Guys who use two monitors at home

95% of the time I am using my 2nd monitor to watch TV or Blu-rays while gaming or working.

Damn, classy. I prefer having two monitors side-by-side, but still. Damn.

I currently use a computer monitor and a TV, and keep the TV turned off unless I want to watch a show, movie, or play a game.

Having a second monitor is relatively inexpensive and incredibly handy. I use mine all the time. As a matter of fact, I have GAF open on my second monitor while I'm dialed into work patching servers on my primary. Sometimes I use it to run a stream while I'm using the primary monitor, sometimes it's got Spotify open on it.

Honestly, I wish I could add a third.

I added a third for a while, and whilst it was neat having Windows on my center monitor, Linux in a VM on the left and Mac OSX in a VM on the right, I honestly didn't get as much use out of it as I thought I would and sold one and went back to two. I know a lot of people that tried three (for productivity) and had the same experience, so borrow one and try it first before spending money, two might be your sweet spot.

I have thought about getting one of those 21:9 monitors to go above my current that would just be for media viewing.

Do you notice any neck strain from this?

I recently hooked up a spare monitor to work on a business plan while I was watching some television shows and now I don't think I will ever go back. I even remember making fun of my friend for doing it, but now it makes so much sense.

I use it for a lot of things, mostly for watching television while I do other things. But it also helps when doing video editing, picture editing, homework, etc. It's just nice to have more work space. I've been playing a lot of The Last of Us recently, and while waiting for multiplayer games to start I use the second monitor to read neogaf. It's great.

Trust me, get a second monitor. Once you do you will wonder why it took you so long to get one.

Having more than one monitor is a waste of money you only need one.

I do weird computer stuff a lot so I need the extra space. Hex editing, comparing many folders, script writing...

On top of that having a secondary widescreen monitor is good for music playlists and widescreen videos.

Well I'm convinced, but now I face a bigger problem or so it seems... I have this old
Samsung Syncmaster P2350

It is pretty limited when it comes to motion, in any case I would buy another monitor but it won't match... Anyone has not matching monitors?

I think I might wanna go for 1080 (as I usually keep hardware for 2-3 years so don't want to go overboard with res).
Damn now I can't sleep :P
I have two of the same monitors and they still don't match. One of the screens is redder than the other. Fucking dell U2312 piece of crap.

It doesn't matter much. I use to use a setup with two different screen sizes and it was perfectly fine. And like I said earlier, having the same monitor still won't mean you'll have a consistent image.

Some of you watch movies while gaming?
I can even understand watching something that isn't intensive like a sit-com or whatever while doing work that doesn't require too much concentration, but a movie while gaming? What? Why even bother, if you won't be able to immerse yourself in either of the two?

I have one monitor for gaming/computer, and the other is for TV. They aren't right next to each other. One is right in front of me, and the other is far left of my room for TV.

I love sitting through a loading screen with something else to look at. It also helps during those boring segments of games.

3 monitors is much better for gaming, but two is good for putting Netflix on it or something. Really it all boils down to preference.

Two monitors playing the same game is ridiculous though

Nope. I can VPN, work, and in my left monitor take notes. Or I can open Calendar on 1 monitor and use a web browser to plan, copy/paste into Calendar with details.

I kind of want to get a second 46" HDTV for my bedroom's HTPC. Netflix on 1 and browser on the other.

2 is really nice for doing work, but it's really awful for relaxing. Because I'm constantly distracting myself from my own wind down.

Usually spotify/vlc/netflix/mumble are displayed on my secondary monitor while I use the primary for gaming or browsing. I couldn't imagine not having that setup anymore. Recently I've been playing Rust, and having the map or a wiki on the other screen is also very useful.

Three is more than I need though, but something that could be useful if I did any coding on a regular basis.

I often have three screens, but it's between two computers. On the left is my primary laptop with email and Tweetdeck open, plus notes sometimes or systems monitor while I'm programming something. In the center is my main screen, plugged into the primary laptop, on which I do most of my work, gaming and internet browsing. On the left is my Macbook Pro, which basically only serves as a delivery system for iTunes, Twitch and YouTube unless I'm baking an iOS app.

I have four, but two of them are laptops so I guess it doesn't count. Pretty fun having them on a curved table, all I have to do is twist my chair. Feel so future.

