Hair dryer level PS4 systems? Check thermal paste asap!

I recently replaced the thermal paste on my unit. Not really noticing much of a difference, if any, but my oh my was the original paste applied poorly. Probably worse than the pics a few posts up.

Android app: Sound Meter

Closed room - 2nd floor residential apt.
No appliances on: 21dB

Phone microphone facing and touching the back of the system underneath the HDMI input

System on desktop: 33dB

Launch game and in main menu: 57dB (2 minutes)

Launch single player game: 50dB (3 minutes)

Close application: 33dB (7 seconds)

This does get the fans going for sure.

Just for some reference I'm getting a good 49dB playing CoD:AW campaign map Terminus, New Baghdad Iraq (final mission).

Seems reasonable so you get about 50 dB minus the 21 that your space is so 29 dB and right beside the machine. Doesn't sound too bad actually. It's 9 dB above your room noise

Mine is not overly loud but being an old PC enthusiast I'm going to try this as well. I'm going to order some thermal pads, shims and some Artic MX-4.

I want to do a YouTube tutorial as the ones I've watched never covered pads and the overall information/presentation was not to my liking. Just on a testing point of view none of them have been complete. Usually they focus on one thing and never cover results or its just a results video.

cool, looking forward to your results, especially regarding the use of a shim.

Was playing Until Dawn last night, and my PS4 was insanely loud.

It's one of the 20th Anniversary editions...I can tell getting this repaired by Sony is gonna be a pain :(

Yep! Had mine repaired and the actual repair process was amazingly quick, pick up on a Friday, delivered back on a Monday.

BUT getting to that stage took me nearly 2 months. The reason it's a PITA is because Sony head office have to authorise a courier to come collect the 20th Anniversary machines, general repairs the customer has to send them in themselves. This was the stage I seemed to get stuck at until I hit Chris Owen on Twitter and within a few days it was all sorted and collection was arranged.

People in Europe should be wary before you do this.

EU directive 1999/44/EC states that all consumer goods sold within the EU must come with at least a two year warranty. Quote this to Sony if they're bitching at you about warranty, and you should be good.

Really?! I'm in the UK and have a launch unit. I was going to give this thermal paste thing a go but if you reckon I can get away with them repairing for free due to this then I'm all for it.

Good point. I guess this would also count for broken controllers.

Hey guys...
My PS4 is entering in shutting down process randomically...
After that I have to deplug PS4 from power and wait some minutes to turn on again. If I immediately turn it on after the problem, it turns off in minutes again...

Could it be heating problem? (no red light)

thanks

Does it beep before turning off? Does it happen during games mostly? Does it just turn off and that's it or go into rest mode by itself?

It beeps before turning off.
Sometimes it turns off, sometimes it enter in rest mode.
Mostly during games (destiny)

Mine was doing that for 4 moths, it was driving me crazy. Then I did the "knee trick".

The problem occurs because the power brick is out of its place due to some random reason. Just hold your PS4 90 degrees, so the front is facing down and hit it in your knee! After a couple of hits mine worked perfectly because the power brick was finally in the correct place, and this problem never happened again!

lol Are you serious? Hit where?

cool, looking forward to your results, especially regarding the use of a shim.

The shims are probably going to be used for the back mounting bracket. If the PS4 heat sink had a mirror finish I'd try to place it directly on the die but it's not. I don't think you can even lap the PS4 heat sink because it's connected to the heat spreader they are using iirc.

Still waiting to purchase the supplies, need to figure out a way to record with an iPhone 6. A mount would be preferable.

that´s exactly what i was curious about :)
don´t know if the thermal compound would make the shim sticky enough to be placed upside down on the heatsink. and even if it stuck, how to make sure it stayed in the right place.

Went through the motions of sending my ps4 back to sony to see if they would give me a price as I'm out of warranty. £175 for them to repair it. Basically just confirmed me doing this thermal paste replacement this week as no way am I paying £175 for a repair. Little bit more and I could grab a new bloody ps4!

Ok dudes I did the thermal paste replacement today. Oh my god.....

Firstly there was NO thermal paste actually on my APU. It was all pushed around the edges of the square and was solidified.

applied arctic silver 5 thermal paste and even with zero cure time (I'm aware they it has around 200 hour cure time) there was a huge difference. I literally can't even tell my ps4 is on at this point. My fans would ramp up into overdrive within minutes of playing MGSV or Driveclub. I played them both completely muted so all I could hear was my ps4 and it's as quiet as my Xbone now. Barely hear it. If I had the game sound on, I wouldn't be able to hear my ps4 at all.

I had the ps4 on for half hour with no fans ramping up whatsoever. Huge improvement. Feel like I have a brand new PS4. Saved myself £175! Thank you so much for the help and info guys and girls :)

Error log on PS4 : nothing
Tried the "knee trick" lol : problem persists

So I tried to open to re-paste, bought a T9 Torx, but 1 T9 power supply screw is stucked... Tried for 1 hour take that shit off and nothing...

Is it a normal Torx or security Torx? Did you strip the head?

lol, I remeber there was an Amiga issue where the cure was a 2 inch drop!

My PS4 is broken (an issue I can't fix myself). When you phoned did you say about that two year EU thing? Because I phoned yesterday, out of warranty and got a £175 quote too (thats the standard charge no matter whats wrong with your console).

You will likely have to go through the store you pruchased from (in the first instance) as this is who your 'contract' is with, then you can try Sony...but in the end I dare say you will need to get a 3rd party involved.

The other thing (other than warranty) is if the unit has become faulty due in no part to anything you've done outside general use. For example, it's fair to expect a PS4 to last for ~5 years, if it dies within that time it could be argued that it became faulty due to a faulty component and should be repaired FOC.

