Half Life 2 is one of the greatest games ever made, we all know it's a fact. It's starting to look aged texture wise but still has such a great aesthetic appeal.

This thread is for collection of hi res packs and upgrades for HL2 to make it shine again. Please post links!

The games invariably lose something when fans 'upgrade' the textures as far as I'm concerned.
This game in particular. Every HL2 texture/model upgrade I've seen is hideous.

I still think the vanilla game looks good so maybe I'm just CRAZY

I would grab one of these if all the characters didn't look so damn bad when they are revisualised by the modders. Also that screenshots they have added noise to the maps or some kind of underlying texture. It doesn't look as I would have hoped. I need more convincing OP > more screenshots!

What the fuck did they do to my Barney

Get that piece of shit 'upgrade' out of my face. Please, someone with a good rig, give us some vanilla hl2 screenshots in full quality.

You can keep the original models.

That looks terrible. HL2 doesn't need graphics mods, anyway. The art is smartly designed to compliment the level of tech it was built on.

I'm not convinced by those screenshots. I've always considered HL2's visuals timeless because of the high attention to detail and the distinguished art direction.

Ugh, Fake Factory. His models all look like ugly imitations of supermodels (especially his creepy Alyx obsession) and like most fanmade texture packs for games he just creates high res textures with no consideration for stuff like how the colors and textures worked together in the original to create a pleasing image and artstyle.

EDIT:

Guys, those pics of Alyx makes me want to puke blood and shit piss.

I remember downloading the Cinematic Mod out of curiosity (HL2 with better textures? Sure!) and when I went to install it there was like some creepy "Alyx selector" application in there that had like 20 different versions of Alyx with huge boobs or looking like a totally different person, in various skimpy outfits or totally naked. I uninstalled that shit.

I tried the cinematic mod out a couple of months ago and made this video to show the differences.

Nice, thnx for saving me the trouble, it has some positives but not enough for me downloading the pack.
Good - shadows yay!
Bad - colour pallete has been broken alot more for some of the map areas.
Once again the texture guys seem to love adding noise to the models such as the boat in the video, it looks awful.

I hope the gun models are optional.

I think I will wait until they try and change the maps more from the original to add map complexity, well I am hoping for too much but I can dream :D

The 11GB download, or whatever it is, is a bit much for most people to just "try it," I think. Glad the video helped.

Its strange, for Dragon Age:Origins I couldn't stomach a playthrough without texture packs, the same goes for Oblivion. But with HL2 the texture packs always make things look out of place, it might be because the aesthetic of the game is so finely tuned and in graved everything else looks out of place.

professional game developers working full time > fans working part time

who knew? :\
The are a few games where the fans really did a better job than the pros. This just isn't one of them.

Sorry OP, vanilla Half-Life 2 has never looked that bad for me. The one you found doesn't even have AA and AF applied. :lol

This, on the nose. It's maybe worthwhile if there's been a huge respect for the original textures (the Stalker Complete mods for example), but Half-Life 2 for some reason is one game where some "fans" think they can do better but completely miss the point in the process.

I'm playing through HL2 for the first time ever and i find the vanilla textures the best compared to fan made stuff... (yes i'm very lttp)
Goddamn motion sickness man... :(

Half-Life 2 is one of those games that I know is technically 'ugly' compared to lots of modern games, but Valve's art in textures, tones, colours, shading, and general level construction still makes it look wonderful in my opinion. Every fan made high res pack just makes it look so much worse.

I feel the same really.

Fucking atrocious. Greater clarity/detail does not equal better textures. It's like all those horrible high resolution texture mods for Zelda OoT and RE4 PC.

The new FakeFactory modification is really nice if you get the package that doesn't modify the NPCs. The latest version has a Lite Edition that just modifies the levels. It doesn't add music, creepy Alyx models, or any of that crap.

That's because it is, Adriana Lima likeness.

Can't tell if you're joking. Just in case:
Visible cleavage fits neither her character (practical resistance soldier) nor the world design (oppressive, omnipresent regime).
