Hairstyle-age ah fuck this shit!

I know how you feel. I'd like to grow my hair out but the problem is getting it to the point where it doesn't look like shit. Its extremely thick so when I haven't had a cut in a while the sides look all funny.

I'd go and get it shaped up and 2 days later it would look exactly how it did before and I started getting these lines in the side of my hair, I guess where it would part when I'd sleep but it wouldn't go away!

Finally I said fuck it and shaved it all off again.

So how much do you guys pay for your haircuts? I usually never go to any because I don't want to party so much for a hairdo that won't really be that since my hair is so short.I somehow doubt you can do that much with my hair.

In my neighborhood (Washington Heights, NY), I pay $18 for a haircut plus tip (if I feel he did a good job) so about $20 which is a bit too pricey. The average price for a barbershop haircut is $15 but it's increased in my neighborhood. Shape-ups are $7; $10 if you want the barber to shave the mustache (which I think is absurd) plus optional tip.

I haven't taken a buzzed cut (number 1) in about a year myself; I only do it when I'm really tired seeing my hair so long, and run out of haircut ideas. I typically get it buzzed when the weather gets hot. The last haircut I took was a two on the sides and I think a three on top (which has been the haircut that I usually take) plus a shape-up.

I was kind of annoyed by my last visit to the barbershop (which was about two months ago) because I wanted a faux-hawk, but since it's a Dominican barbershop, a lot of the barbers don't know what a faux-hawk is (I showed him a picture of RJ Navarette's avatar). It was only after he finished that he said "Ohh, you mean a mohawk! It'll grow back." *face palm*

I think my hair is long enough to get a Ryan Gosling style cut at this point so I'll think about checking that haircut out (my hair is curly, but not super curly like my brothers' hair). However, I think I'm gonna take a shape-up this week. It doesn't help that I haven't shampooed in over 3 weeks; I've just used conditioner, gel and shape-up my forehead from time to time, as well as shave my facial hair. My hair is oily as a result, but I like it like that.

The pictures of me from the last NYC GAF meet up is what my hair currently looks like. I typically comb it backwards, slap some gel on, and call it my default hair style. If I comb it forwards, it'll just make me look a hobo (my hair looks flat).

What kind of hair do you have?

I have asian hair, and when I wake up, my hair is like a mountain from sleeping on my sides. I have to get my hair wet and gel it. Gatsby is ok but it gets my hair clumped and sometimes isnt strong enough.

My hair is impossible to style.
In high school I always got made fun of for having a "jew fro".
I guess because I'm white and blonde but have hair like a black person. I choose to just wear a hat all the time. This probably was not helpful.

I'm not white and blond, (Arab mixed with a little French, with pretty white skin) and I basically have "black" hair. Grew an Afro back in high school and people thought I was mulatto. Really sucks when you need to look clean-cut and professional for job interviews, etc.

Over the years I've learned that there are only 3 styles that work with my type of hair:

1. short-fade,
2. shaved head
3. #2 or 3 length on the sides, medium length on top and some pomade or lotion to turn that nappy frizzy mess into nice sculpted curls/ringlets.

Currently rocking style #3 but it's a pain in the ass. Gonna switch back to #1 soon.

We have different types of hair bro. My brother has that shitty hair that grows out all poofy, I have pretty thick hair that grows out but falls regularly.

This is my hair-style. I just grew it out and after it got a little past this I just asked for a couple of inches off everywhere. She was smart enough to balance out the potential mullet.

Long at the front / sides, short at the back?

Freshly dark cut Caesar, no chin straps, cleanly shaven, all day every day. Its pretty simple choice for brothers. I mean, there are other choices, but I have a career, its not like I can rock cornrows like I did as a young man.

I hate my hair, it can't do anything, it just grows big but not even into a cool mullet. My hair is incapable of styles, so I've started keeping it close to bald.

Great decision because as a glasses guy, don't have to fuss with sideburn hair or hair near ears. Feel more light and cool and free!

This is a bit like mine, although I keep mine shorter at the sides and brush it to the side a bit, though not really a part. Lots of compliments.

I used to feel this way too, but!

Then I started using forming cream right out of the shower. Just towel dry. It will eventually just have that look, provided your hair is short(er).

Yeah I did this a couple days ago after going to a barber and telling him I was going to do this.

I'm a god now.

How did the Barber visit go? Do you recommend it over a salon?

