Half Life 3: Realistically when can we expect it?

I remember being so excited after Episode 2 and them going
to Antarctica.
. That was long ago.

I guess after a while I lost interest. I guess that's a blessing in disguise, I'm sure I'd be excited if they ever announce it.

The people who say "never" really stagger me. Why in the hell would Valve 1. ditch their most popular franchise and 2. leave the story half finished? it just makes zero sense.

They would never cancel the series without saying so. It just wouldn't happen.

Until Valve come out and publically say THERE WILL BE NO MORE HALF-LIFE EVER then and only then will I give up hope.

Because they said they were focusing on creating services, not products. Hard to think of ways to turn a single player narrative focused linear game into a service that can be played repeatedly over a long stretch of time and where additional content can be purchased.

Can't bring myself to give a shit any more. In retrospect I didn't really enjoy most of HL2 to begin with.

Don't say things you'll regret later.

I believe Half Life 3 will be revealed this year alongside Source 2.. and probably delayed until next year, but it will be at E3. It will probably be PC/Steambox exclusive to start with, then Orange Boxed 3 years later.

It's the start of a new platform cycle, so they have nothing to gain from selling it to the few millions who will have a PS4/XB3 in the next year, but keeping it SB exclusive will sell a lot of them to the people like me who have gaming rigs that... uhhh... well, they play Half Life 2 really well.

It would be smart for Valve to launch the Steambox platform alongside Source 2 and Half Life 3 at the same time... a couple of months before any other next gen platforms are out. Hell they probably delayed HL3 internally just so they could align it with SB and give the platform a good start.

Half Life 3 will never come out.

In any case, they still need to make and release Episode 3 first, because that story hasn't ended yet.

Considering how HL2 (and it's episodes) took forever, I believe they're going full on "don't even mention it until we're absolutely 100% positive it's coming out on XX date."

It's pretty poor form of value to leave a cliff hanger hanging for so long without any sort of resolution.

They got me all emotionally invested and then basically pulled the plug over eight fucking years ago.

It's wrong. You shouldn't do shit like that to people.

There was no cliffhangar for Episode 2.
Eli died and that's it

I'm actually kind of beyond caring at this point. Was one of my favorite franchises of all time, but it's been gone so long that it's kinda faded from memory.

I'll certainly grab it when it comes out. Just likely not day one. I would have considered that statement blaspheme two years ago, but out of sight, out of mind I guess.

Logically speaking, how can Valve make a Half Life 3 which will actually bring something new to the FPS genre? The linear, set piece filled gameplay which is the trademark of the series is now commonplace and done to death, and the innovations with physics that the Source engine introduced now exists in pretty much every engine. Basically a Half Life 3 could have made sense 3 years ago but nowadays thanks to the over-saturation of the FPS genre I think it'll be hard for Valve to make something that wouldn't be overshadowed by the stupid CODs and Bioshocks.

I expect it to not live up to its ridiculous expectations, but be a great game nonetheless.

I think we may it before or in 2016.

Anything they do will be a disappointment. It's been built up too much.

I disagree. The expectation that's been built up is related to the story. Which they can pull off.

They haven't shown us or told us or hinted at anything regarding gameplay so people do not have crazy expectations regarding that.

Ask someone what will they think the plot of HL3 will be and they'll tell you about the Borealis, revenge for Eli, Antarctica, meeting Moss again and so on and so on.

Ask them about the gameplay and they'll say like HL2? Maybe? Or something new? Dunno?

DNF was hyped to hell because they showed a gameplay video that looked SO much fun; even if DNF wasn't a disaster it HAD to match that video, something extremely hard to do. Valve hasn't done that and that's good.

There's a new next-gen launch in the next few months. They've been spending a lot of time on their engines / tools. They're a relatively small shop for developing an engine like that and a breakthrough-game at the same time, so it's not surprising that their development cycles take forever.

I guess they really don't care about generating a lot of excitement on a constant basis, it's more about making the right decisions for the company looking forward and shipping the game when it's ready. They're probably still in the middle of adjusting their engines to work on PS4 and Durango, etc.

As long as you see Half-Life as a byproduct of their engine development, the timeframe makes absolute sense.

HL3 is already done. The download link is hidden in the Curiosity cube, don't listen to Molyneux saying otherwise.

They are not attending E3 so maybe next year.

Not exactly: Valve isn't exhibiting, which just means there'll be no public booth and doesn't necessarily preclude Valve's attendance in an official capacity, or... dare I say it... an announcement.

Thank God I didn't log onto Steam that day. That would have crushed me.

That's just an image taken from a fake Steam website designed to fool folks on April Fools' Day. Valve itself never does anything for AFD.

Whenever it comes out, it'll be for Source 2. Half-Life 1 and 2 were huge leaps forward in technology or what you could do in FPS at the time of release, they're not gonna release Half-Life 3(which is what it is, not an episode) on the ancient ass Source engine, with loading times every five minutes.

When Source 2 rolls out, Half-Life 3 will be there. And considering Valve has yet to make a bad game, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

Next Gen systems around 2 years in we will see it then another 1 year wait for release so it will be out in 4/5 years from now.

This is one of those few games that nobody knows for sure. Even safe answers like "in a year or three" sound like they could be dead-wrong. Nobody knows shit.

I wouldn't expect it at all considering how Valve operates. You work at Valve, can pick any project you want, are you really going to pick a corridor shooter?

Probably not too long after Valve goes public or gets outright absorbed by some major publisher, ie having shareholders to placate. Neither of which is very likely.

HL is not the type of game today's valve has any interest in making, STEAM has made them the kings of the digital distribution mountain and they've changed business strategy away from traditional big releases to the F2P micro transaction model that's making them money hand over fist.

And let's be honest, Half Life pioneered a genre, HL2 and episodes refined said genre but by now it's been done to death. You can't make a compelling case for HL3 to exist as yet another linear cinematic shooter.

I feel pretty much the same way. After the cliff hanger ending from episode 2, they couldnt release episode 3 fast enough. Now years have passed, I dont really care much, but Im sure I will be excited when they release the game.
