A rights group in Israel is calling on the country’s medical association to forbid doctors from taking part in a Jerusalem women’s health event scheduled for Tuesday that is closed to women participants.
The event is co-sponsored by one of Israel’s leading - and publicly funded - HMOs, Meuhedet, and the ultra-Orthodox medical institute Yad HaRamah. It is meant to focus on research and innovation in women's health, bringing together medical experts, rabbis, teachers, and experts in Jewish law for dialogue and discussion.

A spokesperson for the conference told the Ynet news website that not only were women absent from the roster of speakers and panelists at the event, but that they were barred from the audience as well.

Uri Regev, director-general of Hiddush, a nonprofit organization that promotes religious freedom and equality, declared that “the existence of this conference proves how crucial it is that the exclusion of women be declared a criminal act. The idea that the Meuhedet HMO and the Shaare Zedek hospital can hold an event in which exclusively male doctors and rabbis gather and discuss women’s medical issues without even one woman doctor is a surreal phenomenon that one hardly believes can exist in what claims to be a Western country.”

After the protest hit the headlines, Meuhedet issued a statement saying that the event was designed to serve its clientele in the Jerusalem area, which includes 250,000 ultra-Orthodox members and was part of its mission to serve all elements of the population and that “the conference was designed for the rabbis of Jerusalem neighborhoods with the goal of strengthening the connection with the communities rabbis and the HMO through open dialogue with doctors who practice gynecology. The goal of the conference is to encourage dialogue with tens of these neighborhood rabbis (with whom the hundreds of thousands of our clients consult) The nature of the event was designed to suit the target audience it is trying to serve.”

I understand the importance of reaching out to the ultra-Orthodox community in the name of public health but there's only so far you can cater to their backwards attitude towards women before it becomes an endorsement.

Pretty much this.

Reminds me of the panel on contraceptives being covered under healthcare Sean Hannity assembled a few years ago.

do tell...?

I would also be interested in an elaboration on this.

I think he's just talking about the last quote.

The purpose is to cater to the super-Orthodox community, and so they end up banning women from the conference so they can actually reach that community.

But, as Jacob said, you can only cater to them so much without it looking like an endorsement. Paraphrasing.

Actual phrasing.

Is it taking place in a treehouse? If so, then I understand completely.

They're taking G.R.O.S.S. literally, I see.

This kinda of news boggles my mind in a way that makes it hard to contribute and be a part of this issue with a level head. There is not one. fucking. argument that would convince me that this is a valid way to conduct any conversation about women and women's issues. Ever. What the actual fuck.

Tips hat to religion. Turns around and strolls merrily away with Darwins origin of species in one hand and Hawkings brief history of time in another.

That's just mind boggling.

Also after the Charlie Hebdo attacks when many European politicians attended the march in Paris there was a photo taken of them and Israeli media photoshopped out all of the women that were in it like Angela Merkel because "it would give wrong ideas to boys and that they must be protected".

I bet these people are going to lose their mind when Hillary Clinton is elected president. They need the American President to provide for Israel, but she's a woman. How would they reconcile this.

It's just ridiculous. A gynecolical conference but women are barred from being in the audience or part of the conference. Who's it for then? Just disgusting how women are still treated in the world.

Probably where it's going to be held.

FTFY.

.......because I know when I need to get a health check up, I goto my local Rabbi, dude is my first port of call.

Haha no seriously, why are there Rabbis and Teachers at this event? How are they connected to a medical convention?

This is aimed at ultraortodox jews, who are a very insular community. These people don't go to regular doctors.

I'd guess this is an attempt to educate them at least a little bit.

I'd guess the authorities are a bit between a rock and hard place here. The setup is completely backwards and you shouldn't cater to that mentality on the other hand that simply means that these people won't get educated about women specific medical issues at all.

That's the magic of it. Behind all the bullshit fundie christians spout in Western countries in their support of Israel, the supposed bastion of civilization in the wild Middle-East, it's just one more country in that region couple of steps away from theocracy, with leaderships ranks filled with fundamentalists, warmongers and extremists. The veneer of money and 'shared' judeo-christian values are a pretty good mask for that.

The way to dispel this kind of ignorance is via education.

They're doing the right thing, short term it may seem like catering to their backwards ideals but the hope would be that the education will plant seeds for long term change.

That only works if the authorities actually intend to change anything though. With Israel it's kind of hard to tell sometimes.

And here I thought the Jewish faith was the cool religion all about sunshine and rainbows... you'd think having a history of oppression would prevent them from exclusion & oppression of their own...

Why even have gynecologist in that region? Can women actually go to a gynecologist Or must they also be excluded from the Dr visit?

Since when has it been considered a Western country...?

The entire African continent is more "West" than Israel...

Somebody done messed up their Geography surely..?

Seriously. I think at this point it might just be better to leave them out in the cold.

They want to discuss women's health but want to exclude women.

So why even bother having a specific conference about it? They obviously think women are second class citizens. Why devote an entire conference to them?

I dunno, man. I don't wan to see their poor women suffer. but - the idea of out-waiting a religion... with these people.. gonna be a while.

and I hate validating such a retrograde worldview in any way. this IS an endorsement effectively.

Culturally, economically and (most importantly) politically western. It's a crappy label, 'developed nation' makes more sense.

I guess for them it is like a veterinary convention that don't allow pets

We don't talk about that, though.