My barber was super cool and we just talked about mpg and those newfangled cars. Obviously your mileage will vary hugely with that, but my guy was neat. He did know exactly what I wanted, and figured I had no clue about hair. I feel to get the same cut at supercuts I would have spent 20 minutes bumbling around terms I have no clue what they are and she still wouldn't know what I wanted.

So yeah I'll probably be going back to a barber when I need to again.

That's my haircut too! Though I push my bangs to one side mostly. I also flat-iron the tips for a bit more volume when my hair gets too long (otherwise my bangs will just hang in front of my face and blind me, etc.)

This stuff is amazing. It'll style your hair almost anyway you want and it'll look and feel like you have nothing in your hair. I use it for volume to my haircut, but I don't use it often because my recent haircuts have been cut really well and I haven't felt the need for it.

You need to pay more, you need to go to the same person (not just the same place), you need to have an idea of what you want, and you need a little patience.

I cut my own hair. I keep the sides and back cut short and top left longer (except the back is cut a bit shorter than the front on top).

I need to find me a good barbershop, preferably one where the barber massages your head (I wish). I always end up going to the salon and I'm rarely satisfied. Swear those women have no idea how to give a good buzz cut. I can't really do anything else with my hair so that's all I go for. Lately I had one of my buddies cut my hair, free and much better job than any salon lady could do. Still kinda want that barbershop experience though.

if you have more than 2 inches of hair from your scalp, go to a salon. barbers wont be able to do anything for you unless it involves an electric shaver

QFE

very true. "barbers" are good for skin cuts like shape up tape up and fades, but for longer hair, color, etc you want a stylist

I've been looking for a new hairstyle for a while as well. Grew my hair out long (Down to my shoulders) and it looked horrible. Shaved that shit off after looking like an idiot for a few months, but I just went with my usual buzz cut.

I actually kind of like the Ryan Gosling style posted earlier. I don't know if you have to look a certain way to pull it off, but I may give it a shot. Guess it couldn't hurt to put on a few pounds and fill out first.

This is how my hair looks when I get it cut. Right now it is long enough to look, as some chick told me a few days ago, "Don Draperish." I'm still not sure if she was complimenting me or saying my hair looks like an asshole.

I love this look, but at half that length.

It works for me. (I am referring to the second image)

It helps that I am more interested in how I think it looks rather than society, though.
I could see it being criticized if I was in high school, but that is about it.

I'm rocking this, very short on the sides, grown out on top, slick it back a bit:

I'm also loving that Ryan Gosling haircut... A lot of maintenance though, would take a while each morning to get it like that.

Very cool style, gonna try that next time I get my hair cut.

Lately my hair does this on its own:

Im in the process of growing a head of hair like this but atm i just slick it back. I got it cut at a salon for the first time (I shaved my head for a good 20 years) Im definitely never going anywhere else for a haircut. He did the back perfectly.

From the shaving thread. Its longer than it looks.

lol no. My current stylist has been the best person who has ever cut my hair. I've been to many barbers, and they've been mediocre.

This is how I have my hair and facial hair lately. Same length and style for facial and same for hair, tight and slicked.

edit. Not me obviously

Does anyone have any suggestions for good hair gels that style and hold your hair while at the same time feel like you have nothing in your hair if you run your fingers through it?

I just buzz my head as short as possible. 100 times easier than anything else and I only have to do it once every other week, and it only takes a few minutes.

I couldn't imagine being one of those people who have to get up and worry about something like hair.

Yeah, those 15 seconds are a real nuisance indeed.

Shave your head, son. You'll always look good and won't have to worry about what to do with your hair in the morning. If you've got the head for it, it's a no-brainer.

Not much I can do with my hair... I usually go bald, but that's been boring doing it for 20+ years. Been growing an afro lately, but more-so to see what I can do with it after I have more hair... no good ideas though...

Next time I'm going to a fucking stylist and I'll tell her to do whatever she thinks should work for me.

This is what I've done for a while now. The girl who usually cuts my hair is pretty cool, and just makes it nice and short. She says it looks good, which is good enough for me I guess.

I go with short back and sides. And a 3 or 4 on the top of my head. Perfect to gel or just leave.

Men should only go to a Barber.

I notice most barbers get clipper crazy on the top. I'll ask for like a 4 guard on the sides with a little trim off the top, keep it kind of long.

Five minutes later he is buzzing the top off and giving me a military fade. I don't know why barbers love just giving me a military fade. My hair sucks anyway, super thin, unshapable, and balding lol.

I'm guessing you're Turkish and so your hair is a little different than what local barbers are used to cutting. Maybe find a barber from the middle-east?