I'm spotting a pattern :P

I like having whatever work I'm doing on one, then entertainment on the smaller one. If I really need to focus, then it's nice to have code on one window, and whatever program I'm working on in the other.

No, since I keep the monitors far enough from me I only shift my eyes up, not my head so no strain.

With the exception of stuff like ultra-widescreen gaming, I think supplementary laptops absolutely count. If that screen is just being used for entertainment apps like Netflix, Spotify and YouTube anyway, it doesn't much matter whether it's an extension of the main computer or a separate one. I actually like having a separate laptop for this purpose, as I can count on it never stealing CPU or RAM from my main work. The only thing it ever steals is internet bandwidth, but that's an issue regardless.

I used to use two monitors with the left one being my active project, and right being my side activities like IM, music software, etc.

That said, ever since upgrading to Windows 7, Aero's ability to easily divide windows has brought my back to a single monitor. Having two was a luxury, but I don't feel as disadvantaged with Aero now.

I have two 24" 1200p screens but why stop there? My [jerk-face] boss has three 27" 1440p screens. I want to trump him by getting 4 4K 32" screens but I don't have the desk space for it :(

Asus has a new usb powered 15.6" monitor, no power cable needed. Super light, I plan to get it for my next laptop.

dual monitors is amazing. can't go back now that i've been using it. improves the experience much more than spending that money on performance upgrades or whatever.

The other screen is exclusively for Star Trek: The Next Generation while I play games.

Lol

Really having two is awsome for looking stuff up while gaming.

I only have two at work. I wish I had space to buy a second monitor for my home PC. I hate using only one monitor at home, but I also hate not having an SSD at work. I'm so tempted to upgrade my SSD at home then take my current SSD to work.

i actually bought a second monitor to replace my aging samsung. instead i kept both because dual monitor seriously changes how you do everything. you can surf on one, watch a video on the other. play games on one, have a map or a guide on the other. it's just so much better. i will never go back to one.

I got a second monitor so I could work with UDK/Unreal Engine 3 easier. It eventually became a Cookie Clicker monitor or nothing at all. It's nice being able to surf while playing games on my main screen though (pc on small screen, console on the tv).

Mine don't match either:

Other than never being able to get the tint of the monitors to quite match, it doesn't bother me.

Well now I'm in the search for a good budget (250€ tops) gaming monitor. No idea if the current one is/was good, I just bought it on a whim way back. So what are the numbers I should be paying attention to? Like response time, contrast stuff and such.

I'm sporting

3570 @ 4.4 GHz
GTX 770 Lightning
8 GB RAM

But I don't plan on updating anything in the next 2 years (having another baby soon) so not sure about those 120-144 Hz monitors. Do I have to run games at 120 FPS to notice the diffeerence? What happens if I run them at 30?

I've been out of the loop for such thing for ages now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. The new monitor would be gaming mainly while I have side stuff on the current one.

Well after watching some videos I've noticed that quite a lot of people use two or sometimes even three monitors. That and usual boredom got me thinking if I should perhaps look into getting another one. I mainly surf and game on my PC and I don't think that I would use 2 screens setup for gaming because of increased PC req but other than that what would be a good use for a 2nd screen in home environment? What do you folks use them for?
Thank you your time!

currently have warframe up on 1 monitor and chrome on the other. other configurations i tend to have:

left monitor windows, right monitor linux virtual machine
cubase music production software over two monitors - track arrange left, audio mixer right
IDE of choice left, photoshop &c. on the right.

it's hard to go back once you get used to the real-estate.

Like I mentioned, you can literally have two of the same monitors and the tint may still not match.

So it's not that big of a deal.

Yeah, I also don't have the same two monitors. At least they are almost exactly the same height, but the tint is very different which bothers me a lot..

Also I don't think there is but I'd love to have a quick way of going to the desktop without minimizing the windows on the other screen.

I do the monitor/TV deal, with the TV being used for games or videos while the actual monitor being used for wiki/GAF/TV Tropes/etc. It's glorious. I can never go back.

I had 2 screens when I was still living on my own. WoW on one screen, p0rn on the other.

For prolonged fapping-sessions, I had kinky funky p0rn on one screen and perverted off-turning p0rn on the other.
