of eureka 7 though). i feel like there hasn't been much time at all with leeron, yoko, simon, and kamina as a group yet, especially fleshing out the first two. but there's still 20 episodes left so we'll see where it goes.

still intrigued, just not as immediately interesting as i had expected.

Watch the next episode.

Hoo boy, wait until you watch episode 8. I think you'll be surprised with the character development as the show progresses though.

I'm hearing a lot of sentiment along the same lines as I felt while watching the show initially. While my opinion did improve as the show wore on, and certain developments occurred, I still remain baffled as to its fan-favorite status. I don't begrudge anyone who loves it though. In the end it just wasn't the show that spoke to my heart with its insanity.

That show was Kill La Kill.

Every damn time I see this thread title I get mad. Keep watching.
LOL

the second half where it goes off the rails was almost worth the copious amounts of fan service.

ep8 is pretty great tho

Your opinion makes total sense to me too. After subsequent rewatches, there is a lot of stuff that could really tip the scales against the show.

Gurren Lagann is one of the greatest animes of all time. So...yeah, just keep watching. It will get better and it will get AWESOME.

I've watched the first two episodes on Adult Swim the last two weeks. This is the first time I've watched the series and I like what I've seen so far.

TTGL is one of the best modern anime. The whole point of it is that it takes tropes to the extreme. You're not supposed to take it seriously.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish. TTGL spiraled into epic shit by the end. Kill la Kill, as much as I liked it, started out great and then fucking tripped its way off a cliff and into a ravine.

I hated this show with a passion. Then I reached the second act and now it's one of my favorite animes.

Good series but has it's flaws. At least it's not outright terrible like KLK. What a piece of shit series that was, forget about the story and characters even the action scenes failed to leave up to expectations.

It still remained pretty trope-y, but the final third's constant one-upmanship in terms of scale was entertaining right until the end. The sacrifices and bittersweet ending mostly felt like they came naturally to the story instead of so many that I see that felt incredibly forced just b/c it seems that's the preferred Japanese way to end something (as compared to Hollywood's continual happy sappy endings).

I think Gurenn Lagann is one of the trope codifiers out there, it also led to trope critical mass, which makes many tropes so popular these days. It came out in 2007.

The pacing is slower, but actually I prefer the build up, then CoD style where explosions and actions go non-stop like there's no tomorrow.

Kill La Kill is just about nudists.

Best show ever.

As I see it it's supposed to be filled with tropes and generic stuff, and then it takes all of those to ridiculous levels of "over the top". It's a celebration of the shonen and mecha genre.

To me, there are 2 sides to anime:
-One is the more serious side, the more "refined" side if you want to call it that. It often has better writing or a more complex undertone and/or message that it wants to deliver. Look at shows like Monster, or movies like Ghost in the Shell an many others. And sure, it's a more serious side, a more mature one if you want, which often features stories and writing that could actually work perfectly outside of the "anime" medium.
-But there is a whole other side to it, a big one, a crazy one. The side of kids with superpowers, badass giant robots, long speeches and over the top fighting which very often features the underdog that rises above all. It's crazy and I'll be the first one to admit that it's often silly and even a bit dumb, it requires a special taste for such things but, when everything is said and done, it still makes us care.

And Gurren Lagann is a celebration of that second side of anime. It's ridiculous, crazy, WAY over the top and more than a bit silly at times. But unlike so many other shows this one feels fully aware of what it is and it's proud of being like that.
If you want complex characters, deep character progression and an awe inspiring script then you are in the wrong place. If you want to review it as it were the Wire or Breaking Bad then you are basically trying to find Citizen Kane in Back to the future or Die Hard. (Funnily enough, I love those 3 movie, but for very different reasons.)

I made it a bit more than half way in and just did not do it for me either.

Push till the end, don't give up. In fact the entire morale of Gurrenn Lagann is to keep pushing till the end, keep pushing till your body break, keep pushing the wall break, keep pushing till the universe break, keep pushing till the law of physics break, keep pushing till the mind break, keep pushing till the pushing break, keep pushing till the break break.

It has a very "ahh shucks" charm about it that is pushed harder and harder as the series goes on. You would have to let your brain shutoff completely to really enjoy it and im not surprised if the show is passed alot of peoples threshold.

Moat likely said it before in the thread but
First half is more fun to me in "story" and the 2nd is more fun for character direction then the story.

This is one of the GOAT animes for me

Watch the English dub. And if you don't like it then still keep watching. Don't believe in your opinion. Believe in me who believes in you.
