My dads friend works at Sony and she said that Sony starts counting the guids from zero so you only need 50 ms * 47 million to ban all consoles

You mean this?

Code:
/*
 * Copyright (C) 2000-2011 Sony Corporation
 *
 * All rights reserved
 */

int getRandomNumber()
{
  int seed=0x1234;

  srand(seed);

  return rand();
}

uint128 getConsoleID()
{
  uint128 val=0;

  return val++;
}

So you're saying there's a chance?
NNNNNNNNNGH

This doesn't really qualify as a useful contribution, but the only useful contribution that can be really made to this thread is the knowledge that this is probably bullshit, and if it's not then the only people that can be affected are people who download malicious CFW, and considering the hacker scene doesn't consist entirely of blackhats but it does consist entirely of people who know things about things, any such malicious CFW will be found out very quickly.

It would be incredibly stupid to make a rash generalization on a large group of people with very different motives ("the hackers") based solely on this device if in fact it does exist for multiple reasons.

Your general public are uninformed that there are different factions of hackers. They are the kind of who don't even surf the web much and see them as a waste of time (I know, how insane!). To them all they know is that hackers have been trying to steal their console ID and for all they know, things wouldn't be this way if they hadn't been hacking in the first place. And how would anyone know which hackers support this and which hackers don't?

hey i havent been reading all the posts in the thread since i just got home, but is this for real..?
can i get banned because somebody else unbannes himself

Oh shit first post in new page. Sorry!
You really don't see the word 'smithereens' get enough usage nowadays.

Also: If banning is banned, then only banned will have ability to ban??

there is a chance, hence the word 'can'

1.
to be able to; have the ability, power, or skill to: She can solve the problem easily, I'm sure.
2.
to know how to: He can play chess, although he's not particularly good at it.
3.
to have the power or means to: A dictator can impose his will on the people.
4.
to have the right or qualifications to: He can change whatever he wishes in the script.
5.
may; have permission to: Can I speak to you for a moment?
6.
to have the possibility: A coin can land on either side.

So guess we are going with definition 6 on this one?

Not likely.

They don't have to be informed about anything to know better than to not make rash generalizations. Any group described entirely in lower-case letters is inherently a large one with much variance.

Hackers spreading bullshit like this because a couple of days ago Sony royally fucked them over.

This is indeed a new low, sad twats.

Also, 3 pages? really?

Good luck with that. The word 'hacker' itself has negative connotation so regardless of information or not, the associated image is already negative in the first place.

Let's think of it another way, and assume this is easily doable, and hackers can spoof legitimate console ids and match them up with the correct mac addresses, with 100% success. In that case, I'd think Sony would just stop banning consoles, with no reliable way to distinguish hackers from legitimate users. Why ban consoles, if hackers can easily unban themselves, while unintentional banning of legitimate users will just lead to customer support headaches and possible lawsuits? Of course, PSN will be run amok with hackers and cheaters, but that's the consequence.

If that were to happen like you're describing, the PS3 is done. What's stopping an asshole hacker banning consoles just for kicks and seeing internetz meltdownz?

I hope the NGP is more hack proof than this. The PS3 was pretty secure for years until the leak that led to jailbreak that led to geohotz that led to this. Lessons learned for Sony, with a couple of twists and random numbers, the PS3 probably would've still been safe today.

Hey guys, did you hear that Sony put a rootkit in your PS3?

sure, if you think these are the same exact people, but that's like presuming that everyone with CFW is a pirate, and that everyone on GAF is a sony fanboy.

some hackers opened up the PS3. some hackers might have found a way to ban other people from PSN.

unless those two groups of hackers are the same, you shouldn't, logically, reconsider your opinion of the first group based on the actions of the second.

it's sort of like saying 'egyptians raped a reporter' and then 'egyptians save a reporter from being raped'. we aren't talking about the same egyptians... and neither action says anything about egyptians overall.
I don't particularly buy that analogy. Many of us feared shenanigans such as this would occur due to Hotz' activities. Not all CFW users are pirates, but the creation of the CFW gave an outlet to pirates and other people of questionable morals, which in turn might have detrimental effect on the rest of the PSN community. Judging by this turn of events, the CFW and Hotz supporters have lost their credibility, like Replicant said. In Egypt, no one said that ouster of Mubarak will result in reporters getting raped.

I agree, I think I'd use it more though if I could think of a way to use it independently of the words "blown to"

Just stop using the world "shrapnel" and replace it with smithereens.

If the general public starts getting banned they will be angry with Sony, not hackers. They might not even know that hackers have cracked the PS3.

Sounds like (and probably is) BS. Would've been done already if it was reasonably feasible. And I doubt the timing of stories like these are happening just before the ban wave gets started are just a coincidence.

The first part of the title is right, they can unban theirselves if they know any other consoleId, the second part is wrong, they can't get YOUR consoleId to get you banned.

But you can buy a fresh new PS3 and find it that is banned because someone bought it, got the consoleId and returned it.

hackers can ban and unban at will, based on the OP

You'd think Sony will just let the blame fall on them? Dream on. They'd make a big PR about hackers and how they are the reason why everyone's experience on PSN has been affected.

What I'm trying to say it. Just stop it. You guys hacker are not making it easy for anyone. Yourself, Sony, and most importantly, the innocent people in the firing line. You guys started this. You can stop this.

It's not really a "fresh new" PS3 if somebody already bought it, opened it, installed CFW on it, reverted back to OFW and returned it, is it?

You do make a good point. They could just go get a used system from gamestop. Install cfw get the psid and then use that psid. Then the actual purchaser of the system has a banned console.

I must have misinterpreted your post; I wasn't aware that you were only talking about people who have a limited capacity to think.
