I didn't see another thread about this, which is hard to believe because this is extraordinarily dry-heave worthy.

Gwen Stefani has gone beyond off the deep end, and if you though "hollaback girls" was awful, take a listen to this: (I think the link only works in IE... thanks AOL)

How the **** can crap like this be released and be taken seriously?! This song sucks so bad it's unbelievable.

Hard to believe it's the same girl who did "Simple Kind of Life" and "Just a Girl".

I'll give her and Black Eyed Peas credit .. they are the first artists to make music designed to be ringtones and not radio pop songs.

I think the song is great actually. I admit I was taken aback by it at first, but it's really bizaare in a good way.

It's funny that a lot of you claim to be fans of adventurous music, but don't seem to be open t weirdo-pop tunes. This is one of Pharell's more interesting proudctions in a long time...

P.S. "Hollaback Girl" PWNZ YOU.

edit: Reasons why this song is awesome:

1. It samples THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
2. That weird modulating pitch thing in the pre-chorus ("every time...")
3. The monotone/robotic delivery of the verse
4. Yodeling
5. IT SAMPLES THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

I never claimed to be a "fan of adventerous" music, yet that doesn't make me by default a fan of "formulaic generic sounding" music that's churned out in droves. I consider myself open to a wide range of styles and sounds of music.

It's one thing for music to be different, adverterous and interesting, and it's another for it to be complete garbage.

This song is that latter.

Also

ohhhhh it's my shit, it's my shit
ohhhhh it's my shit, it's my shit
ohhhhh it's my shit, it's my shit
ohhhhh it's my shit, it's my shit

this shit is b-a-n-a-n-a-s
this shit is b-a-n-a-n-a-s
this shit is b-a-n-a-n-a-s
this shit is b-a-n-a-n-a-s

hardly makes for a song that PWNZ anything besides a toilet

Yes, the lyrics are dumb... that's 1. besides the point AND 2. part of it's charm. Musically speaking (and this is MUSIC we're speaking about, not poetry), "Hollaback Girl" is awesome.

What? Just because something is "omg different" doesn't mean it automatically. In fact, on many occassions those things suck, as is the case with Hollaback Girl.

Yeah, it's so strange that M.I.A. has had such an influence on the mainstream, seeing as she flopped in both the US and the UK. I hear a very strong M.I.A./Diplo/Switch infuence on a lot of the newest top 40 tracks.

How can something be besides the point if you're going to use it in your second point?!

lyrics are part of a song as a whole, if the words are completely retarded it makes it hard to call a song as a whole good. If I liked a song that was sung in a foreign language, and later I found out the lyrics were something like "doodie peepee" (repeat X100), it would certainly change my opinion of that song to some degree.

Also musically THIS song was crap. Just my personal non-visionary opinion.

Because the lyrics aren't the main focus of the song and if you don't like them they shouldn't really detract frm the song at all. I happen to like them, so they add to it's charm IMO. A lot of my favourite songs have absolutely nonsensical lyrics... and a lot of great lyricists are terrible songwriters.

Why? Why does it matter? To me it doesn't make much of a difference what is being sung about, I care about HOW it's sung. Ilike good lyrics, yes, but they certainly aren't a MUST to make a song enjoyable.

And I'm not going to argue with you about "hollaback girl"'s musical worth... I happen to think the vocal melody is incredibly infectious and the beat/production is genius.

I don't care about lyrics usually, as long as how they sound works with how the music sounds it's ok with me...if that makes any sense. If it doesn't I don't really care I guess, they're my ears.

So after two Gwen Stefani CD's, it's pretty evident who had the talent in No Doubt.

And Eric Stefani. Tom Dumont is a good guitar player, but it seems like he just played some riffs on top of Kanal's bass lines.

Earth to Mainsteam Musicians: There's probably a reason you cut material from your first album. It was likely that it sucked. Just because you have a lot of it doesn't mean you make an album out of it.

Song stinks, despite my enjoyment of the Lonely Goatherd sample.

That's generally how I feel, but I do give some consideration to the words of a song... after all they're not JUST noises the singer is making (for the most part). To me, these lyrics went beyond nonsensical/whimsical/bizarre to just crap.

That's all I came to say

where the hell is that "retards arguing on the internet" pic?!

OMG that's awful. Its going to be a club stable in 3.....2......1..... but seriously, most club staples are garbage anyway. I'd say it fits right in with all that stupid "Sexual Bargaining" crap that's exploding all over the place right now. Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado's new image, Fergie, etc. Songs about girls being tramps go over HUUUUUGE these days. And they go over twice as huge if they have something memorable about them. In this song's case, the idiotic yodeling will be the hook you hear idiots immitating from time to time. :P I think I just threw up a little.....

Okay, I listened to the song... Holy crap, another song that shamelessly promotes her shit clothing line! The musical aspects of this song contain pretty much no redeeming value. I always have an open mind with regards to music, but that was just bad. It sounds like a b-side from her first album... Like some song that had an idea at one point, but was later just jokingly finished and thrown on a single.

So Rich Girl samples "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof, and Wind it Up samples "The Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music.

I predict on her next album she samples from either "Three Little Maids from School" from The Mikado or "Hosanna" from Jesus Christ Superstar. :P

ugh... awful :(

what about the No Doubt days??

WHAT ABOUT IT??

......... but i liked the beat in Hollaback Girl.

Eh hopefully she reconsiders if this will be the first single. I really liked the first album too and this definitely did not hook me.

Oh and

N...
