mmod is good,it reworks how a lot of things look. all of which is optional. howeverit does change the gameplay slightly. combine will jump, use cover and smg grenades more. I think the next version of the mod will make this optional but its really not atm.
graphically the only real other option is reshade. and perhaps some piecemeal diy random textures/models from gamebananna.
hl2:update on steam is a slight visual upgrade that can also be combined w mmod if u want

Half-Life 2: Update on Steam is a fantastic package, and based on your preferences may be exactly what you're looking for.
Check the mod i just linked and give it a go, i agree that mods like MMod or the cinematic mod significantly change elements of the original Half Life 2, but Half Life 2: Update is built to be purely a graphical update with no changes to the original art-style, and a bug fix patch. It really is the best way to play Half Life 2 in its vanilla form, but better.

I personally don't like any of the complete re-skins or revamps that try to hard.
Half Life 2: Update is IMO the best mod.
you can enable background infos and trivia recorded by some youtube channels, the graphics are enhanced where needed and the game runs a bit better using it too.
in short: it's true to the original, changes only small details like some details in the skyboxes and has some cool trivia.

Half Life 2 Update+Reshade
As for ambient occlusion, Nvidia AO is sometimes buggy and old versions of Reshade that use HBAO give bad performance. Also, the RT shaders are still in BETA.

They fiddled with a few things here and there(physics/graphics).The one I noticed right away was the vortigaunts, they look different.

I just finished replaying vanilla 4k with 8xSSAA. This is the cleaneest game ever. Finally on a 4k monitor I can see all the tiny wires and bridge supports from far away without any aliasing !
I've played update 2 years ago and it's good but I don't like it's change of some ambient colors. This time just vanilla but 4k ground truth image quality.
BTW - update don't have the valve blinking patch from last year. Only vanilla

This game's art direction is great and it hasn't aged that badly. It also got plenty of graphical updates by itself, it definitely doesn't look the same as it did in 2004. For instance, the flashlight casting shadows didn't exist in the original release.
This game doesn't need graphical mods IMO.

imgur did a number on my screenshots... but look how clean this looks at 4k! Not a single jagged edge. Love how clean hl2 looks
There's something about the art and the lighting in this game that means it's always stood the test of time very well.
Nobody needs to install that trash.
For anyone curious, CMod was infamous for having some sexual content in it, including the fact that creator had a fetish for Alyx at one point and was arguing people down about it.
Stuff that didn't need to be in it, but he chose to put it in.

You can say you dislike the oversexualized Alys Models, that's okay, but it's still one of the better looking overhauls for HL2 out there if you ignore the HD-Models.
You can call it whatever you want, but it's far away from being "trash" just because it has oversexualized Models. Just disable them, they won't hurt or touch you.
Why not just check out this comparison with HL2 vs HL2 Update vs CMod? He can decide for himself if he likes the more radical changes to things like level design etc.
There are different mods that suit different needs. Update and MMOD stay faithful while CM takes a more radical approach. It's far from being "trash" though.