I went onto Sony Support website. It asks you to type in your serial number. After you do that it shows you if you are in Warranty or not. I bought mine at launch so I knew it was out anyway, and it give you a base price of £175 for repair of the console, no matter what it is. Even if it's truly fucked, that's what you'll get charged for.

Thankfully I opened up my PS4 and did this myself. Saved myself nearly £200 lol.

But as you have a full on broken PS4, you're going to need to cough up £175 :/ Shit really that there was only a 1 year warranty with the ps4. But oh well!

EDIT: My bad you're talking about the EU thing. As the poster above said, you'll have to get int contact with the company you bought the PS4 from.

yeah, you need the security screw I think it's TS9 - there's a small hole in the head

It's TR9. I made that mistake an bought a TT9. Which doesn't have the hole in it. The TT9's are readily available in the UK in places like Wickes, B&Q, Homebase, Wilkos and stuff but I had to buy the TR9 online as I couldn't find the bloody thing anywhere. Ended up grabbing an ifixit set with a bunch of other tools I will probably never use. Neat little toolbox though!

ok...i have fixed about 80 or so ps4 consoles now using the same arctic silver paste swap and every one of them consoles are silent

sony really cheaped out on the design

I am currently looking at ways to add in a larger fan to the exterior which will be silent and assist the shitty design of the console

if i do it right it may be a simple case of swapping the top part of the case for a combined fan and intake cover.....currently trying out a few larger thermaltake silent fans.

if the design is sound i will make the 3d print of the case top available and people simply need to buy the fan which is powered by the usb port

Her fake, forced smile is really bugging me. I'd probably do this out of warranty though.

yeah, wasn't 100% sure of the number...I have one I ordered for my daughters PS4 but I think she's waiting for ear-bleeding levels before letting me loose! lol

do they stay silnet though of a couple months? I've heard reports that they all revert back to being noisey...be interested to see this fan you come up with :)

The screws are pretty cheap

You can actually take a strong flat tip driver or some other toop and break/grind away the center piece

Then any Hex Bit will work lol

I mean hell its out of warranty right? Make it work

The design is sound imo, but the thermal application of the paste is subpar. The clamp mechanism seems odd as it is just using leverage that I would think overtime would lose its strength.

I would have liked to see them use spring screws tbh.

Wow, I remember around launch there were always confusing posts about people with PS4s that were about to take off the runway, and people with PS4s that were dead silent. My launch PS4 is dead silent. I wouldn't know if it was on in the background if it weren't for the white light.

My PS4 works fine, but it's loud and it really bugs me. I sometimes focus on the sound over the games due to my OCD. It's always in the back of my mind.

But I can't justify just going out and buying a new one, and there's no way I'm risking opening it up.

yeah, you need the security screw I think it's TS9 - there's a small hole in the head

You may also be able to use a small flathead screw driver rather than the ts9... simply insert the flat part between two of the grooves... it will only work as long as your screws aren't stripped but it worked for me fine when I did my ps4

I finally got around to ordering the parts and bought a decibel meter from the App Store. Don't have the cash to buy anything fancy.

Taking readings from: MGS GZ title screen, Rocket League (any other suggestions?) via intro video then leading into Tutorial on disassembly, cleaning, reapplying paste and pads, reassembly then finishing up with the same readings in games.

I'll be sure to cover tools used and where I bought everything. (US)

I've a CUH-1116A model and mine is jet levels. Had it for 6 months.

As soon as I hit the year warranty mark I'm ripping it open and re-doing the paste.

Wanted to do it immediately but that's what the warranty's for!

Reposting from metal gear solid 5 thread:

MGSV is what set me over the edge and decided to sort this out.

I did this about a month or so back and it's been whisper quiet for every single game since. The difference was staggering.

Also noticed that when I put my hands on top of the PS4 it's warm, rather than super fucking hot like it was before.

After changing the paste and realising that your PS4's fans shouldn't have to ramp up like they did before I'd seriously consider trying this method. It worked perfectly for me and cost me £5. Rather than the £150 or whatever it was Sony were charging to get it fixed.

Ah so I should try and trade my current one in for the mgs bundle?

There's a 1TB version of the 12xx model too.
To narrow the issue down. 10xx and 11xx models are loud as fuck in games that push it after about 20 min gameplay. Went through four different units, changed thermal paste to improve it, but it was still far too loud even with the big improvement that followed. Sent one back to Sony and the one I got back was just as bad. Worthless cooling solution in combination with poor quality control.

The 12xx model in the same scenarios is quiet. Even after hours. Not inaudible in any way, but pleasantly quiet even without any audio playing from the game. At least if you're sitting a couple of meters away from it.

In short. If you can get a 12xx model. Easily the best one to date.

I got around to reapplying the thermal paste with Arctic MX-4 and it worked wonders on my PS4. I can finally game in peace, before games like MGSV, Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Until Dawn and most graphic heavy games would cause my PS4 to sound like a hair dryer but now it's fine.

I've only encountered one issue after reassembling my console. My eject button does not beep a single time anymore, it always triple beeps whenever I push the button with a disc inside the console. Isn't it only supposed to triple beep when there is no disc inserted and you try to eject?

If someone could help me with a fix for this minor issue I would much appreciate it.

This isn't any harder than applying cooling paste on a GTX 680, right?
I might do it soon, the fans ramping up quite often and blows hot air out.

My eject button stopped working completely after the first open rofl.

Maybe it had been asked already, but are some people confusing fan noise with disc noise?

If I play a new game while some of it is still installing it sounds like a jet taking off but those aren't the fans.
